Birds in the City Slot Review
Two weathered utility poles, five sagging telephone wires, and a whole reel set strung across them above a sunlit city street. Birds in the City, from Betsoft, does something most cartoon slots don’t: it puts its biggest prize in the trigger rather than the round. Land four scatters and you’ve earned your free spins, but land Super Scatters among them and up to 45,000x the total bet is paid before the free spins have even started.
It plays on a 6×5 grid where identical symbols pay anywhere on screen, so there are no paylines to follow, just clusters of eight or more. The top prize is 45,000x the total bet, and the whole game is built around chasing it. Betsoft have been busy on this format lately, with Carnival Rush, Midnight Bandits and The VIP all in the same recent run.
Base Game & Features
Any win of eight or more matching symbols pays, wherever those symbols sit. Wins are counted, paid, and then cleared away. Four bird characters sit at the top of the paytable and five coloured eggs fill out the low end, with the red bird the clear premium at 50x for twelve or more.
The full symbol values, as multiples of the stake:
- Red Bird – 10x (8-9), 25x (10-11), 50x (12+)
- White Bird (goggles) – 2.5x, 10x, 25x
- Football Bird (blue helmet) – 2x, 5x, 15x
- Orange/Owl Bird – 1.5x, 2x, 13x
- Red Egg – 1x, 1.5x, 10x
- Purple Egg – 0.8x, 1.2x, 8x
- Orange Egg – 0.5x, 1x, 5x
- Green Egg – 0.4x, 0.9x, 4x
- Blue Egg – 0.25x, 0.75x, 2x
The step from the 8-9 band to the 10-11 band is where the paytable gets sharp, and it’s sharpest at the top. Symbol count matters more here than in most scatter-pays games: the tenth matching bird is worth dramatically more than the ninth.
Cascading Reels
Every winning combination triggers a cascade. The winning symbols are removed, except SCATTER and SUPER SCATTER symbols, and everything above drops down. New symbols fill the gaps from above.
Cascades keep running until no new win forms, and there’s no limit to how many can chain. Nothing pays until the whole sequence finishes, then all wins from the round are added together and awarded in one go. A cascade that keeps connecting can therefore grow both the symbol count and the total before anything is paid.
Multipliers
Multiplier symbols land on any reel during spins and cascades, in the base game and in Free Spins alike. Each one displays a value between 2x and 500x. They don’t apply on their own.
Once a round’s cascades finish, the values of every Multiplier on screen are summed and applied to that round’s total win. One 500x symbol is a good round. Three of them on a cascade chain is where this game’s biggest base-game results come from.
Mystery Symbols
Mystery symbols can appear during base game spins and cascades. Each one reveals a symbol underneath, which may form or contribute to a win. They don’t pay anything themselves and don’t trigger features, and they’re absent from Free Spins entirely.
Their value is quietly specific: because a reveal happens during a cascade sequence, a cluster of Mystery symbols can turn a dead drop into a new paying group, restarting the chain. It’s a base-game filler with real timing attached.
Birds in the City Free Spins & Bonus Features
Free Spins
Four or more SCATTER symbols of any kind, anywhere on the reels, award 15 free spins. The round works like the base game with one big difference: Multipliers accumulate instead of applying once.
When a Multiplier symbol appears on a winning spin, its value is added to a running TOTAL MULTIPLIER. Each new Multiplier that lands on a subsequent winning spin adds the running total to the values on screen and applies the lot to the win once cascades finish. Retriggers need just three or more SCATTERs, awarding five extra spins.
That accumulation changes the arithmetic of the round completely. A Multiplier that lands on spin two is still working for you on spin fourteen, so an early start to the TOTAL MULTIPLIER is worth far more than a late one. Every winning spin after it compounds the benefit.
Super Scatter Prize
Triggering Free Spins with at least one SUPER SCATTER in the combination pays an instant prize on top of the round. The ladder steps hard:
- 1 SUPER SCATTER – 100x total bet
- 2 SUPER SCATTERS – 500x total bet
- 3 SUPER SCATTERS – 5,000x total bet
- 4 SUPER SCATTERS – 45,000x total bet
Four Super Scatters in a single trigger is the top of what this game pays out, full stop. It’s also, by some distance, the least likely outcome on the sheet.
Bet Booster
Bet Booster is a toggle in the base game. Switched on, it doubles the chance of triggering Free Spins and increases the bet by 50%. It’s a clean enough exchange on paper.
Two strings attached. Buy Bonus is disabled while Bet Booster is running, and if Free Spins trigger mid-boost, the booster pauses until the round ends. Anyone who buys bonuses wants it off; anyone grinding triggers wants it on.
Bonus Buy
Two options sit behind the Buy Bonus button:
- 15 Free Spins – 200.00
- 15 Super Free Spins, all Multipliers 10x or higher – 1,000.00
The Super version is five times the price for a floor under every Multiplier. The ceiling doesn’t move: values still range up to 500x, so what’s bought is consistency, not upside.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
Playing Birds in the City means a lot of time watching birds land on wires, waiting for four scatters to show up at once. The set is charming enough that the waiting doesn’t sting, and the reason to choose it over plainer scatter-pays games is exactly that: the trigger itself carries a prize ladder, so a good scatter combination pays before the free spins have even started.
The Free Spins round is the best thing here. Multipliers accumulate rather than paying out and resetting, so the round builds tension spin by spin, and a retrigger at just three scatters can arrive exactly when the running total is worth compounding.
The base game is thinner than it first looks. Without Multipliers in play, most cascades end in egg-sized change, and the one mechanic that relieves it, Mystery symbols, disappears the moment the bonus starts.
It suits scatter-pays players who enjoy a slow build and don’t need constant action between bonuses. Anyone after quick, frequent rounds will find the wait between triggers long. For the patient type, the wires are worth perching on.
