Pirates 2 – Mutiny Slot Review
A pirate ship lies broken in half in a tropical cove, its two splintered halves holding a parchment chart between them, a grinning crab perched on a barrel at the waterline. Pirates 2 – Mutiny plays out on that wreck, and the game has more sympathy for a losing spin than almost anything else in the cluster genre: a dead drop can summon a wave, a losing spin can get its low symbols blasted away, and multiple clusters merge into whatever pays best. Yggdrasil have built a slot that keeps rescuing spins, and that’s its whole character.
It runs on a 5×5 grid with six paylines, pays in clusters of six or more matching symbols, and carries a 96.2% RTP with low volatility, a 17.7% hit rate and a 4,900x ceiling. It sits in the same mechanism-heavy territory as Valley of the Gods 2 and Multifly, two earlier Yggdrasil builds that also refused to let a spin end quietly. Whether the salvage operation holds together is the real question.
Base Game & Features
Wins don’t arrive on lines here. Instead, six or more identical symbols landing adjacent to one another form a cluster, and that cluster is the win. Once a cluster lands, every instance of that symbol on the grid stays put, everything else vanishes, and the survivors drop down while new symbols fill the gaps. There’s no wild symbol in the game; the only special beyond the paying cast is the scatter, which appears in the base game alone and does nothing but trigger free spins.
The cast splits three ways: four pirate characters up top, four pieces of pirate equipment in the middle, and the four card suits at the bottom. Symbol values, quoted at the default 2.00 stake:
- Red-haired woman: 2.00 for a single symbol, 50.00 for 25
- Purple pirate: 1.50 / 37.50
- Green man: 1.20 / 30.00
- Blue-haired woman: 1.00 / 25.00
- Cannon: 0.80 / 20.00
- Purple sword: 0.70 / 17.50
- Green bottle: 0.60 / 15.00
- Blue hook: 0.50 / 12.50
- Heart, spade, clover and diamond: 0.20 / 5.00
Stakes run from 0.20 up to 100 per spin, and the bet is always 20 coins, with the coin value doing the work of sizing it. If a game round is interrupted mid-play, the round can be replayed after restarting, or skipped to have the win added straight to the balance.
Dropdown Wins
Land six or more adjacent symbols and a Dropdown begins. All non-winning symbols are removed, the winning symbols drop to the bottom, and new symbols fill the empty positions. If a second cluster of a different symbol appears during the drop, it’s treated as a losing symbol and cleared away with the rest.
If the new symbols create further clusters, the process repeats, chains continuing until no new winning symbols appear. Only then is the win paid, as one total at the end of the sequence rather than step by step. A single spin can therefore string together several clusters of different symbols, each drop adding to the count of winning symbols held on the grid.
Cluster Transform
When two or more winning clusters of different symbols land on the same spin, the lower-paying clusters are transformed into the highest-paying symbol on the grid, regardless of cluster size. A two-symbol cluster of the top pirate counts for exactly as much as a ten-symbol cluster of the swords, once the transform has done its work. If the clusters are all card suits, the hierarchy runs heart, spade, clover, diamond from highest to lowest.
Multiplier
Filling rows with winning symbols awards a multiplier, added to each Dropdown win separately. The ladder:
- One row filled: 1x (free spins only)
- Two rows filled: 2x
- Three rows filled: 3x
- Four rows filled: 5x
- Five rows filled: 25x
The multiplier resets at the end of each spin in the base game. In free spins, it doesn’t.
Mutiny Symbol
A mystery 3×3 symbol lands at random and always reveals high-paying pirate symbols. Covering a third of the grid, it guarantees a win or extends a Dropdown already in progress. It can’t reveal anything cheap; the low-paying suits and the equipment symbols aren’t in its repertoire.
Cannon Blast
On a losing spin, in the base game or in free spins, the Cannon Blast can fire and remove every low-paying symbol from the reels. New symbols drop into the gaps, giving the spin another chance to produce a cluster. With the four suits gone, whatever lands next can only be equipment or pirates.
Tsunami
The Tsunami arrives during a Dropdown, when at least six winning symbols are on the reels but the drop produces nothing new. The losing symbols are washed away, the winning symbols are levelled to push the potential multiplier higher, and another Dropdown follows. Between the Tsunami, the Cannon Blast and the transform, a spin has to be quite thoroughly dead before the game lets it go.
Pirates 2 – Mutiny Free Spins & Bonus Features
Free Spins
Landing three scatter symbols within a single game round, spread across multiple Dropdowns if need be, awards seven free spins. Each session picks one random pirate as the high-paying symbol, and every other high-paying symbol on the grid is replaced with the chosen one. That concentrates the top of the paytable into a single symbol for the whole round, so every high-symbol cluster pays at the same rate.
The multiplier behaves differently here. The session starts at 1x, and every multiplier achieved is summed and applied to each Dropdown win for the entire session, with the 1x single-row step available from the first row. In the base game the ladder resets every spin; in free spins it only climbs.
How a win is calculated matters here. When a Dropdown ends, the winning symbols are counted and multiplied by the symbol’s value, then by any active multiplier. Ten swords filling the bottom two rows would pay ten symbols at their value, doubled by the 2x row multiplier, for 140 coins. The coin win then converts to cash at the coin value in play.
The maximum win across all of this is 4,900x the stake.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.8/10
Playing this feels less like spinning and more like patching a hull: you’re mostly waiting for the game to rescue something, and it usually obliges. The reason to pick it up is that rescue act itself. No other cluster slot fights this hard for a losing spin, and the base game is better company than the numbers suggest.
The best thing here is free spins, where the multiplier only climbs and one pirate carries the whole top of the paytable, so a good round builds and keeps building. The worst thing is the paytable underneath: the four suits pay a fifth of the lowest pirate, which means half the symbols exist only to be cleared away.
It’s a slot for players who enjoy steady, busy sessions and long chains rather than a chase, and it’s honest about that. Anyone after a jackpot will find the ceiling low and the going calm. But the crew have kept this wreck sailing, and for the right passenger it’s a pleasant voyage.
