Primate King Megaways

Primate King Megaways Slot Review

Red Tiger’s track record for creating engaging, mechanic-heavy slots is well established in the industry. Primate King Megaways, launched in April 2024, continues this tradition with a jungle-themed adventure that combines the studio’s characteristic polish with an innovative progression system. The game features up to 117,649 ways to win across 6 reels (5 base plus 1 unlockable), making it immediately competitive within the crowded Megaways landscape. What sets this release apart isn’t just the sheer volume of potential winning combinations, but rather the way Red Tiger has layered the Primate Evolution mechanic into the core gameplay loop, rewarding players who engage with the full feature set rather than simply chasing scatter symbols.

Base Game & Features

Primate King Megaways operates on a 6-reel grid with 2-7 dynamic rows, generating up to 117,649 ways to win on each spin. The standard five reels make up the playable area, with the sixth reel unlocking through the Primate Evolution feature. Bet range spans 0.10 to £2.00 per spin, though some regions offer a maximum of £20. The Megaways mechanic means the number of symbol positions varies on each reel with every spin, creating unpredictable winning combinations that keep the base game engaging even between bonus features.

The game’s visual design immediately impresses. Jungle and Aztec-themed imagery creates a cohesive aesthetic, with vibrant greens, golds, and warm tones dominating the colour palette. The soundtrack remains subtle during base play, only intensifying when wins land or features trigger. This design choice prevents audio fatigue during extended sessions while maintaining excitement when momentum builds.

The Primate Wild Feature

Fully stacked wild symbols appear on reels 2, 3, 4, or 5, each carrying a multiplier between 2x and 7x that applies to all wins containing the wild. If the Primate Wild lands without creating a winning combination, it locks in place and the multiplier increases by 1x every spin until a winning combination forms. This mechanic creates genuine tension–watching a wild’s multiplier climb from 3x to 5x to 7x before finally landing a win taps into the psychological appeal of delayed gratification that keeps players engaged.

Bonus Features

The Primate Evolution meter is where Primate King Megaways truly distinguishes itself from the standard Megaways formula. This three-stage progression system appears on the sixth reel and requires 30 Gold Coins to advance through each stage. Stage 1 awards a life point, Stage 2 adds a life point and destroys the 9 symbol from the grid, and Stage 3 adds another life point while unlocking the sixth reel with a restricted symbol pool containing only high-value symbols and gold coins. This progression mechanic transforms what could be a simple scatter hunt into a genuine game within the game, where players must make decisions about resource allocation.

Free spins trigger when a gold coin lands on the unlocked sixth reel while the Primate Wild is active. Players start with 4 base free spins, with each life point from the Primate Evolution meter adding one additional spin (up to 7 total). During these bonus spins, the Primate Wild multiplier carries over from the base game, and low-value symbols progressively disappear, increasing the likelihood of landing high-value combinations. This carry-over mechanic proves particularly valuable when players have built up a high multiplier before triggering the feature–a wild multiplied by 6x or 7x in free spins can generate substantial wins. The cascading reels system, where winning symbols are removed and new symbols fall to fill the gaps, continues throughout the bonus round, allowing for chain reactions of consecutive wins.

Our Honest Verdict

Primate King Megaways scores 6.8/10 and represents a solid but not exceptional entry in Red Tiger’s slot portfolio. The Primate Evolution mechanic is genuinely innovative, transforming the free spins hunt into a meaningful progression system that rewards longer play sessions. Visually, the game excels–the jungle aesthetic with Aztec elements feels authentic rather than generic, and the animation polish Red Tiger is known for shines throughout.

However, significant value concerns limit its appeal. The RTP sits at 95.70% as default, with operator-selectable variants down to 90.86%–all below the 96% industry standard. This matters. Combined with a maximum bet of £2.00 (or £20 in some regions), the theoretical 30,000x maximum win feels more like fiction than possibility. Player feedback consistently notes that despite the “very high volatility” label, actual gameplay feels surprisingly frequent in win frequency, though the bonus features themselves require patience to trigger.

This game appeals primarily to players with substantial budgets who value mechanical complexity and progression systems. Casual players seeking quick bonus hits or those seeking better RTP will find more appealing alternatives. For the right audience–mechanically sophisticated players willing to embrace longer play sessions–Primate King Megaways delivers engaging, polished gameplay that justifies its existence in the market.
