Mark: Coin Collect: Piggy Patrons™ Extra Bank™ builds on the original Piggy Patrons™ formula. What were the main goals when evolving the game for this new release?
Julia: The original Coin Collect: Piggy Patrons™ hit the ground running and never looked back.
What we set out to do with Extra Bank™ is built on that momentum, adding new layers of entertainment that make the experience even more complex and engaging. Extra Bank™ does just that – it provides access to the jackpots in new ways that spice up both the base game and the three bonus games.
Mark: The Extra Bank™ feature is the headline addition. How does it work mechanically, and what makes it distinct from the Bonus Games already in the series?
Julia: The key to the feature is the Extra Bank™ symbol, which you can either scoop up via the Coin Collect feature in the base game or uncover through a Mystery Symbol in a Bonus Game.
The symbol opens Extra Bank™, which is like a mini version of the other Bonus Games in that prize coins land and stick, waiting to get collected at the end. But here there are only 6 positions to fill, and any multipliers from the triggering Coin Collect round or Bonus Game carry over into the feature to boost the coin win. Every time a new coin lands, it resets the countdown meter back to 3 to keep the action going.
The coin prizes are rewarding in themselves, but the real goal is to fill all 6 positions. That triggers the jackpot wheel, where one of the jackpots will be awarded – the Mini, Major or the extra-tempting 20,000x Grand.
Mark: Players can trigger three different bonus games through Mr Penny, Mr Bond, and Mr Bullion. Which of these characters is your personal favourite, and why?
Julia: It’s Mr Bullion, hands down. First off, there’s a clear value differentiation between the Bonus Games that the pigs can trigger. Mr Bullion’s are the highest, with coin prizes from 20x to 50x. Also, he has that top hat, so he wins the fashion prize.
Mark: The Mystery Symbols in the Bonus Games can reveal a range of different enhancements. How important was it to add that element of surprise to the bonus round?
Julia: We introduced Mystery Symbols in the original title to add another dash of excitement to the Bonus Games, and they really elevated the experience.
Just after a Mystery Symbol lands, it flips over to reveal a coin, a symbol that raises the multiplier, or a symbol that increases the spin reset value, letting the Bonus Game play longer. In this game, it can reveal an Extra Bank™ symbol as well.
Mystery Symbols add variety to the Bonus Game experience by bringing something beyond the cash prizes – that bit of excitement in the moment between the land and the reveal. What’s the Mystery Symbol going to give me? How is it going to make my Bonus Game even more valuable? Could it end up leading to Extra Bank™ and a shot at the Grand Jackpot? That’s the constant thrill Mystery Symbols bring.
Mark: Pig-themed slots have been a staple of the industry for years. What is it about piggy banks, wealth, and pig imagery that makes for such an enduring slot theme?
Julia: Pretty much everyone had a favourite piggy bank at some point in their childhood, so the theme comes naturally pre-loaded with warm feelings of nostalgia as well as associations with money and the excitement of a prize.
On top of that, having these expressive characters makes the game appealing and accessible in ways that you wouldn’t see with a generic wealth theme.
Mark: Coin Collect mechanics continue to be one of the most enduring feature styles in modern slots. Why do you think this format has proven so lasting?
Julia: Coin Collect works because it’s instant, it’s easy to understand and it can happen on any round.
The value is clear and there’s always something to play for. For game developers like us, that same simplicity means it’s easy for us to add novelty and innovation in the themes, the dynamics, the multipliers, etc., and build it into something fun and unique.
Mark: The game includes Boost options (where available) that increase the chances of triggering features. How important is player choice when designing modern slot experiences?
Julia: If you want to broaden your game’s appeal, it’s super important to build games that cater to different preferences, as much as that’s possible. Everyone’s got their own sweet spot for the level of action and reward. You have to let players play the way they want to play.
Mark: Was there a particular feature or mechanic that took the most creative effort to bring to life?
Julia: The shiny, new feature in this game was the Extra Bank™, so naturally that’s where we dug in, creatively speaking.
There were tonnes of details to work out, from the look of the trigger celebration to the dynamics of the coins landing to the sound of the jackpot wheel clicking over. We put in serious creative effort to make sure the rhythm of play was just right and every pixel was in its place. It was tough work, but the results were well worth it.
Mark: For someone who played the original Piggy Patrons™, what is the first thing they should head straight for in Extra Bank™?
Julia: It’s important to point out that everything that made the original great will be in this game as well – Coin Collect: Piggy Patrons™ Extra Bank™ isn’t so much a departure as it is an addition. That said, what to look out for is that Extra Bank™ symbol, which is the pathway to the new feature and a shot at that jackpot wheel. That’s what we’re most excited for the game to deliver.
Mark: Looking ahead, do you see further opportunities to expand the Piggy Patrons™ universe in future releases?
Julia: Yes, definitely. In fact, the next edition of the series is already in the works. We can’t reveal too much just yet about the next chapter in the Piggy Patrons™ story, but we think you’re gonna love it.
