Potion of Madness Slot Review
A Victorian back street lit by a single gas lamp, brick closing in on both sides and a spired tower faint in the dusk: hand-drawn, inked, moody. Potion of Madness spends its money on this one narrow street rather than on a crowd of features, and I’d argue that’s the right call, because a slot with three features built from the same scatter doesn’t need more decoration. It’s a quieter game than its title promises, in the best sense.
Play’n GO has built it on a 5×3 grid with 10 paylines, running at 96.2% RTP with mid volatility and a 6,000x ceiling on the normal bet. Every feature runs off the scatter, and how many land decides which one you get. It sits in familiar company for the studio, alongside Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness, Alice Cooper and the Tome of Madness and Lab of Madness: It’s a Wild!.
Dr. J and the Base Game
Wins pay left to right on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost, and only the highest combination counts on each line. Ten lines on a 5×3 grid is a classic, compact setup, and the pays reflect it: this isn’t a game that hands out headline sums in the base game. The wild is Mr. H, who substitutes for every symbol except the scatter.
The symbol to watch is Dr. J, the super high payer, because he’s the raw material for every feature in the game. His values, and everyone else’s, as multiples of the total bet:
- Dr. J – 2.5x for three, 5x for four, 10x for five
- Green Potion Apparatus, Purple Device – 1.5x for three, 3x for four, 6x for five
- Pocket Clock, Newspaper – 1x for three, 2.5x for four, 4x for five
- A, K – 0.5x for three, 2x for four, 3.5x for five
- Q, J – 0.5x for three, 1.5x for four, 3x for five
- 10 – 0.5x for three, 1x for four, 2x for five
- Mr. H (Wild) – three of a kind pays 3x, four pays 6x, and a full line pays 30x
Note who tops that list. Five wilds pay 30x the bet, three times what five Dr. J symbols manage, which tells you where the game wants you looking: everything funnels towards turning Dr. J wild and stacking him up.
The mid-tier symbols split into neat pairs, with the potion apparatus and the purple device above the clock and newspaper, and the royals filling the bottom. When a single spin wins on multiple lines, everything adds together, and all of it is paid out at the end of the round.
Controls are standard for the studio’s table. Bets move one step at a time with the plus and minus buttons, Auto Play runs consecutive rounds at your current settings, and Fast Play speeds everything up considerably. Holding the spacebar for a second and a half switches on Hyper Spin, which makes the reels fly until a feature arrives and slows them back down.
There’s also an auto adjust bet setting, which drops your stake to the highest level your balance can still cover when funds run low. It only reduces, never climbs back, until the balance supports the original bet again. The bet can’t be changed mid-round.
The Scatter Ladder: Transformation and Re-Spins
It’s a three-step ladder, and even the bottom rung does something. Each tier builds on the last:
- One scatter – the Transformation feature: every Dr. J symbol on the reels turns into a wild
- Two scatters – Re-Spins: Dr. J symbols turn into sticky wilds, then the re-spins begin
- Three scatters – Free Spins: five spins on the expanded grid, with re-spins built in
Transformation
The single-scatter Transformation is the quiet one. Every Dr. J on screen becomes a wild for that spin, which on a ten-line grid can turn an ordinary result into several lines at once. It costs the game nothing extra and it keeps single scatters from feeling like dead landings.
Because the wild substitutes for everything except the scatter, a Dr. J conversion is a straight upgrade: whatever line he was sitting on is now a line through the game’s most flexible symbol. Where several Dr. J symbols land at once, each of them converts, and the spin pays out as normal before the reels move on.
Re-Spins
Two scatters take it further. All Dr. J symbols become sticky wilds, and only one wild can land per reel, though any wild already present has a chance to expand vertically. Each time a wild lands or expands, another re-spin follows.
The sequence only stops when no new wild lands, nothing expands, or the reels simply run out of room. Sticky wilds hold their positions until the re-spins end, so a good run builds a grid that pays on multiple lines at once.
What that means in practice is a chain with its own logic: a fresh wild anywhere restarts the count, an expansion restarts it too, and the ceiling is physical rather than numerical. Once every reel carries a full stack of wilds, there’s nowhere left for the sequence to go and it settles. The bet stays locked at whatever triggered the feature throughout.
Free Spins
Three scatters award five free spins, and the game changes shape around them: the grid expands to 5×6 and the paylines jump from 10 to 40. Every Dr. J symbol is automatically transformed into a wild on entry.
Inside the round, landing a wild triggers a re-spin exactly as two scatters would in the base game. Each free spin can host one re-spin session of its own, up to a maximum of five separate sessions across the feature.
That’s the whole engine: a taller grid, four times the lines, and a mechanic that keeps feeding wilds onto it while they still have room to grow. When the wilds stop landing, the round moves on. Wins from the feature are added to any payline wins from the triggering round, and the feature plays out at the same bet and line count as the spin that set it off.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.6/10
Playing Potion of Madness is like following that lamplit street deeper in: nothing much happens at first, and then the whole thing opens up. The one reason to choose it over flashier Play’n GO fare is that its scatter ladder means something happens on one scatter, on two, on three, so a session is a series of small steps rather than long waits punctuated by one big door.
The free spins round is the best thing here, because a 5×6 grid with 40 lines is exactly the right place for expanding sticky wilds to add up. The worst thing is that five spins is a stingy allowance for a round that’s clearly the point of the game; a dud bonus comes and goes before it’s had a chance to build anything.
It suits players who like watching a mechanic accumulate: mid volatility, frequent small interventions, one structural payoff when the wilds cooperate. It isn’t for anyone chasing brutal variance and four-figure base hits. For the patient, this little street is worth the walk.
