81 Super Expand Slot Review
A purple starfield, a gold frame glowing hot orange at its edges, and fruit turning in the void. That’s 81 Super Expand: a deep-space costume on what is, underneath it all, one of the plainest fruit machines you’ll spin all year – and the costume is doing less work than it thinks.
NetGame have built exactly one mechanic into it to justify the name. It runs on a 4×3 grid with 81 winning combinations, pays wherever symbols land on consecutive reels from left to right, and returns 95.22% over the long run. Whether one mechanic is enough is the whole question.
Base Game & Features
Four reels, three rows, and 81 ways to get paid. The count comes from the ways setup: symbols don’t sit on fixed paylines, they just need to appear anywhere on consecutive reels from the left. Each row position multiplies the possibilities, three rows across four reels, and the product is 81.
That single number is doing the work a payline diagram does in other games. There’s nothing to trace, no lines to follow across the grid; a win is simply three or four matching symbols turning up left to right, wherever they sit. On a grid this small, that means most three and four-of-a-kind clusters count.
It’s a paytable you can read once and remember, because it’s classic fruit-machine stock all the way down:
- Seven – 8x for three, 80x for four
- Bell – 6x for three, 60x for four
- Watermelon – 4x for three, 40x for four
- Grapes – 1x for three, 4x for four
- Plum – 1x for three, 4x for four
- Orange – 1x for three, 4x for four
- Lemon – 1x for three, 4x for four
- Cherries – 1x for three, 2x for four
The ladder splits cleanly in two. Above the line sit the seven, the bell and the watermelon, which pay multiples worth chasing. Below it sit the five fruits, which mostly exist to keep the balance ticking over between the bigger hits.
Each step of the ladder exactly doubles from three symbols to four, and the four-of-a-kind pays are where the real money sits. It’s also the harder ask: with only three rows per reel, four matching symbols across four reels is an event, not an expectation.
Three of the fruits – grapes, plum, orange and lemon alike – pay 1x for three and 4x for four, so they’re interchangeable as far as the arithmetic goes. A three-fruit win of any of them returns your stake exactly; four of them quadruples it. That’s the floor of the game, and on a low-variance run it’s the floor you’ll see most.
The Cherries are the runt of the litter, paying 2x for four where every other fruit pays 4x. They’re the only symbol that breaks the doubling pattern, so don’t get excited about a fourth Cherries symbol landing.
Only the highest combination per position pays, so a grid full of overlapping wins resolves to the best one. You’re never stacking a Cherries win on top of a bell win; the game takes the top result and moves on.
At the top, the seven is the one to watch. Four of them across the grid pays 80x, which is a full tenth of what the best symbols in bigger games hand out – but on a game this size, it lands often enough to feel like a genuine target rather than a rumour.
Wins come from clusters, not lines, which changes how you read the grid. A pair of matching symbols on reels one and two is never dead weight while a wild can still land behind them.
And that’s the shape of the base game: spin, count clusters, hope the top of the ladder shows up. Everything the game does beyond that runs through a single symbol.
81 Super Expand Bonus Features & Free Spins
There is no free spins round. No scatter, no second screen, no picker, no wheel. The bonus roster here is a single entry, and it’s the mechanic the game is named after.
What the wild does, in the order the game itself puts it:
- It replaces all symbols
- It can appear on any of the four reels
- It expands to cover the entire reel whenever it forms part of a winning combination
That last line is the whole feature. When a wild contributes to a win, it stretches to fill its reel before the win is counted, so a single wild becomes three wilds stacked.
On a 4×3 grid, a full wild reel covers every row, so any matching symbol on the reels either side of it completes a combination. One wild on reel two plus a single seven on reel one is a three-sevens win, because the wild supplies the middle and the ways setup does the rest.
The placement matters more than it would on a big grid. A wild expanding on reel one can only help wins starting from the left edge, which it always does here, while the same wild on reel four caps a combination rather than opening one.
The expansion only fires on winning spins. A wild that lands without completing anything just sits there, one symbol tall, waiting for the next spin with the rest of the fruit.
Because the wild stands in for everything, it also bridges gaps. Sevens on reels one and four with a wild between them is still a win, and the expanded middle reel makes those far-flung pairs far more reachable than they’d be on a fixed-line game.
It’s worth spelling out what a full expansion can be worth. A wild on each of reels one, two and three, with a seven on reel four, is a four-of-a-kind seven win at 80x – the same top prize as four natural sevens, but with only one symbol needing to cooperate. The wild doesn’t add a multiplier or boost the paytable; it just widens the door to the prizes that already exist.
That’s the entire feature set, and the game doesn’t dress it up further. The wild is the one mechanical idea here; everything else is presentation.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6/10
Spinning this is like watching a small quiet constellation: short rounds, fruit clusters, and now and then a wild filling a whole reel in a wash of light. You’d pick it precisely because nothing needs decoding – every spin tells you what it’s doing, in a game small enough to hold in your head.
That legibility is the real strength. Eight paytable entries, one mechanic, and a wild that turns near-misses into paid wins on a grid narrow enough for it to matter. Simple slots are easy to make and hard to make well, and this one is made well.
The weakness is just as plain: with the seven topping out at 80x and nothing beyond the wild to wait for, the ceiling sits low and the stretches between the top symbols run long. It suits anyone unhurried who wants retro fruit under neon and calm, readable spins. If you need a bonus round to stay interested, there are brighter stars elsewhere.
