Ancient Island Megaways – Base Game
Base Game & Features
Ancient Island Megaways is a highly volatile 6-reel Video Slot featuring BTG’s Megaways mechanic, which allows up to 117,649 ways to win in a single spin. Wins occur when 3 or more identical symbols land from left to right, starting from the leftmost reel.
This game displays 5 High and Low-paying symbols, all of which produce wins between 0.1x and 5x your bet. Wild symbols appear on reels 2-5, substituting for all symbols except Scatters.
When a winning combination is present, each winning symbol is removed and replaced with new symbols via an Avalanche Feature. This enables additional wins to be created in the same spin.
Wild & Top Modifiers
Each time a Wild symbol hits in the base game, it will expand to fill the entire reel it appears. Above the main reel set is an additional Sliding Reel, filled with random Modifiers that can activate in certain positions during any spin.
When a Wild expands over a Modifier, the respective modifier is awarded from the following outcomes:
- Cash Prize: Awards a random Cash Prize between 2x and 100x your bet
- Multiplier: Awards a random Multiplier between x2 and x50 which is applied to all winning combinations in that spin
- Max Ways: Increases the number of symbols on the reels, up to the maximum amount by adding new positions and symbols to the bottom of each reel
- Replace Non-winning Symbols: Before win evaluation, symbols that did not form winning combinations or a Wild Reel in the current configuration are replaced with new symbols
- Extra Wild Reel: A fully expanded Wild is added to reels 2, 3, 4, or 5 at random. If a Modifier is already above it, the respective modifier is triggered

Non-UK players can participate in the Free Spins round by purchasing the Bonus Buy option for an additional 100x their current bet.
Free Spins
Landing 4, 5, or 6 Scatters in the base game triggers the Free Spins round, awarding 12, 14, and 16 Free Spins respectively.

Our Verdict
Pragmatic Play has been surprising us with their new releases recently, so it comes as no surprise that they rightfully won Provider of the Year in our annual Christmas vote last year. With Ancient Island Megaways making a great first impression, Pragmatic Play are well on their way to winning it again for the second year running.
Without knowing what’s what in Ancient Island Megaways, the additional Sliding Reel can come off as a little confusing at first. Seeing the top reel flick through Cash Prizes and Mystery symbols, without them being awarded, is certainly unsettling, but once you’ve figured out that Wild symbols activate them, gameplay quickly becomes a breeze.
Unlike a regular Megaways title, Pragmatic Play has stripped Ancient Island bare of standard Mystery symbols and Increasing Multipliers. Instead, Wild symbols and 5 unique Modifiers are of most importance when accumulating big wins. Of all 5 modifiers, Pragmatic Play has thrown in a Max Megaways icon, meaning that the maximum 117,649 ways to win are well within grasp with each spin.
Thanks to the Modifier Reel, there are numerous ways to create or enhance wins with each spin in the base game and Free Spins round. Talking of Free Spins, it’s here that the Modifier Reel is guaranteed to display a Modifier in each of the 4 positions atop the Sliding Reel, but it’s landing Wild symbols that is the tricky part.
