Bison Moon: Thunder Charge Slot Review
A sunset valley of purple mountain ridges, dark pines and a pale river curling through the grass, all framed in glowing gold: Bison Moon: Thunder Charge dresses its prairie in the warmest light Northern Lights Gaming could paint. It’s a handsome front for an unusually mechanical build underneath.
Strip away the scenery and it’s a fairly traditional construct: a 5×3 grid with 25 fixed paylines, 96.05% RTP and high volatility, with stakes running from 0.20 to 20.00 per spin. There’s no stated maximum win for this one, which is unusual, but with a Grand Jackpot sitting at the top of the feature ladder the ceiling is clearly where the money lives.
The Moon symbols are what tie the whole game together, feeding a respin bonus, a multiplier bonus, a collector mechanic, a stampede randomiser and a jackpot wheel. If you know the studio’s Max Spinwell: Time Chronicles or Totally Reckless, you’ll know they like packing a lot of systems into one frame.
Base Game & Features
Wins pay left to right across the 25 fixed paylines, and only the highest combination per line counts on any spin. A 27.74% hit frequency means roughly one spin in four connects with something, which keeps the reels ticking over between feature triggers.
Symbols and Paytable
- Bison (red) – 2x for three, 5x for four, 25x for five
- Wolf – 1.2x for three, 2.5x for four, 15x for five
- Eagle – 1x for three, 2x for four, 10.5x for five
- Raccoon – 0.8x for three, 1.5x for four, 7.5x for five
- Fourth symbol – 4x for five
- Fifth symbol – 3x for five
- Sixth symbol – 2.5x for five
- Seventh symbol – 2x for five
The premium animals dominate the top of the table, with the bison worth a tidy 25x for five of a kind. Below the raccoon the pays drop off sharply, so line wins on their own won’t carry a session.
Wild Symbols
Wilds substitute for regular symbols only, with no multiplier attached, and they appear in the base game alone. They’re useful mostly for bridging gaps between the premium animals.
Moon Symbols
Red Moons appear in the base game and each one reveals a cash prize. Blue Moons appear in the Thunder Charge Bonus and carry the money through the feature. Every Red Moon that lands is also tallied by the Moon Collector, so the base game is quietly working even when it isn’t paying.
Bonus Features & Free Spins
- Thunder Charge Bonus – six or more Red Moons
- Stellar Moon Bonus – five Red Moons
- Moon Collector Bonus – Red Moon collection
- Bison Stampede – random, end of base game spin
- Lightning Eagle Jackpot – collect a Lightning Eagle on all five reels
Thunder Charge Bonus
Land six or more Red Moons and the Thunder Charge Bonus triggers, carrying the cash prizes from those Red Moons into the feature. Rows 1 and 6 start locked, with a Blue Moon holding the awarded prize on the reels.
You get three respins, and any symbol that lands resets the count to three. The respin reels contain only Blue Moons, Keys and blanks. Every new Blue Moon pays a Bison Moon Cash Prize that increases each time it’s awarded.
Two Keys unlock Row 1, and another two unlock Row 6. Blue Moons landing in locked rows don’t reveal their value until the row opens. Fill every position, locked rows included, and the Grand Jackpot pays out. The feature ends when the grid is full of Blue Moons or the respins run dry.
Stellar Moon Bonus
Land exactly five Red Moons and the Stellar Moon Bonus fires instead. All Moon cash prizes on the screen are awarded and multiplied by one of the following:
- X1, X2, X3, X4 or X5
- X10, X20 or X50
- X100, the top multiplier
It’s the quicker of the two Moon bonuses, resolved in a single multiplier draw rather than a respin sequence. Where that lands between X1 and X100 decides the whole payout.
Moon Collector Bonus
Every Red Moon that lands feeds the Moon Collector. When the collector triggers, it spawns additional Moon symbols onto the reels to trigger or boost either the Stellar Moon Bonus or the Thunder Charge Bonus.
It’s a bridge mechanic rather than a feature in its own right, working entirely in service of the two bonuses that pay.
Bison Stampede
At the end of any base game spin there’s a chance the Bison Stampede kicks in. Bisons charge across the reels to activate one of two bonuses:
- Wild Reels – wilds fill random reels and wins are awarded
- Thunder Charge Bonus – six or more Red Moons replace random symbols on the reels
The Stampede is available in the base game only, and it’s the one mechanic that can turn a spin with no Moons in sight into a full bonus trigger.
Lightning Eagle Jackpot
Lightning Eagle symbols collect into a bonus meter, and collecting one on all five reels triggers the Lightning Eagle Jackpot Wheel. The wheel has double rows, and each row awards one of five jackpots, a cash prize, or the Thunder Charge Bonus.
Cash prizes on the wheel are X5, X20, X50, X75 or X250. Five jackpots and a bonus entry sit on the same wheel, so the meter fills towards two different prizes at once.
Charged Bet
The Charged Bet adds extra Red Moon symbols to the reels, increasing the chance of triggering the Thunder Charge Bonus. It multiplies your current bet by X2.5, and doesn’t affect line wins or Moon symbol pays. It runs at 96.04% RTP, a hair under the standard game.
Buy Bonus
The Buy Feature offers two purchases:
- Thunder Charge Bonus – triggers the feature with a selection of Red Moons displaying random values, at 96.09% RTP
- Super Thunder Charge Bonus – the same feature with more Blue Moons landing during play, at 96.06% RTP
Both are bought at the price displayed at your current bet, and neither shifts the return by more than a hundredth of a percent. Some feature options may not be available above certain bet thresholds, and the Buy Feature is base game only.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.4/10
Playing this is mostly waiting. The prairie looks lovely and the Stampede shakes things up now and then, but you’re really here for one thing: the grid filling with Moons and the slow climb towards that Grand Jackpot. Anyone who enjoys a hold-and-respin build will feel at home within minutes.
The Thunder Charge Bonus is the strongest thing here by some distance, because the locked rows, Keys and rising Bison Moon Cash Prize give a real sense of progress rather than a single sudden payout. The weakness is everything around it: five separate systems stack up on a paytable that tops out at 25x, so the base game carries far more machinery than it can pay for.
That makes it a firm pick for jackpot chasers and respin fans, and an easy skip for anyone who wants the reels themselves to do the entertaining. Middling overall: brilliant at its centre, thin at the edges.
