🔥 Hot: Crime
We’re not exactly saying that crime pays (don’t do the time if you can’t do the crime, lads), but there’s something undeniably compelling about the world of crime, otherwise why else would true crime docs shoot straight to the top of Netflix charts? I digress, but clearly, it’s something a lot of slot developers agree with.
With many of us having grown up playing video games like GTA, crime-themed slots have historically been some of the best-performing titles in the industry. They offer insights into criminal masterminds without breaking any laws, through prison breaks, polished heist narratives, and classic cops’n’robbers chases. It also helps that these crime slots typically offer life-changing win potentials (without the need to rob a bank).
We don’t usually name names in these posts, but Nolimit City have built themselves a criminal empire on this theme, with break-out (pun intended) titles like San Quentin, Folsom Prison, and Stockholm Syndrome setting the bar high.
❌ Not: Egyptian
Oh, Egypt. Nice to visit on a holiday abroad, not-so-much when it comes to the 50th Book of Ra clone. It’s one of the OG slot themes, and arguably the one most in of retirement.
The pyramids, the pharaohs, the scarabs, the ancient lore – there’s no denying that ancient Egypt has provided some genuinely rich source material over the years. But after the ten thousandth game showing off golden pyramids, ankh symbols and eye of Horus scatters have all but lost their shine.
The Egyptian theme has become a template rather than a creative choice at this point, with most titles feeling very same-y. Until someone comes along with something truly fresh or different to do with ancient Egypt – like King Tut on the moon – we’re quite happy leaving the rest in the tomb.
🔥 Hot: Football
With the FIFA World Cup just around the corner, football-themed slots are coming across as the reel MVPs of the slots world.
Football is the world’s game, and its mass appeal translates naturally into slots. The big names, intense penalty shoot-outs, drama, and just the overall vibes – football is easily the perfect pitch for engaging gameplay to celebrate the international competition.
Expect a flood of football-themed releases – enough for a 5-a-side team plus subs – as the tournament draws closer, including the likes of Le Football Fan and Fishin’ Frenzy The Big Match, and expect players to lap them up.
❌ Not: Christmas
Seasonal themes are an awkward one, and Christmas slots in particular are a prime example as to why. The issue isn’t that they’re bad, it’s just that they’re almost always reskins.
Christmas is a time to let your imagination run wild, but festive slots often do the bare minimum and swap out the standard symbols for candy canes, presents, and a jolly bearded Santa, slap a jingle on the soundtrack, and the job’s a good’un. Zero thought or finesse to the process.
When you deep it, most Christmas slots bring absolutely nothing new to the table beyond a coat of red-and-green paint that you’ll be bored of way before December 25th.Once the season’s done and dusted, they’re essentially unplayable. Nobody’s loading up Jingle Bells Bonanza in June. Seasonal slots have a shelf life shorter than leftover turkey, and most developers don’t put in nearly enough effort to justify their existence beyond that four-week window in late November and December.
🔥 Hot: Fishing
Thanks to Big Bass , Fishin’ Frenzy, and the like, fishing slots have become one of the most loved (and talked about) slot genres in the industry – and with the influx of new arrivals, it’s clear that these waters show no sign or drying up (figuratively speaking) any time soon.
The tranquil waters, the calming nature, and simple-on-the-surface gameplay all lend themselves well to players who want a break from the busy nature of modern slots. The reward mechanics practically write themselves, too; reeling in big catches translating neatly to big wins.
Now, you could argue these waters are getting a little overfished… And fair play, there’s a lot of them out there – plenty of fish in the sea, after all. But when a fishing slot lands well, it really does reel players in – hook, line, and sinker.
❌ Not: Licensed Slots
Licensed slots – those built around existing TV shows, films, and other IP, sometimes have a habit of leaning so hard on the recognition factor that they forget to actually make a good slot. Slap a famous face on it as well as the licensed logo and use some SFX from the show, and hope the fanbase put two-and-two together.
The problem is that the best slots succeed on their own terms; through innovative mechanics, strong visuals, and engaging gameplay. Licensed slots too often skip that homework entirely, hiding behind borrowed nostalgia and fan fever, instead of building something worth playing andentirely original.
To be fair, though, there are exceptions. Some developers have taken licensed IP and built genuinely great games around it. But for every game that gets it right, there are all too many coasting by on name recognition.
Final Thoughts
That’s another edition of Hot or Not wrapped up. As always, these are our opinions; you can disagree and the world will keep on spinning – just like any slots with these themes.
The beauty of online slots is that there’s something out there for everyone, and there’s no right or wrong way to play.
