Al the Chemist

Al the Chemist Slot Review

Al the Chemist is a game that hides almost all of its money behind a single mechanic, and pays you scraps for everything else. The proof is on the paytable: six of the nine symbols pay under 2x at their very best tier, while the multiplier ladder above the reels runs to 4,096x. Happy Duck built a game where the base game barely matters and the chain reaction is everything, which is either the whole appeal or the whole problem depending on your patience.

The setting does its bit for the argument. A white-haired chemist in pushed-up goggles grins over a riveted cauldron of bubbling green fluid, the reels framed in copper plumbing beneath a glass tank of glowing potion. It plays out on a 5×6 grid with scatter-style pays, where eight or more of the same symbol anywhere on the board wins.

Base Game & Features

Wins land as scatter pays. Eight or more matching symbols anywhere on the grid pays, the winning symbols vanish, and everything above drops down. New symbols fall in to fill the gaps.

The tumbling keeps going for as long as it keeps winning, and a single spin can chain as many tumbles as the board will supply. There’s no cap on the chain itself. Every tumble is another roll of the grid, and another chance for the potion to show up.

Compound X

The Compound X potion is where the game earns its title. When it lands, a chain reaction starts in the lab beside the reels and the global multiplier switches on at 2x. Each cascade that follows in the same tumbling sequence doubles it again.

The ladder tops out at 4,096x. The multiplier isn’t applied cascade by cascade: it’s applied once, at the end of the sequence, to the total of every cascade in that spin.

Compound X appears in the base game and the standard bonus. It’s absent from the Super Bonus, where the multiplier is already running from the first spin. The full ladder takes a long unbroken chain of cascades from a single activation, and it’s the whole prize the game is built around.

Symbols and Pays

Nine symbols pay, in tiers from eight matching up to fifteen or more. The purple book leads, the lab equipment sits in the middle, and six coloured flasks fill out the bottom. Values are multiples of stake:

• Purple Book – 1.5x for 8-9, 3x for 10-11, 4.5x for 12-14, 7.5x for 15+
• Microscope – 1x for 8-9, 2.1x for 10-11, 3.3x for 12-14, 6x for 15+
• Green Goggles – 0.7x for 8-9, 1.5x for 10-11, 2.4x for 12-14, 4.5x for 15+
• Blue Gear – 0.4x for 8-9, 0.9x for 10-11, 1.5x for 12-14, 3x for 15+
• Red Flask – 0.2x for 8-9, 0.3x for 10-11, 0.4x for 12-14, 1.8x for 15+
• Purple Flask – 0.1x for 8-9, 0.3x for 10-11, 0.3x for 12-14, 1.2x for 15+
• Yellow Flask – 0.1x for 8-9, 0.2x for 10-11, 0.3x for 12-14, 0.9x for 15+
• Green Flask – 0.1x for 8-9, 0.2x for 10-11, 0.2x for 12-14, 0.7x for 15+
• Blue Flask – 0.1x for 8-9, 0.2x for 10-11, 0.3x for 12-14, 0.6x for 15+

Those are modest figures on their own. The raw symbol values aren’t where the money lives: the multiplier does that work, and the base game’s job is mostly to keep the cauldron warm until the potion lands.

Quantity is rewarded unevenly. The tiers climb steeply for the premium symbols and barely move for the flasks, so a big win needs symbol count and the multiplier together, never either on its own.

Al the Chemist Bonus Spins & Super Bonus

The bonus symbol doesn’t pay anything itself. Three of them award 10 Bonus Spins; four award 10 Super Bonus Spins. Landing three more bonus symbols during either round adds 5 extra spins.

Bonus Spins

The standard round’s strength is persistence. Once the global multiplier has been activated, it carries between spins without resetting, holding whatever value it reached. It only climbs further when another Compound X lands, doubling again with each cascade in that spin.

That carry-over changes the shape of the round. A spin that does nothing still leaves the ladder standing where it was, so value accrues even through quiet stretches. One good tumble at the end of the run is multiplied by everything the round built before it.

Super Bonus

The Super Bonus removes the waiting. The global multiplier is live from the first spin: the first winning cascade sets it at 2x and each cascade after that doubles it, on the same ladder. Four bonus symbols is a harder ask than three, and the reward is skipping the part of the standard round where nothing is guaranteed.

Bonus Buy

A shopping cart in the corner of the interface opens a buy menu with four options. Each is priced as a multiple of the current stake:

• Chance Enhancer – 3x stake
• Guaranteed Compound X – 15x stake
• Bonus – 100x stake
• Super Bonus – 200x stake

The menu is arranged as a ladder of commitment. The Chance Enhancer nudges the odds without promising anything; Guaranteed Compound X puts the potion on the board for certain; the top two buy the rounds outright. The entry price is cheap precisely because it changes the least.

Our Honest Verdict

Overall Rating: 7.1/10

This is a waiting game dressed up as a chemistry experiment, and the waiting is the reason to choose it. Long stretches of the base game go nowhere much, the reels tumbling politely over while the cauldron sits there doing nothing. Then the potion lands, the ladder starts doubling, and everything before it turns out to have been the setup.

The best thing here is the carry-over in the bonus round, and it’s a real one: because the multiplier holds its value between spins, a run of dead spins still isn’t wasted time. The weakness is just as real. Everything the multiplier doesn’t touch pays almost nothing, so the game you actually play most of the time is thin.

It’s for players who enjoy nursing a build and can sit through a quiet spell without losing interest. If you want your wins to come from the symbols themselves, the flasks here will let you down. Al’s best work happens when he’s left alone with a reaction long enough to run.
