The Pick of Destiny Slot Review
Down a timber-framed shaft, past pale tree roots and a grinning prospector with his heaped ore cart, The Pick of Destiny pays you for clearing up. That’s the arguable part: the ten paylines here matter less than the litter on them, because gems land carrying their own prices and a Miner sweeps the lot. Strip out the collecting and you’d have one of the thinnest ten-line games going; R3Spin have bet the entire mine on the sweep.
It runs on a 5×3 grid with 10 paylines, a 94.0% RTP and low-to-medium volatility, with stakes from 0.10 to 100. There’s more from the studio where this came from, including Bass King in Gold, The Quest for Excalibucks and Lucky Coin Festival. Whether the gem economy pays off for the patience it asks is what the shaft is hiding.
Base Game & Features
Ten fixed paylines pay left to right across the five reels, and only the highest combination on each line counts. It’s a conventional layout, and deliberately so: the game’s character lives in what sits on top of it. Wins are formed in the usual way, but the symbols doing the earning aren’t always the ones you’d expect.
The wild substitutes for all paying symbols and can land on any reel, which is its whole job here. Mixed gem symbols can also form a winning combination between themselves, which quietly widens the base game beyond the ten lines.
Collect the Gems
Every spin runs alongside a collection economy. Gem symbols land on the reels carrying a cash value, and a Miner symbol on reel 1 or 5 collects every nugget in view and pays its displayed value. Land a Miner on both reels in the same spin and the values are collected twice.
The gems don’t sit still between spins, either. They can be randomly added to the reels at the end of a losing game, added again at the start of the next one, and their values can be increased at the end of a game. The values run as follows:
- 0.5x, 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 15x and 20x the stake
- Mini, Minor, Major and Mega jackpot prizes
All win amounts are multiples of the current stake, so a 20x gem pays 20 times your stake on collection. The jackpot gems are the ones worth watching for, though they’re priced accordingly in how rarely they turn up.
Paytable
The line pays are modest, as they should be in a game built on collection, and they’re all multiples of the total stake:
- Pickaxe: 2x, 8x, 15x and 30x for two, three, four and five of a kind
- Gold Pan: 1x, 4x, 8x and 20x
- Lantern: 3x, 6x and 15x for three, four and five
- Beans: 2x, 4x and 8x for three, four and five
- Red Gem, Blue Gem, Gold Gem, Blue Crystal, A and K: 0.5x, 1x and 2x for three, four and five
- Q, J and 10: 0.2x, 0.4x and 1x for three, four and five
The Pickaxe and the Gold Pan are the only symbols that pay for a pair. Five of a kind on the premium is worth 30x, the same as five Wilds, which pay 8x, 15x and 30x for three, four and five, and the royals trickle in below that. The paytable isn’t where this game keeps its money.
The Pick of Destiny Free Spins & Mine Cart Bonus
Free Spins
Three, four or five Free Spins symbols in view award 8, 9 or 10 free spins respectively, with only one Free Spins symbol able to land per reel. It’s a plain trigger for a round that isn’t plain at all.
During the round, every Miner symbol in view increments a trail, and the 10 symbol is sequentially replaced with gems as you progress. Reaching the prize positions on the trail awards an additional +5 free spins, and any position you trigger plays out the remaining spins first before the extra games are added.
The round only ends once every remaining game has been played, so a late trail hit extends things properly.
Mine Cart Bonus
Every gem that lands in view has a random chance of triggering the Mine Cart Bonus, and the number of gems on screen has no bearing on either the chance of it firing or the total it awards. When it does, gems fall from the top of a new screen with a chance to land in a bowl, and each one that lands increments the running win.
Diamond symbols carry one of four pots on them, and landing a Diamond in the bowl fills a slot on its matching pot. Fill every slot on a pot and its value is added to the total win at the end of the game, with each pot payable only once.
The round finishes when the gems stop falling and the accumulated total is paid. If the Mine Cart and Free Spins both trigger on the same spin, the Mine Cart plays out first.
PLAY+ and Turbo Spins
PLAY+ is a button toggle that increases the chance of triggering Free Spins, at the cost of raising your selected stake by 50%. Better access to the round, paid for on every spin rather than at the door.
Turbo Spins is the other toggle, speeding the reels up for faster sessions where the jurisdiction allows it.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.1/10
This is a game about watching a shaft fill up. Most spins pay scraps, but the gems keep arriving, their values keep climbing, and there’s always something half-finished on the reels – that slow accumulation is the whole reason to be here rather than on a punchier ten-liner. A Miner landing on reels 1 and 5 together, sweeping everything twice, is the payday the patience is for.
The Mine Cart Bonus is the strongest thing in the game, because four pots filling in parallel means one round can pay off in several directions at once. The weakness is everything underneath it: 94.0% is a thin return for low-to-medium volatility, and the line pays are small enough that the collecting has to carry the entire game. Some days it won’t.
It’s for players who enjoy the build more than the bang – modest stakes, long sessions, a soft spot for watching numbers stack up. Anyone after one big hit will find the seam runs shallow here. For the patient, there’s enough gold in this cart to keep the lamp burning.
