Royal Gems Slot Review
On a sunlit palace terrace, an open treasure chest pours gold across the marble, and every gem you win drops into a board that refuses to let go of it. Royal Gems keeps its winning clusters locked on the reels from one spin to the next, which makes it one of the few cluster games where a win is a commitment rather than a goodbye.
It all plays out on a 7×7 cluster-pays grid at 96% RTP, with stakes from 0.10 to 50 and a calculated maximum win of 3,000x the bet. Gems run in the family at this studio: Gemtastic and Gems Gone Wild work similar ground, and Dragons Clusterbuster takes the locking idea somewhere louder.
The chest sits open on the left of the reels from the first spin. Filling it is the game’s whole job.
Cluster Pays on a 7×7 Grid
There are no paylines and no reels in the usual sense. Royal Gems pays for clusters of five or more matching symbols connected on the 7×7 grid, and the biggest prizes want the whole board: top pays begin at 60 or more symbols and peak with all 64 positions in a single colour.
Just over a third of spins, 35.3%, land a paying cluster. The full paytable, as printed on the game’s information screen:

Values fall away sharply below the gold and orange gem, the only symbol that pays more than 500x at any size. Five symbols is all the game carries; there’s no wild and no separate bonus symbol on the board.
Locked Clusters
Four things drive the game, and each one hooks into the locking cycle that runs through every spin:
- Locked Clusters – trigger whenever a cluster forms; the cluster pays and holds for the next spin
- Crown Upgrade – triggers when a Crown symbol lands; it upgrades a cluster and triggers a lock
- Super Gems – appear on the reels as oversized gems in three sizes
- Full Screen – triggers when the whole grid fills with clusters; a 2x multiplier applies and everything unlocks
When a cluster forms it pays out and then locks in place for the next spin. If that spin grows the cluster or forms new ones, those pay out and lock too, and the sequence repeats for as long as the board keeps advancing.
A spin that produces neither a new cluster nor any growth unlocks everything, and nothing pays on that spin. Clusters also clear after paying out on a full screen, which is the mechanic’s natural endpoint.
One detail worth knowing: locked symbols are saved per bet level. Each stake you play keeps its own board state, and switching stakes switches you back to where that level left off. Drop down to a lower bet mid-run and the board you were building stays where you left it, ready when you return.
The result plays closer to a puzzle game than a fruit machine. The board carries forward, and every spin either advances it or resets it.
Crown Upgrade
The Crown symbol lifts whichever cluster it lands against, boosting the symbols inside it and locking it in place for the next spin. Up to three Crowns can appear on the reels at once, so a single spin can strengthen three separate clusters in one go.
There’s no pick, no wheel and no separate screen. It’s a direct boost to whatever’s already on the board, and it feeds the same locking cycle as everything else.
Super Gems
Some gems arrive oversized. A Super Gem is a single large symbol that counts as several small ones sitting together, and it comes in 2×2, 3×3 and 6×6 sizes. It lands like any other symbol and swells a cluster accordingly.
A 6×6 Super Gem covers more than half the grid on its own, which makes it the most direct route to filling the board. The smaller sizes mostly serve to thicken clusters that are already building, converting an eight-symbol group into something that suddenly pays at the next tier up.
Full Screen
Fill the entire grid with locked clusters and a 2x multiplier applies to the win, after which everything unlocks and the board resets. Since the top symbol pays 1,500x for all 64 positions, that doubled payout is where the game’s ceiling comes from.
Reaching it needs more than luck on one spin. A full screen only arrives at the end of a locking run that survives several consecutive spins without stalling, with Crowns and Super Gems pushing the board closer as it grows.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.1/10
This is a game of stacking the treasury one handful at a time. Sessions move at the speed of the board: something locks, something grows, and the tension lives in whether the next spin keeps the run alive. That’s the reason to choose it, and it’s also the best thing about it: your progress is sitting on the screen in front of you, not hidden behind three scatters.
The problem is what the board is usually worth. Most locked clusters pay fractions of the stake, and the 2x full-screen multiplier is thin reward for filling 49 positions, so long runs can amount to very little. There’s no second round to rescue a flat session either.
It suits the builder: someone who enjoys watching a board take shape over a hundred spins and doesn’t need a bonus round to justify them. Anyone chasing big single hits will find the treasury door opens too rarely. For the patient sort, the chest is genuinely worth filling.
