The Pickaxe of Destiny

The Pickaxe of Destiny Slot Review

A grinning prospector crouches at the lower edge of the screen, loading glowing nuggets into a wooden mine cart while tree roots dangle through the earth above the reels. The Pickaxe of Destiny hides its real paytable in plain sight: the line wins barely matter, and nearly everything worth chasing sits in the cash values stamped on the gems, waiting for a Miner to sweep them up.

R3Spin has made a patient game of it. The Pickaxe of Destiny runs a 5×3 grid with 10 paylines at 94.0% RTP on low-medium volatility, with a top prize of 2,111x the stake.

It sits alongside Bass King in Gold and The Quest for Excalibucks in the studio’s catalogue, with Lucky Coin Festival also in the same stable. The digging here is gentler than the pickaxe on the tin suggests.

Base Game & Features

Wins pay left to right across 10 fixed lines on a 5×3 grid. The Pickaxe itself is the top-paying symbol by a clear margin, and the drop-off below it is steep. Here’s what each symbol returns as a multiple of the total stake:

• Pickaxe – 2x for two, 8x for three, 15x for four, 30x for five
• Wild – 8x for three, 15x for four, 30x for five
• Gold Pan – 1x for two, 4x for three, 8x for four, 20x for five
• Lantern – 3x for three, 6x for four, 15x for five
• Beans – 2x for three, 4x for four, 8x for five
• Blue, Gold, Red and Light Blue Gems, mixed gems, A and K – 0.5x for three, 1x for four, 2x for five
• Q, J and 10 – 0.2x for three, 0.4x for four, 1x for five

Notice the shape of that ladder. The Pickaxe and the Gold Pan pay from just two of a kind, the Lantern from three, and the gem tier shares its values with the A and K.

That gives the gems two jobs at once: they pay as line symbols and carry the collect values that drive the rest of the game. The wild substitutes for all paying symbols and is available on every reel, which is all it needs to do given how much of the game’s interest sits with the gems.

Collect the Gems

Gem symbols land carrying a displayed cash value, and those values are paid out when a Miner symbol collects them. The gems don’t sit still, either. They have a chance of being added to the reels at the start of a game, a chance of being added at the end of a losing one, and their values have a chance of being increased at the end of a game.

Those three random nudges mean a spin that looks finished isn’t always finished. A losing game can still end with fresh gems on the reels for the next one, and a gem already sitting in view can grow before anyone collects it.

Mixed gem symbols can also form a winning combination among themselves, so a screen full of different-coloured gems isn’t a missed opportunity.

The Miner Symbol

The Miner lives on reels 1 and 5 and nowhere else. When one lands, it sweeps up every nugget in view and pays the value shown on each. Two Miners together, one on each outer reel, sweep the board twice.

That’s the whole trick, and it’s a good one: the outer reels carry more weight than a 10-line layout usually allows.

PLAY+ and Stake Options

Stakes run from 0.10 to 100 per spin. A PLAY+ toggle, labelled for its increased bonus chance, boosts the odds of triggering the free spins at the cost of raising the active stake by 50%. It’s a straightforward price for a straightforward benefit, and players who chase the bonus round will want it on.

Turbo Spins are available for faster play, though the option may be unavailable in certain jurisdictions.

The Pickaxe of Destiny Free Spins & Bonuses

Free Spins

Free Spins symbols trigger the round, with only one able to appear per reel. The awards scale with the number that land:

• 3 Free Spins symbols – 8 free spins
• 4 Free Spins symbols – 9 free spins
• 5 Free Spins symbols – 10 free spins

The round runs on a conversion system. The 10 symbol is replaced with gems from the off, and the J, Q, K and A symbols are then replaced with gems in sequence. Each replacement stage is tracked on a trail that every Miner symbol in view increments, and reaching a prize position awards an additional +5 free spins.

The remaining spins play out first before any extra games are added, so a late trail trigger still gets its full value. It’s a build with a visible finish line: the further the trail climbs, the fewer low-value symbols remain on the reels, and the heavier each spin gets.

Four trail prize positions sit along the route, one for each royal as it converts, so a full run can add up to 20 extra games on top of the starting award.

Mine Cart Bonus

Every gem that lands in view carries a random chance of setting off the Mine Cart Bonus. Gems then fall from the top of the screen with a chance to land in the cart’s bowl, and each one that does increments the current top win. The more gems that land, the greater the win.

Diamond symbols display one of four pots on them, and landing a diamond in the bowl fills one slot of its matching pot. Filling every slot on a pot adds that pot’s value to the total win at the end of the game, and each pot can only be awarded once. The bonus ends when the gems stop falling, paying out everything accumulated.

If the Mine Cart Bonus and Free Spins both trigger on the same spin, the Mine Cart plays out first. The cart is also the only place the four pots exist; they don’t appear in the base game or the free spins, which makes a completed pot the rarest single event the game offers.

Our Honest Verdict

Overall Rating: 7.1/10

This is slow panning, not dynamite. You spend your time watching gems stack up their values, hoping a Miner lands on an outer reel to cash the whole board in, and when one finally does, that single sweep is the moment the whole game is built around. It’s a quiet kind of satisfaction, and it’s the reason to pick this over a louder miner.

The free spins round is the best thing here because it rewards patience with momentum: every royal that converts makes the next spin better than the last. The floor is the problem. Below the Pickaxe, the pays fall away fast, and low-medium volatility means the ceiling stays well short of what the genre’s big hitters offer.

It suits players who enjoy a long, steady build and count the bonus trail as entertainment in itself, not those chasing one career-making hit. The lamp-light’s warm down here, and the nuggets do keep coming, but nobody’s getting rich on a single cartload.
