Open It! Slot Review
Snow at the window, stockings over the fireplace, a fir with a gold star on top: BGaming‘s Christmas living room wants you comfortable, and that’s not an accident. Open It! is the least dramatic gamble in the studio’s catalogue – one wrapped gift, one yes-or-no, repeated until you decide to stop – and the cosy room exists to make that feel like an evening by the fire rather than a coin flip on a desk.
There are no reels here and no paylines. Instead you pick from an endless row of wrapped gifts, each carrying a multiplier, and each pick either opens or doesn’t. It runs at a 97% RTP on low volatility, the highest return figure we’ve seen from BGaming’s catalogue alongside titles like Fruit Million and Chicken Rush 2. The appeal is simple: it shows you the odds before you commit a penny.
How Open It! Works
The rules fit in two sentences. Click a gift to open that specific one, or press Play and a random gift opens. If the gift opens, you win its multiplier; if it doesn’t open, you lose the round.
That’s the entire game. Set your total bet using the buttons in the bet field, pick a gift, and find out. There’s a festive dressing over the top of it, but the mechanic underneath is barebones gambling: a binary outcome, repeated as many times as you like.
A round plays out in four steps. Set the bet, choose your gift – or don’t, and let Play choose – watch the gift either unwrap or stay shut, and collect the multiplier if it opens. Nothing carries over between rounds. Every pick is a fresh coin flip with its own published odds.
The gifts come in colours, and colour is the only thing distinguishing one from another at a glance. Hovering over any of them brings up a tip with two pieces of information: the chance that gift currently has to open, and a running count of how many times you’ve clicked it.
That click count is quietly useful. It lets you track your own pattern across a session – how many goes you’ve given the x4 gift, say, before moving on. On a game this repetitive, that’s the only record of where your money has been.
Choosing a specific gift and pressing Play are the two ways into a round, and they suit different moods. Picking directly gives you control over which multiplier you’re chasing. Play hands the choice to the game, which is the closer equivalent of a spin on a conventional slot.
The Multiplier Ladder
Each of the eight multipliers has its own chance of the gift opening. The ladder steps like this:
- x1.1 – 88.18% chance to open
- x1.5 – 64.67% chance
- x2 – 48.50% chance
- x4 – 24.25% chance
- x8 – 12.13% chance
- x16 – 6.06% chance
- x32 – 3.03% chance
- x64 – 1.52% chance
The percentages are win chances per tier, not payouts, and they aren’t tied to any particular bet size. So a 2.00 stake on the x8 gift returns 16 times nothing if it stays shut, and 16.00 if it opens.
The shape of the ladder is the interesting part. The x1.1 tier opens nearly nine times in ten, which means small returns land constantly. The x64 top tier opens roughly once in every 66 attempts, so chasing it is a long project. You choose your own point on that curve, gift by gift.
Notice the gaps between tiers, too. From x2 to x4 the win chance halves, and it halves again at every step up to the top: 48.50, 24.25, 12.13, 6.06, 3.03, 1.52.
Each rung of the ladder costs you almost exactly half your opening probability in exchange for doubling the multiplier, which makes the expected value of the tiers remarkably even. The choice between them is about variance, not value.
The x64 multiplier is the ceiling of the ladder, and the ladder is the whole game – the biggest prize any gift can pay is 64 times your bet.
Autoplay and Fast Autoclick
Two conveniences sit on top of the picking. The first is fast autoclick: click and hold a gift and the game opens it repeatedly without you tapping each time. For a game built on rapid repeated rounds, it saves a lot of button work, and it pairs naturally with the low tiers, where the point is volume rather than any single outcome.
The second is a full autoplay mode. Open the settings and choose a number of rounds from the suggested options, or type a custom figure. Autoplay starts as soon as the count is set, displays the rounds remaining on its button, and stops when you click it again.
Stop Conditions
Autoplay can be set to stop itself on four conditions, each with its own threshold you write in:
- On any win – stops after a gift opens
- If single win exceeds – stops when one round pays more than your stated sum
- If cash balance increases by – stops when your balance rises by the stated amount
- If cash balance decreases by – stops when your balance falls by the stated amount
Those last two are the ones worth setting. Because a session here is dozens of quick rounds rather than a handful of spins, a balance threshold works as a session clock: decide what you’re willing to lose or happy to win, write it in, and autoplay ends itself when you get there.
Colour Filters
The Advanced menu restricts autoplay to specific gift colours – one, several, or all of them. Since colour is the only visible difference between gifts, this is effectively a way to tell autoplay which rungs of the ladder to work on while you’re away from the button.
One restriction applies: autoplay may be unavailable at some casinos because of licensing requirements on the operator’s side. If the button isn’t there, that’s why.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6.1/10
Playing Open It! is sitting by a warm fire and making the same small decision a few hundred times. There’s something restful about that, and it’s the one reason anybody would choose it over a five-reel game: you always know exactly what you’re risking and what it pays if it comes off.
Its strength is candour. The win chance on every gift is printed before you commit, the tiers differ in variance rather than value, and the 97% return backs the whole thing up. Its weakness is that it never becomes anything more. The x64 tier opens once in 66 attempts, the small tiers pay in fractions of your stake, and an hour in you’re doing precisely what you did in the first minute.
This is a game for players who like low-stakes repetition with the odds on the table and no surprises, particularly in the Christmas run-up. Anyone who plays slots for features, drama or a jackpot arc will find the fire goes out quickly here; those happy to just sit by it will be content.
