With his sights set firmly on Asgard, Loki’s deception threatens the realm of the Gods, forcing Odin, Thor, Freya, and Heimdall to defend their home, but will they be able to do just that?
Let’s play on and find out!
Viking Runecraft: Apocalypse Base Game and Features
Viking Runecraft: Apocalypse is a 7×7 Video Slot with a Cluster Pays mechanic. Winning combinations are formed when 5 or more of the same symbols land either Horizontally or Vertically on the grid.
The minimum bet available here is £.€0.05 per spin and the maximum bet available is £.€100 per spin, with plenty of other options in between the two. This game has a theoretical RTP of 96.50% and a max win cap of 10,000x.
In terms of symbols, the highest-paying regular symbol here is the Sword, followed by the Hammer, Skull, and Horn. Low-paying symbols fall to Red, Blue, Purple, Green, and Yellow Runic Tiles.
Each time a winning cluster is formed, all winning symbols will be removed from the grid, and new symbols will drop down from above via an Avalanche, possibly creating even more winning clusters.
Spirit Wild
After a winning cluster is formed in the base game, a special Wild symbol named The Spirit is left behind in its place when the winning cluster is removed.
If the Spirit Wild is part of a winning cluster in the same spin, it will be collected and stored in the Spirit Wild Collector. Spirit Wilds substitute for all High and Low-paying symbols in the paytable.
Gift of the Gods
Filling the Spirit Wild Collector with a total of 4 Spirit Wilds during any one spin will activate a random Gift of the Gods feature from the list below.
- Odin’s Power – Creates between 1 to 3 sets of up to 3 Wilds in adjacent Horizontal or Vertical patterns.
- Thor’s Thunder – Creates up to 10 Wilds.
- Freya’s Magic – Creates between 2 and 4 pairs of Wilds in Horizontal or Vertical patterns.
- Heimdall’s Vision – Creates between 2 and 4 pairs of Wilds in diagonal patterns.
Loki’s Mischief
During any random non-winning spin in the base game, Loki’s Mischief feature can trigger at random. Loki’s Mischief is a feature where between 4 and 8 Mystery symbols appear across the grid at random.
Once they appear, they will reveal the same High or Low-paying symbol from the paytable (excluding Wilds).
Power of the Aesir
Activating the Power of the Aesir feature is done by filling the Charge Meter on the left side of the grid with 35 winning symbols during any one spin. Once this happens, 1 of 4 exciting Modifiers will trigger from the list below.
- Heaven’s Spear – All Weapon symbols (Sword, Hammer, Skull, and Horn) are transformed into the same symbols.
- Mjolnir’s Strike – Destroys and transforms up to 10 High or Low-paying symbols at random.
- Folkvang’s Force – Upgrades 1 type of symbol by transforming it to the next Higher-paying symbol.
- Trumpet’s Screech – Destroys or transforms symbols around 3 randomly chosen symbols.
If the Charge Meter is 5 symbols away from triggering the Ragnorak Free Spin and there are no more wins, the Aftershock feature may be triggered to create a win.
Aftershock
Once the Aftershock feature is activated, it will first select random symbols from the grid, then travel across a number of connected symbols, transforming them into the same symbol type as it goes.
As mentioned above, this feature can only be triggered if the Charge Meter is 5 symbols away from triggering the Ragnorak Free Spin.
Ragnarok Free Spin
With or without the help of the Aftershock feature, when the Charge Meter is filled with 65 symbols and there are no more winning clusters, the Ragnorak Free Spin is activated.
During the Ragnarok Free Spin, all 4 Power of the Aesir modifiers are awarded, one after the other for 1 Free Spin. Each of the Power of the Aesir modifiers activates once there are no more Avalanches.
During this time, the Spirit Wild Collector is not able to trigger the Gift of the Gods feature, but up to 20 Spirit Wilds can be collected. All collected Spirit Wild symbols will be added back onto the grid at the end of the Ragnarok Free Spin when there are no more winning clusters, for a chance to activate another Avalanche.
In addition to this, the Charge Meter is replaced with a Multiplier Charge Meter. Collecting 25, 50, 75, and 100 symbol wins will award a Multiplier value of x2, x3, x5, and x10 respectively. The active Multiplier is then applied to the total win at the end of the Ragnarok Free Spin.
Viking Runecraft: Apocalypse: Our Verdict
We’ve learned never to underestimate Play’n GO when it comes to their Cluster Pays, grid-style slots. Reactoonz and Wild Frames have always been popular choices with players, but will Viking Runecraft: Apocalypse have the same effect?
Does Viking Runecraft: Apocalypse top the likes of Reactoonz or Wild Frames? Maybe not, but it’s a great addition to Play’n GO’s Cluster Pays portfolio nonetheless. If you’re looking for a new Norse Mythology title to add to your collection, then Viking Runecraft: Apocalypse is a viable choice.
Viking Runecraft: Apocalypse definitely gives off Legend of the Ice Dragon vibes, both loaded with interesting features that are triggered through special Charge Meters. Each feature is unique and gripping which makes for exciting gameplay.
However, making your way to the top of the Charge Meter to trigger the Ragnarok Free Spin is not for the faint of heart, and is rather testing at times. Will all our hard work to get there be worth the reward? 1 Free Spin seemed a little unfair, but it’s not the number of Free Spins you have, but rather what it’s capable of.
If you’re still not sold, then take a look at the statistics. Viking Runecraft: Apocalypse has a theoretical RTP of 96.50%, and on a good day, Viking Runecraft is capable of hitting a max win cap of up to 10,000x.
All in all, Viking Runecraft: Apocalypse is a solid Cluster Pays title from the legends that are Play’n GO, and one that we think will become a big hit with players who are fond of both Norse Mythology and a Cluster Pays slot.
