Mr Magic Slot Review
A curtain parts in violet smoke and gold trim, and the trick on the other side is a strange one: the fewer symbols this game shows you, the better it plays. Mr Magic hides its real game inside two bonus rounds that strip the reels down to the paying half of the table, and the base game is mostly the warm-up act. Amatic have dressed it all in magic-show theatre, but the substance is that stripping, not the stage dust.
It runs on a 5×3 grid with 50 paylines, and its RTP of 97.1% is comfortably above the norm, which is the number that’ll catch most eyes first. Fans of the studio’s joker games will recognise the shape of it; Fortune Joker 10 and Fortune Joker 20 share the same classic-fruit-with-a-twist approach. Whether the magic here is more than smoke is what follows.
The Stage and Its Symbols
Wins pay leftmost to right on adjacent reels, across 50 fixed lines. The wild substitutes for everything except the BONUS symbol, and it’s a rich one: the wild’s own line pays sit at the top of the table, above every regular symbol.
The paying cast, top to bottom, with values for three, four and five of a kind:
- Wild – 50, 250, 2500
- Bonus scatter – 100, 250, 5000, paid on any position
- Lady – 15, 50, 200
- Rabbit – 15, 50, 125
- Dove and Cards – 10, 25, 100
- A and K – 5, 20, 50
- Q and J – 5, 10, 25
Notice the gap between the two ends of that table. Five wilds pay 2500 while five Qs or Js pay 25: a hundredfold difference between the best and worst line in the game. The premium symbols also step up sharply at the top end, with the Lady’s five-of-a-kind doubling the Rabbit’s.
The cast is grouped into shared tiers rather than standing alone. The Dove and the Cards pay identically at every count, and the royals pair off the same way, with A and K forming one tier and Q and J a cheaper one below it. Only the top three characters have pays of their own, which tells you where the game’s personality sits.
One symbol is worth a closer look. The CURTAIN doesn’t pay anything itself; it turns randomly into one of the other symbols, which makes it a live wildcard on every spin it lands on. In the bonus rounds it gets stricter about what it can become, and that’s where it does its best work.
The scatter BONUS symbol pays on any position and is the trigger for the main round. Between the transforming curtain, the stacked 3 SPINS symbol and the two scatters, the base game carries more moving parts than the classic look suggests.
How the game’s two rounds are won, and what each one changes:
- Bonusspins – triggered by 3, 4 or 5 BONUS scatters anywhere
- Bonusspins award – 10, 15 or 20 spins depending on the trigger
- Powerspins – five spins, won randomly in the main game
- Powerspins retrigger – 3 extra spins for a full-stacked 3 SPINS symbol on reel three
- Retrigger in bonus – additional bonusspins can be won during the round
Bonusspins
Landing three, four or five BONUS scatters starts the main round with 10, 15 or 20 bonusspins respectively. Five scatters for the top tier is a big ask, but the scatter pays soften the wait: even the three-symbol trigger pays 100 before the round begins.
The clever part is the symbol pool. During the BONUS round, only the WILD, RABBIT, CARDS, DOVE, LADY, BONUS and CURTAIN symbols appear. The low royals are gone entirely, so every spin of the round is built from the upper half of the paytable.
The curtain keeps transforming, now into any of those bonus symbols. With the weak symbols stripped out, each transformation has a real chance of completing a premium line. Additional bonusspins can be won during the round, and play continues until the count runs dry.
Because the BONUS symbol stays in the pool, the trigger combination can form again mid-round. Each retrigger adds to the remaining count rather than restarting anything, so a round that keeps hitting scatters can run for a long while on the premium-only reels.
The round follows a simple sequence from start to finish. Scatters land, the round opens with the count for the trigger, spins play out on the stripped reel set, and any fresh scatter clusters along the way extend the count. Nothing else changes: bet size, line structure and the left-to-right payout all carry over untouched from the main game.
Powerspins
The second round can’t be aimed for. Five powerspins can be won at any time, randomly, in the main game – there’s no symbol combination to chase, which makes it a genuine surprise when it arrives.
The pool is narrower still: only the LADY, WILD, RABBIT, CURTAIN and 3 SPINS symbols are available during powerspins. That’s the top three payers plus the wild and the curtain, and nothing else. Every spin of the round is a shot at premium combinations only.
The curtain’s transformations tighten to match: during powerspins it only turns into the LADY, WILD or RABBIT. Retriggers work differently here. If the 3 SPINS symbol lands full stacked on the third reel, three additional powerspins are added, and the round runs until the count is spent.
The full stack matters. A single 3 SPINS symbol drifting past on the middle reel does nothing; all three rows need it at once, and only then do the extra spins land. It’s the one part of either round that behaves like a conventional reel event rather than a random gift.
Compare the two pools and the difference shows what each round is for. Bonusspins keeps the DOVE, CARDS and BONUS symbols and runs longer; powerspins cuts everything except the very top of the table and bets everything on a short, sharp burst.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.7/10
Playing Mr Magic is mostly waiting for the curtain to do something. The base game is steady, high-return spinning with the odd transforming symbol, and the reason anybody sits down at it is that when the rounds finally arrive, the reels quietly lose their worst symbols and everything on screen starts paying properly. It’s a patient game dressed as a showy one.
Its strength is the bonusspins round: a trigger you can work towards, up to 20 spins to start with, and retriggers that stack on top. Its weakness is everything before that – the regular pays run thin, and powerspins can flash past in five spins of nothing much.
It suits players who like a classic 5×3 shape and don’t mind a long build for the good part; anyone chasing constant action will find the warm-up slow going. But the return is generous, the trick is real, and when the curtain finally opens the stage is worth the wait.
