Kingfisher of the Sands Slot Review
An Egyptian sunset, still water reflecting a palm grove, and five pastel eggs perched along the top of the golden reel frame: Kingfisher of the Sands spends its scenery on the edges and keeps the real game overhead. That’s the arguable part. Most of what this slot has to offer sits above the reels, not on them, and the paytable underneath doesn’t come close to carrying the weight.
It’s a Wishbone build in the studio’s growing kingfisher family, sitting alongside Fortune Kingfisher, Kingfisher Boo! and Kingfisher On Wheels. The specs read as follows: 96.24% RTP, medium volatility, a 5×4 grid with 20 fixed paylines, stakes from 0.20 to 40.00 per spin, and wins capped at 6,000x your bet.
Base Game & Features
The reels sit in a golden sandstone frame, painted in a warm, glossy cartoon style with birds circling a haloed sun. It’s a 5×4 layout with 20 fixed paylines, and wins pay left to right from the first reel.
Only the highest combination counts per payline, even if several land on the same line. Bonus wins and payline wins can be awarded on the same spin, and the total payout is the sum of all payline wins.
Wilds substitute for everything except scatters and special symbols, and they can form their own winning combinations too. They land stacked, which is where the bigger base game wins come from.
The paytable is a thin one. Here’s what each symbol pays, with the three-, four- and five-of-a-kind multiples alongside:
- Green Snake/Lizard – 0.5x, 1x, 5x for three, four, five
- Cobra – 0.4x, 0.8x, 4x
- Pharaoh/Warrior – 0.3x, 0.6x, 3x
- Green Scarab – 0.2x, 0.4x, 2x
- A, K, Q, J, 10 – 0.1x, 0.2x, 1x
Those numbers tell you the base game isn’t where the money lives. Even a full line of the top symbol pays 5x, and the royals trickle in below that. The eggs above the reels are what you’re spinning for.
Kingfisher of the Sands Bonus Spins
The Kingfisher symbol is the scatter, and it can land on any reel. Each reel has an egg sitting above it. When a Kingfisher lands, it pecks the egg above that reel and may crack it open.
Crack one or more eggs in a single spin, excluding the Golden Egg, and you’re awarded 10 bonus spins with the enhancement of every cracked egg added. All bets played in the feature match the spin that triggered it.
The Four Egg Enhancements
- Reel 1 – Multiplier: starts at x2 and climbs by one for every special X symbol, to a maximum of x5. It multiplies the value of every Fish symbol collected.
- Reel 2 – Adder: starts at 1x and adds 1x the stake for every special + symbol, up to 5x the stake, added to every Fish during a collection.
- Reel 4 – Spreader: starts at 1 and climbs by one for every special 3 fish symbol, up to 5. It adds extra Fish to positions adjacent to any Fish in view, and if a new Fish lands on an occupied position, its value is added to the one already there.
- Reel 5 – Respin: hearts build up chances. When a Kingfisher lands, it and all Fish stick while the remaining positions respin. Every new Fish sticks; every spin without one burns a chance. It ends when the chances run out or the grid fills.
More than one egg can crack on the same spin, and the enhancements combine. A round entered with Multiplier and Spreader together plays very differently to one entered with the Adder alone.
The Spreader has its own order of operations: line wins pay first, then any Fish added to adjacent positions are collected by the Kingfisher. During the Respin, there are no paylines active at all.
Once the respin session ends, the number of chances resets to where it started. So a strong hearts haul keeps paying for itself across multiple collections.
The Golden Egg
The Golden Egg on reel 3 is the premium trigger. It puts all four enhancements to work at once and offers a shot at boosting their values further before the spins begin.
The catch: a Golden Egg round has no trail and no retriggers, so what you start with is what you get. Everything arrives up front, and nothing comes later.
Fish, Collections and the Trail
During bonus spins, Fish symbols carrying values between 0.20x and 1,000x your bet are added to the reels. Whenever a Kingfisher is present, it collects every Fish value in view, except during the Spreader and Respin features, where collection happens after those finish their work.
There’s a trail that advances one position for every Kingfisher that lands, moving left to right. Every fourth position triggers a retrigger of 10 additional spins, up to a maximum of three, and each retrigger cracks a random inactive egg so its enhancement joins the round.
Once an egg is active, it can’t be triggered again in that feature. A retrigger only takes effect once the current bonus spins have finished, so the extra spins queue up behind the ones you’re playing.
When the feature ends, winnings are collected automatically and the eggs reset. Any egg that wasn’t activated keeps whatever cracked status it had before the round began.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.6/10
Playing this one means long stretches watching the desert roll by, waiting for a bird. Stacked wilds keep the odd line coming, but the paytable below the frame won’t build anything on its own – the reason to sit down at this Nile is the eggs overhead, and they take patience to reach.
The strength is that no two bonus rounds feel the same. Which eggs crack on entry decides the entire character of a round, and the trail can bend it further halfway through, so a feature you’ve played twenty times can still surprise you. The weakness is everything around it: a flat symbol ladder and a 6,000x cap mean the base game is scenery between features rather than a paying game in its own right.
It suits players who like a collect-and-build round with medium-volatility pacing, where the fun is in which combination arrives rather than how big the ceiling is. Ceiling-chasers will find the cap cramped. For the patient ones, though, this desert keeps its rewards well hidden, and they’re worth digging for.
