Story Of Egypt Egyptian Darkness Slot Review
A torch-lit tomb, gold pillars framing the dark, and a jackal-headed figure glaring out from a gilded portrait: Story Of Egypt Egyptian Darkness goes for the shadowy end of the Egyptian theme, and the artwork carries it well. Spinomenal have built this one on a 5×4 grid with 50 fixed paylines, running at 95.79% RTP.
The draw is a set of random base game modifiers feeding into a free spins round where a wheel picks your feature. It sits in familiar company alongside the studio’s Story Of Medusa II The Golden Era and Egyptian Rebirth II The Mummys Return, with Ra’s Golden Loot for good measure.
The Base Game and Its Symbols
Wins pay across 50 fixed lines, left to right, with the bet per line locked at the value you set. It’s a conventional setup, and the game doesn’t complicate it. What gives the base game its character is the artwork: a cracked deep-blue stone backdrop behind the reels, purple glows flickering at the edges like torchlight, and blurred gold murals suggesting the scene continues beyond the frame.
A woman in an Egyptian headdress watches from the top-left corner, and the jackal-headed figure holds his post at the lower edge. Gold filigree and carved pillars frame the whole play area. It’s a rich piece of presentation for a game built on straightforward line payouts, and the dark palette keeps it from reading like every other Egyptian title on the shelf.
The wild counts as any symbol except the Bonus, and six wilds on a winning line pay bet per line x1,000. Wilds arrive with a glowing, lightning-edged effect that makes them easy to spot mid-spin. Two medium symbols lead the paytable, each paying from three of a kind up to six:
- Pharaoh-chariot symbol: 35 for three, 80 for four, 300 for five, 1,000 for six
- Anubis symbol: 30 for three, 80 for four, 250 for five, 750 for six
Values are printed as currency amounts, with no bet figure visible to express them as multiples of the bet. The royal run of A, K, Q, J and 10 fills out the lower end of the table. With six reels’ worth of symbols in play across 50 lines, the medium symbols and their colossus versions are where the meaningful money sits.
Three modifiers can interrupt any base game spin at random, and each runs on a three-level scale. Which one appears, and at which level, isn’t something you can influence. Here’s what each does.
Win Multiplier
The Win Multiplier is the simplest of the three. When it lands, any win in that round gets boosted by a set amount, with the level deciding how big the boost is.
- Level 1: win x2
- Level 2: win x3
- Level 3: win x4
Synced Reels
Synced Reels locks two or more reels so they spin up identical symbols. When medium symbols land on synced reels, they arrive as colossus versions covering more positions, which is where this modifier does its real work. The level decides how many reels sync up.
- Level 1: reels 3-4 synced
- Level 2: reels 3-5 synced
- Level 3: reels 2-5 synced
At the top level, four of the six reels spin as one, and every medium symbol on them lands as a colossus. That’s the setup most likely to produce the kind of six-of-a-kind the paytable’s top row is built around. A four-reel sync with the Pharaoh-chariot symbol stacked across it is the base game’s best-case scenario.
Power Spin
Power Spin strips low-value card symbols off the reels for one round, leaving only the symbols worth having. The higher the level, the more royals go:
- Level 1: 10 and J removed
- Level 2: 10, J, Q and K removed
- Level 3: 10, J, Q, K and A removed
At its ceiling, every card symbol vanishes, so the reels can only line up picture symbols and wilds. It’s a round with no low-value clutter in it at all. Stacked with a Win Multiplier, it’s the combination the base game occasionally hands over.
Free Spins and the Wheel of Features
The bonus triggers on a pair: one Bonus symbol on the first reel from the left, one on the sixth. Land both and 10 free spins start, with the bet per line carried over from the triggering round.
Before the spins begin, a wheel of features appears, and one spin of it decides which feature runs on every free spin in the round. Whatever the wheel stops on, that modifier is active for the duration. So a Level 3 Synced Reels result means four synced reels on all ten spins.
Retriggers are where the round gets interesting. Landing the Bonus pair again brings two more free spins and another go on the wheel. What that second result means depends on what’s already running: it can sit a different feature alongside the current one, or bump an existing feature up a level. Stack Win Multiplier on top of Power Spin, or push Synced Reels from Level 1 to Level 3, and the round changes shape completely.
The wheel can be spun a maximum of five times. After the fifth, the Bonus symbol disappears from the reels for the rest of the round, so the feature build has a hard ceiling of five additions or upgrades across the whole bonus.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
This is a game about the long build. You spin in a dark, gold-trimmed tomb, collect whatever modifier the game randomly hands you, and hope the wheel is kind when the bonus finally arrives. That build, not the theme, is the reason to sit down at this one.
The retrigger system is the best thing here. Each wheel spin adds or upgrades a feature, up to five times, so a round that starts plain can end up stacked and frantic, and every retrigger genuinely changes what you’re playing. Against that, the returns picture is the weak spot: the game never says what a fully stacked round is worth, and you’re left gambling on potential it hasn’t quantified.
It’s for players who like a bonus round that grows in the playing, not anyone after one enormous number. The tomb stays dark, but for the right player, the lamps are lit.
