Riptide Pirates 3: Cannons Hot! Slot Review
Progress is a mechanic slots almost never give you. Riptide Pirates 3: Cannons Hot! does: leave its bonus grid with a ship half sunk, and the half-sunk ship is still there when you come back, so long as you return within 100 spins. That’s a bolder design decision than anything else here, and it’s what makes this more than another pirate reskin.
Underneath that sits a plain 5×3 reel set with 20 fixed paylines, 96.04% RTP and high volatility, with a hit frequency of 29.45% printed on the game’s own screens. Stakes run from 0.20 to 40.00 per spin.
It’s the work of Nailed It! Games, a studio whose two reviews on this site, Gold Mine Stacks 2 and Raging Gods: Olympus 2 Power Combo, both scored between 7 and 7.5 when we reviewed them. Both of those were high-volatility builds too. This is a studio that likes its games loud.
The base game, it has to be said, is the quiet part. Wilds substitute, Bonus Symbols collect to cannons, and that’s the whole story until the Bonus Game arrives. Whether the bonus carries the weight is the question this review answers.
Base Game & Features
The reels are the standard pirate roll call: a skull-capped captain at the top of the paytable, four pirate crew members behind him, and six card royals filling the bottom. Wins pay left to right from the first reel, and only the highest combination counts per payline. It’s a familiar layout that does exactly what you expect and nothing more.
Wild Symbols
Wilds substitute for every symbol except the Bonus Symbols, and they form their own winning combinations too. They appear in the base game only, with a cannon-fire flourish on winning lines. It’s solid, unspectacular work.
Paying Symbols
The paytable, quoted as multiples of the total bet:
- Skull/Captain: 0.5x for three, 1.2x for four, 5x for five
- Female Pirate: 0.4x / 0.8x / 2x
- Male Pirate (hat): 0.4x / 0.8x / 2x
- Purple Bandana Pirate: 0.4x / 0.8x / 2x
- Red Bandana Pirate: 0.4x / 0.8x / 2x
- A, K, Q, J, 10, 9: 0.2x / 0.4x / 1.2x each
Five royals at 1.2x is a thin top end for the base game. The real money is at sea, not on the reels.
Bonus Symbols and Cannons
There are three Bonus Symbols, each tied to one of the game’s three cannons: Jackpot, Chest and 4 Shot. Every Bonus Symbol that lands collects into its corresponding cannon, and every one carries a chance to trigger the Bonus Game outright.
Each collected symbol also increases the odds of that cannon being the one active when the bonus fires. The collection animation itself is cosmetic; the help file says so plainly. What matters is the stockpile.
Riptide Pirates 3: Cannons Hot! Bonus Game and Reset Counter
The Bonus Game moves play to a 10×10 grid of sea packed with targets, and the triggering Bonus Symbol decides which cannon you get. Only one cannon is active per round, and each comes with a different promise.
The Three Cannons
- Jackpot Cannon: three shots, and the first is guaranteed to strike a Jackpot ship
- Chest Cannon: three shots, opening on a guaranteed treasure chest hit
- 4 Shot Cannon: four shots with no guaranteed first hit, but an extra chance to find a target
Shots fire at random sections of the grid. Every hit restores the shot count to its starting value, so a cannon that keeps hitting keeps shooting. The round only ends when the shots run dry or the board is cleared.
What’s Floating on the Board
- 28 boats paying 2x, 3x, 5x or 10x the bet
- 4 Jackpot ships: 1-section ships pay 15x, 2-section ships 50x, 3-section ships 200x, and 4-section ships 5,000x the bet
- 6 chests, each carrying one of the six bonus modifiers
Jackpot ships are chipped away section by section at 1x the bet per hit, and sinking the whole ship awards the full prize. Helpfully, the game launches with one section of the 4-section and 3-section ships already shot, so the big prizes start part-built.
The Six Chest Modifiers
- Treasure: instant prize of 10x, 20x, 50x or 100x the bet
- Prize Booster: raises all boat prizes by 2x, 3x, 5x or 10x, but leaves Jackpot prizes alone
- Continuous Prize Booster: raises boat prizes by 2x, 3x or 5x on every turn for the rest of the feature
- Jackpot Hunter: hits one section of every ship on the board
- Double: awards 2x the bet instantly and doubles boat prizes for the rest of the feature
- Cluster Bomb: hits between three and five boats at once
Each modifier can only be awarded once per Bonus Game, which caps the stacking but keeps the late board meaningful. The 5,000x ship is the prize the whole design points at, and Prize Booster pointedly won’t touch it.
The Reset Counter
This is the game’s best idea. Once the first Bonus Game completes, a counter appears in the base game starting at 100. It ticks down one spin at a time, and if the bonus retriggers before it hits zero, the Bonus Game resumes with the same board state you left behind. Half-sunk ships stay half-sunk.
If the counter reaches zero, the board clears and goes dormant until the next bonus. The countdown window also grows with use: 100 spins first, then 125, then 150, then 200 from the fourth activation onward.
Changing your bet doesn’t reset the state either, so the progress follows the player, not the stake.
Bonus Buy and Boost
There are three ways to bend the rules, all paid. The Bonus Buy triggers the Bonus Game instantly with a random cannon active, at the price shown in-game. It may not be available above a certain bet threshold.
Boost triples the chance of triggering the bonus naturally, at a cost of 2.5x your base bet per spin. All payouts still calculate on the base stake. It can be toggled on or off in the base game only.
Bonus Recharge appears at the end of a Bonus Game and offers another set of shots on a random cannon at the displayed price, rather than returning you to the reels. The RTP barely moves across all three: 96.05% with any of them, against 96.04% without. None of them is a trap mathematically, which is more than some games manage.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.6/10
The trade on offer here is a simple one: give up everything that happens between bonuses in exchange for a bonus worth returning to. The base game pays 5x for five captains and 1.2x for five royals, which is filler by any measure, and the game doesn’t pretend otherwise. If you play slots for the spin itself, this isn’t built for you and no amount of cannon animation will fix that.
What it does badly, it does badly on purpose. What it does well is structure: a bonus round with three genuinely different cannons, six one-shot modifiers that make the late board matter, and a Reset Counter that turns a 20-minute session into part of something longer. That counter is the whole argument, and it’s a good one.
It suits the grinder, the player who likes an unfinished job waiting for them and will sit through quiet reels to finish it. The 5,000x ship doesn’t need to land for that to work, either; the progress itself is the hook. For everyone else, there are louder games.
