Lucky 8 Merge Up Slot Review
A flat royal-blue field with no horizon, no scenery, just a dark navy frame around six rows of glossy digits: this is a slot that has stripped away everything except its own arithmetic. Lucky 8 Merge Up is at its best when the board takes over, because there’s nothing here to look at and a great deal to calculate.
It’s a BGaming take on the Merge Up format, running on a 6×6 grid with cluster pays, 97.25% RTP and high volatility. We’ve covered this family before, in Khonsu Merge Up and Sugar Merge Up, both in 2026; where those dressed the ladder in Egyptian night and candy meadow, this one deals in bare digits climbing towards that single purple eight. Bonanza Billion MergeUp and Sugar MergeUp cover similar ground elsewhere in the studio’s range.
Clusters and the Merge Up Ladder
Wins are clusters: 4 or more identical symbols adjacent vertically or horizontally. Diagonal neighbours don’t count unless they also share an edge. There’s no wild symbol in the game, and none is needed, because the merge mechanic is what moves a board forward.
When a cluster lands, it pays, some of its symbols vanish, and the survivors upgrade to the next level up. There are nine levels in total, running from 0 to the scatter-forming 8. The payout depends on both the level merged and the size of the cluster.
The bigger the group, the more new symbols it leaves behind:
- Cluster of 4 or 5 symbols – forms 2 new symbols
- Cluster of 6 or 7 symbols – forms 3 new symbols
- Cluster of 8 or 9 symbols – forms 4 new symbols
- Cluster of 10 or 11 symbols – forms 5 new symbols
- Cluster of 12 or more symbols – forms 6 new symbols
So a large cluster doesn’t just pay more once. It seeds the board with more upgraded symbols, which can form new clusters, which upgrade again. Every merge is a bet that the next chain is already on the board.
Symbol Payouts
All pays are multiples of the total bet, and the ladder is long: nine tiers from 0 up to 7, with the top symbol paying 50x for a cluster of 12 or more.
- 7 – 1x for 4, up to 50x for 12 or more
- 6 – 0.8x for 4, up to 40x for 12 or more
- 5 – 0.6x for 4, up to 30x for 12 or more
- 4 – 0.5x for 4, up to 25x for 12 or more
- 3 – 0.4x for 4, up to 20x for 12 or more
- 2 – 0.3x for 4, up to 15x for 12 or more
- 1 – 0.2x for 4, up to 10x for 12 or more
- 0 – 0.1x for 4, up to 5x for 12 or more
Note the shape of that ladder. A four-of-a-kind at the bottom pays a tenth of the stake, and even the top symbol only returns the bet for the minimum cluster. The money is in the climbing, not the landing.
The Scatter
The scatter is the purple 8, the ninth and highest level. It can land in any position, and 4 or more of them trigger the free spins round. There’s a second route to it as well: a winning cluster made entirely of 8th-level symbols pays out and then collapses into a single scatter. The top of the ladder feeds the bonus trigger directly.
Free Spins and Marked Cells
4 scatters award 15 free spins, 5 award 18, and 6 or more award 20. The round runs on the same merge mechanics as the base game, with one addition that changes everything: marked cells.
Every cell where a winning cluster formed gets marked, and stays marked until the round ends. If a marked cell takes part in another win, it picks up an x2 multiplier. Each further win it joins doubles that multiplier again, to a ceiling of x128 in a single cell.
A newly earned multiplier applies to the next winning combination the cell participates in, not the one that earned it. That timing detail matters more than it first appears: a cell that has just doubled doesn’t boost the win that doubled it. The payoff arrives one chain later.
Boards that keep merging feed their own hot spots, and a cell that climbs to x128 is worth more than most base game sessions. The round retriggers, too, when 4 or more scatters land in a single spin:
- 4 scatters – 5 additional free spins
- 5 scatters – 8 additional free spins
- 6 or more scatters – 10 additional free spins
Bonus Buy and Chance x2
Two buttons sit alongside the reels. The first, BUY BONUS, costs 100x the total bet.
The second, CHANCE x2, costs an extra quarter of the bet on top of the stake. The name points at doubled odds of triggering the feature, and that’s the sensible reading, but the effect isn’t spelled out beyond the label. Treat it as a priced ambiguity.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
This is a game you sit and watch rather than one you ride. The blue board does nothing for a while, then one cluster sets off the next and the digits climb, and that slow build is the whole reason to be here. The theme is a number and a colour, and the merging gives it more character than either deserves.
The bonus round is the best thing in it. Cells that double their multiplier with every win they join, up to x128, reward a board that keeps its chains alive, and the payoff landing one win later than you expect gives the round a real arc. The weakness is just as plain: the base paytable is almost decorative, with minimum clusters paying fractions of the stake, and high volatility stretches the gaps between anything that matters.
It’s a good fit for players who like watching a board develop and can carry a long quiet stretch to get there. Anyone who wants regular wins to keep a session moving will find the blue very blue indeed.
