Mahjong Wins Slot Review
Faint dragons coil across a peach temple backdrop, gold coins with square holes sit in the base of a red pillar, and a green carved border frames the screen like a jade ring. Mahjong Wins hides its sharpest decision inside all that ornament: the paytable is close to irrelevant, and nearly everything you win comes from how long a chain runs rather than what it’s made of. Pragmatic Play built a game where the tiles matter less than the falling.
It runs on a 5×4 grid with up to 1,024 ways to win, a 96.48% RTP, high volatility and a 5,000x bet cap on the total win, with bets from 0.20 to 240 per spin. A follow-up, Mahjong Wins Super Scatter, took the same clattering reels somewhere stranger; this is the original engine at full volume.
The Tiles and the Paytable
Every paying symbol is a mahjong tile, from the red 中 character down to the bamboo suits, and each pays as a multiple of the total bet for three, four or five of a kind on adjacent reels from the left. Only the highest win per way is paid, and wins on multiple ways are added together.
- 中 (red character) – 0.75x for three, 3x for four, 5x for five
- 發 (green character) – 0.5x for three, 2x for four, 4x for five
- Blue tile – 0.4x for three, 1x for four, 3x for five
- 八萬 – 0.3x for three, 0.75x for four, 2x for five
- Circle tiles (green and alternate dots) – 0.2x for three, 0.5x for four, 1x for five
- Bamboo tiles (red and green) – 0.1x for three, 0.25x for four, 0.5x for five
The values are multiples of the total bet, not a line bet, which matters on a ways game: five of the top tile returns 5x your stake, and the bottom of the table pays half a percent of it for three. Wins land left to right on adjacent reels. The maximum number of possible ways is 1,024, worked out across the five reels and four rows.
A gold ingot wild substitutes for everything except the scatter and appears only on reels two, three and four. The scatter is the gold 發 character, it can land on any reel, and three or more of them trigger the free spins.
Tumble Feature and Multipliers
After every spin, winning combinations are paid and the winning tiles vanish. Everything left falls to the bottom of the screen and new tiles drop in from above. Tumbling continues for as long as each new drop produces another win, and the lot is added to your balance once a chain finally stops.
Chains are where the money is, because a win multiplier applies to all wins for the current tumble, stepping up as the sequence runs. The ladder works like this:
- First win of a spin – 1x, no multiplier
- Second tumble – 2x
- Third tumble – 3x
- Fourth tumble onwards – 5x, where it holds for the rest of the chain
When the chain ends, the multiplier resets to nothing and the next spin starts from scratch. The ladder is short and flat-topped, so the difference between a two-tumble spin and a five-tumble spin is the difference between a 2x win and a 5x one.
Gold Symbols
At random on any spin, normal paying tiles marked in gold can appear anywhere on reels two, three and four. They pay exactly what their ordinary versions pay. The difference comes on the next drop: when a winning combination includes a gold tile, that tile transforms into a wild for the following tumble.
It’s a small hook with outsized consequences. A gold tile inside a chain becomes a wild mid-sequence, which makes further wins more likely, which extends the chain, which pushes the multiplier ladder higher.
Gold landing early is what separates a paying spin from a dead one. And because gold only shows on the middle three reels, the wilds it creates all sit where they can connect the left side of the grid to the right.
Free Spins
Three or more scatters award 12 free spins, with special reels in play for the round. Every win starts at a 2x multiplier, and the ladder from there is steeper than the base game’s:
- First win – 2x
- Second tumble – 4x
- Third tumble – 6x
- Fourth tumble onwards – 10x, held for all subsequent tumbles
The multiplier resets to 2x at the end of each chain rather than to nothing, so every winning sequence in the round is at least doubled. Three or more scatters during the round retrigger it for 12 more spins, with no stated limit on how many times that can happen.
The 5,000x bet ceiling applies to both the base game and free spins. If a round’s total reaches it, the round ends immediately, the win is paid and any remaining spins are forfeited. Free spins wins are awarded after the round completes, and the round’s history entry carries the whole win of the cycle.
Playing It
The bet menu opens from the plus and minus buttons, with denominations to pick from and a running display of credit and bet that switches between coins and cash view. Autoplay runs until you stop it, and spin speed cycles between normal, quick and turbo. On desktop, space and enter start and stop the spin.
Bets run from 0.20 up to 240 per spin, a wider top end than most tumble games offer, and the stake covers all 1,024 ways rather than a per-line charge. There’s no bonus buy in this one; the scatter route is the only way into the round.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
Mahjong Wins is a waiting game in festive dress, and the one reason to choose it is the chain: gold tiles turning wild mid-tumble, the multiplier climbing, and a single spin quietly becoming five. When that engine runs, it’s more fun than a paytable this thin has any right to be.
The strength is the free spins round’s floor. Every win in it is at least doubled, the ladder reaches 10x, and retriggers can turn one trigger into a long stay. The weakness is everything between chains: the tiles pay so little that a spin with no gold on the middle reels is usually just noise.
This is a slot for players who like a long build and trust the tumble engine to pay it off, not for anyone who wants the paytable itself to do the work. The dragons on the backdrop have the right posture; they’ve been coiled and waiting for centuries.
