Heart Gem 5

Heart Gem 5 Slot Review

The prettiest game on the shelf is also the simplest. Heart Gem 5 wraps a five-line fruit machine in mauve haze, drifting glowing hearts and rose-gold lattice work, and then refuses to add a single thing to it: no free spins, no pick’em, nothing to trigger. Under the romantic finish it’s closer to the machines you’d have found in a pub in 1995 than to anything Playnet’s contemporaries are shipping.

That’s a stranger choice than it looks, because the paytable behaves like a modern one. It runs on a 5×3 grid with 5 paylines and returns 96.447% over the long run, with a top line pay of 600x the bet for five 7s. Old body, new teeth.

Base Game & Features

The reels carry a classic fruit-symbol set: lucky 7s at the top, then watermelons and grapes, a bell, and the lemons, plums and cherries grouped together on the bottom rung. Wins form left to right across five fixed lines, and only the best win on each line is paid.

Those five lines are worth a moment, because four of them aren’t straight:

• Lines 1, 2 and 3 – the three horizontal rows, top, middle and bottom
• Line 4 – a zig-zag running down and back up across the reels
• Line 5 – an X shape crossing the middle three reels

On a 5×3 grid that’s fifteen symbol positions, and only a fraction of them lie on a horizontal line. The zig-zag and the X pull the outer columns and the corners into play, so a symbol sitting in the top-left corner – dead space on lines 1 and 2 – still counts on the crossing lines.

The pays are printed against the total bet on screen, so read them as multiples of stake rather than raw figures:

• 7 – two of a kind pays 2x, three pays 10x, four pays 40x, five pays 600x
• Watermelon/Grapes – three pays 8x, four pays 20x, five pays 100x
• Bell – three pays 4x, four pays 10x, five pays 40x
• Lemon/Plum/Cherry – three pays 2x, four pays 6x, five pays 20x
• Gold Star – three pays 20x, wherever they land

That ladder is steep. The 7 is the only symbol that pays for two of a kind, and it’s the only one that pays more than 100x. Everything below the melon tier tops out at 40x, so the gap between a good spin and a great one is enormous.

The fruit grouping matters too. Lemons, plums and cherries all pay identically, which effectively gives you three symbols’ worth of chances at the bottom prize and keeps the low end ticking over while you wait for something bigger.

Look at the shape of the ladder another way. From the bottom rung to the 7, each step up multiplies the five-of-a-kind pay by roughly a factor of two to six, and the final jump from melons to 7s is sixfold again. There’s no gentle middle; a spin either lands fruit or it lands something worth stopping for.

The Heart Gem is the game’s wild, and it expands to cover its reel whenever it lands on the second, third or fourth reel, standing in for any of the fruit symbols on a payline.

That’s the base game in full. No tumbling, no random modifiers, nothing landing between spins; the purple haze sits there while the expanding wild and the stars do all the work.

Heart Gem 5 Bonus Features

Beyond the wild, Heart Gem 5 has exactly two special symbols, and both are stars. Neither triggers a bonus round, because there isn’t one; they pay directly, in the base game, on every spin. What each one does:

• Gold Star – lands on reels 1, 3 and 5 only, pays on any position on those reels
• Blue Star – a scatter that pays on any position on the grid
• Heart Gem – the expanding wild, on reels 2, 3 and 4

Gold Star Pays

The gold star lands on the first, third and fifth reels only, and it pays on any position on those reels. It doesn’t need a payline. Three of them anywhere across those reels pays 20x, half of what five bells pay, and they combine with nothing else.

Note the price of that freedom. The gold star appears on three of the five reels rather than all of them, so its 20x prize buys fewer landing positions than a full-grid symbol would have. Where it can appear, though, the corner and edge rows are as good as the centre – position on the reel doesn’t matter to it at all.

Blue Star Scatters

The blue star is a scatter, and it also pays on any position on the grid. Three of them pay 3x, well under the gold star, but five pay 100x, the biggest star pay in the game. Either way, these are wins that don’t care where the paylines run. On a five-line game, that’s a meaningful concession – most of the grid is dead space for ordinary symbols.

The Expanding Heart Gem Wild

The Heart Gem rounds out the set, and it’s the one special with a mechanical twist. It only appears on reels 2, 3 and 4, and when it does, it stretches to fill that entire reel before wins are counted. Because all five paylines pass through the middle three reels, a single expanded gem is in play on every line at once.

It substitutes for the fruit symbols only – the 7s, melons, grapes, bell and the bottom-tier trio. The stars stand apart and pay their own way. Where the gem helps most is the two-of-a-kind 7 pay: a pair of 7s on the outer reels with a gem in between is a completed three-7 line, worth 10x where the two alone were worth nothing.

Together, the three specials make a compact feature set. Nothing to trigger, nothing to collect, just symbols that pay where they fall and a wild that grows.

The best single line is five 7s at 600x the bet, with the star pays stacking on top where they land, and the rules cap any win at a maximum multiplier of 1,222x the bet. That’s the whole mountain.

Our Honest Verdict

Overall Rating: 6.8/10

Playing Heart Gem 5 is a lot of watching fruit land while waiting for a 7, and the reason to choose it is exactly that simplicity: you understand the whole game in a minute, the spins fly by, and the soft purple glow makes the waiting pleasant. It’s a game you can genuinely switch off with.

Its strength is the paytable’s nerve. The 7 pays 600x and nothing else pays more than 100x, so every single spin carries a live chance of something huge on a game with only five lines – that takes real conviction in the design, and it makes each spin matter more than the calm visuals suggest.

Its weakness is that the reverse is also true. With no free spins and nothing to collect, the long middle stretch of a session is fruit wins and expanding gems and not much else, and no amount of romantic lacquer changes that. This one’s for players who love a classic line-payer with a top prize worth dreaming about, not for anyone who needs a bonus round to feel the game moving. The hearts on screen aren’t decorative – they’re the whole personality.
