Napoleon Megaways

Napoleon Megaways Slot Review

Blueprint Gaming released Napoleon Megaways on October 24, 2024, positioning it as a sequel to the original Napoleon: Rise of an Empire with added Megaways mechanics from Big Time Gaming. The game attempts to bridge series enthusiasts and Megaways players, combining a well-executed conquest of Europe theme with the developer’s characteristic bright, accessible design. Whilst the Napoleon brand carries historical weight, the Megaways adaptation seeks to revitalise a trusted favourite though reviewers are divided on whether the conversion succeeds.

Base Game & Features

Napoleon Megaways operates on a 6-reel grid with variable rows ranging from 2 to 5 symbols per reel, creating up to 15,625 ways to win on each spin. This fluctuating payline structure is the defining characteristic of Big Time Gaming’s Megaways mechanic–the number of ways changes dynamically with every rotation. Betting ranges from £0.10 to £10 per spin, making it accessible across player bankrolls. The RTP stands at 95.49% (with a lower 92% variant available), and reviewers recommend sticking with the primary version.

The Napoleon Wild Mechanic

The Napoleon Wild symbol appears exclusively on reels 2, 3, 4, and 5. When it lands, the wild expands to cover all positions on that reel and applies a multiplier equal to the number of positions it covers. This multiplier-based approach differs from the original game’s Attack feature, and whilst it creates impressive payout combinations–particularly when multiple wilds land in a single spin–some players perceive it as a mechanical downgrade. The distinction matters: multiple Napoleon Wilds can stack their multipliers, potentially generating significant wins. However, the wild’s dual role during free spins (triggering both symbol upgrades and extra spins) makes the feature more complex to achieve than in the base game.

Bonus Features & Free Spins

Landing 3 or more scatter symbols triggers Napoleon Megaways’ central bonus feature: 12 free spins plus a cash prize. The cash prize scales with scatter count–3 scatters award 2x bet, 4 scatters award 20x bet, 5 scatters award 50x bet, and 6 scatters unlock 100x bet. These cash prizes are awarded immediately on trigger.

During free spins, the game implements a progressive symbol upgrade sequence that unfolds with each Napoleon Wild that lands. The sequence progresses as: Drums → Pistols → Cannons → Horses → Ships → Soldiers. Each wild landing advances one step through this sequence, permanently upgrading that symbol tier for the remainder of the free spins round. This mechanic creates escalating win potential, though reviewers note that the upgrades feel somewhat underwhelming compared to what modern Megaways slots typically deliver in their bonus mechanics.

Extra wilds during free spins are equally generous, awarding 1 additional spin for a single extra wild, 3 extra spins for two wilds, 5 additional spins for three wilds, and 7 additional spins for four or more wilds. The free spins round is fully retriggerable–landing additional scatters continues to award another 12 spins plus fresh cash prizes, allowing sessions to extend significantly.

Our Honest Verdict

Rating: 6.4/10

Napoleon Megaways stands as a fascinating case study in sequel mechanics. The core specifications read impressively: 95.49% RTP, high volatility (5/5 rating), 50,000x maximum win potential, and a generous free spins mechanic. Yet the execution raises questions about whether the mechanical marriage succeeds. The multiplier wilds do generate exciting moments when multiple symbols land together, but the base game experiences the familiar high-volatility pattern of dead spins interspersed with minor wins–reviewers consistently note that both base game and bonus rounds feel like they’re “saving RTP” with numerous dead spins.

Mechanically, the Megaways conversion fundamentally altered the original game’s design. The 15,625 ways to win replace the original’s traditional payline structure, creating a different win distribution pattern. Some players embrace this change; high-volatility chasers appreciate the expanded win possibilities and 50,000x potential (£250,000 cash equivalent). However, many slot enthusiasts expected something more innovative–the symbol upgrade sequence, whilst present, feels incremental rather than transformative.

The broader context matters. Blueprint Gaming’s release timing coincided with market saturation of Megaways slots, and Napoleon Megaways failed to perform exceptionally in its debut week, trending outside the top 1,000 most-played games in most markets and ranking only around 600 in Britain during its first week. Review scores suggest players found it interesting if not essential–using Megaways as a commercial convenience rather than pursuing genuine innovation. The game ticks the “exciting” checkbox for high volatility fans seeking decent potential, but it’s not quite a statement-maker and falls short of the impact original series entries achieved.

Napoleon Megaways will more than suffice for fans of the franchise seeking a modern variant. However, many players will likely stick with the original Napoleon: Rise of an Empire, which now represents established familiarity. The sequel’s timing affected perception–nearly six years after the original’s release, converting the concept to Megaways feels less groundbreaking than it might have earlier. For bankroll-conscious players and high-volatility enthusiasts, the statistics prove superior to many alternatives, even if the mechanical execution feels mechanically derivative. The game is statistically sound but aesthetically restrained; it delivers volatility without surprise, and that predictability may ultimately be its defining characteristic.
