Great Aztec Slot Review
A carved-stone wall swallowed by jungle, reliefs gone gold-brown with age, and a green glow bleeding from somewhere deep inside. Great Aztec gives its theme room to breathe, then builds its action on a small grid of locked discs, where the pattern you fill matters as much as the prizes you collect. Few Hold & Win games ask you to aim for a shape; this one does.
It’s an iSoftBet build, closer in spirit to Aztec Gold: Extra Gold Megaways and Aztec Gold Mines than to the studio’s Megaways work. The essentials: high volatility, a 5×3 grid and a 2,500x win ceiling.
Base Game Symbols and Pays
The reels sit inside that overgrown carved-stone frame, five reels and three rows deep, with vines hanging from the top corners and leaves spilling over the base. A Wild substitutes for every symbol except the Sun Disc Scatter. It’s also the richest symbol on the board, paying 25x the total bet for five of a kind, and it pays from two of a kind, which none of the other symbols do.
Below the Wild sit three premium symbols: the Aztec Mask, the Jaguar and the Green Snake. All values are multiples of the total bet:
- Wild – 0.5x for two, 5x for three, 10x for four, 25x for five
- Aztec Mask – 2.5x for three, 5x for four, 20x for five
- Jaguar – 2x for three, 4x for four, 10x for five
- Green Snake – 1.5x for three, 3x for four, 5x for five
Wins pay as multiples of the total stake rather than a line bet, so the figures above are what each combination actually returns. Even the best line – five Wilds – pays a quarter of what the Mega disc is worth, which tells you where the game keeps its money. Beyond the premiums, the game relies on its special symbols and modifiers to keep the base game moving, and there are several of those.
Mystery Symbols
Mystery symbols are active during ordinary play. When they land, each one reveals any paid symbol except the Sun Disc Scatter. That means a screen full of them can turn into a full grid of the same icon, including the Wild, the top payer on the board. It’s a simple mechanic, and it does the job it’s there for: making ordinary spins worth watching while you wait on scatters.
Aztec Gold Cash Respins
This is the feature the game is built around. Land four or more Sun Disc scatters in view and they lock in place for three Hold & Win respins. Every fresh sun disc that lands during those respins holds too, and the count resets back to three. A single lucky disc can keep a round alive for a very long time.
The twist is the grid itself. Complete a horizontal line of discs and all wins are multiplied by x5; complete a vertical line and the multiplier is x3. Any multipliers activated by the triggering scatters are applied before the first respin, so a strong trigger is already paying before the round proper begins.
A typical round therefore plays out on two levels at once. Each respin is a chance to add discs and reset the count; meanwhile, the pattern those discs form is quietly working towards a completed line. A round that fills the middle row collects five times everything on the grid.
The discs themselves carry prize values, and four of them sit on a fixed ladder, shown as multiples of the stake:
- Mini – 10x
- Minor – 25x
- Major – 50x
- Mega – 100x
A grid can also hold multiplier tiles alongside the ladder prizes. Watch out for the Mini, Minor, Major and Mega discs in particular. Landing the bigger tiers is how a round goes from steady to serious.
Aztec Magic, Booster and the 2nd Chance Modifier
Aztec Magic
Aztec Magic can fire on any spin, with no warning and no build-up. When it does, it reveals a big win built from Mystery symbols or goes straight into the Aztec Gold Respins. Either outcome lands into a single moment, which is the entire point: the base game’s other systems build slowly, and this one doesn’t.
Booster
Booster works alongside the main feature rather than on its own. If the Aztec Gold Respins trigger while the Booster modifier is also live, every scatter on the grid boosts to a higher value before the round starts. The two arrive together or not at all, which makes the combined trigger the one worth hoping for. A boosted set of discs entering a round where the respin count can keep resetting is where the biggest results come from.
2nd Chance Modifier
Three scatters would normally be a near miss. Here it can trigger the 2nd Chance Modifier: the reels carrying scatters lock, and every other reel respins once in an attempt to land the fourth. It doesn’t always convert, but it means a three-scatter spin still has a pulse.
Extra Gold and Bonus Buy
The Extra Gold option is a toggle that adds 0.25 to the stake in exchange for a better chance of triggering the feature. It sits under the Aztec Bet options and switches on or off before you spin. For a Hold & Win title where the respins carry nearly all the value, that’s a more meaningful switch than it looks on paper.
There’s also a Buy button for going straight into the feature, listed alongside Extra Gold. Whether the buy or the toggle is the better route to the respins depends on how much play you want around them. The buy skips the wait entirely, while Extra Gold keeps the base game in the picture.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.7/10
Playing Great Aztec is a lot of waiting in the jungle for one very busy round, and that round is the reason anyone picks it. The respins do something most Hold & Win grids don’t: they make the shape of your discs matter, so a filling board gets tense before it pays.
Its best trick is that layered payoff – line multipliers, ladder discs and Booster boosts all stacking in one round. Its worst is the ceiling: 2,500x is modest for high volatility, and plenty of rounds will top out at the Mega disc’s 100x.
It’s for Hold & Win fans who enjoy the build and want a little more going on inside the grid, not for anyone chasing five-figure ceilings. If that green glow deep in the stonework is what draws you in, there’s real gold here – just not a mountain of it.

Complete a horizontal line of sun discs during the respins and all wins are multiplied by x5. A vertical line multiplies all wins by x3. -
