Book Of Shadows Slot Review
Nolimit City is back with a haunting take on the innovative Book mechanic in Book of Shadows. Over a short period, these particular games have become increasingly popular, with providers creating their own versions against the critically acclaimed original.
Book of Shadows looks and sounds dramatic and terrifying from the minute you enter the darkness. Right off the bat, you’ll notice staple Nolimit City features and mechanics, while keeping that tried and tested formula we’ve come to love and appreciate.
Nolimit City have had a great run so far, living up to their reputation and successfully distributing a range of extremely volatile and highly entertaining games. Punk Rocker, Harlequin Carnival, & Golden Genie and the Walking Wilds took the iGaming industry by storm, but for now, Nolimit City are turning its attention to the darkest parts of its mindset.
With a fixed RTP of 96.01% and an extreme volatility rating, Book of Shadows portrays a sizable max win cap of 30,338x your bet. Will the darkness consume us, or will it reveal its true potential? Let’s spin the reels and find out!

Base Game & Features
Book of Shadows is the latest dark-themed slot from Nolimit City, consisting of 5 reels, 3-5 rows and 10-20 fixed pay lines. Wins are guaranteed when 2-5 identical symbols land from left to right, starting from reel 1.
The game includes 11 paytable symbols, with the Book Scatter doubling as a Wild on the reels. The highest-paying symbol falls to the Zombie Girl, followed by cats, skulls, insects, eyes, and jars, awarding payouts between 0.5x and 500x your bet.
Alternatively, low-paying symbols appear as A, K, Q, J, & 10 card suits on the reels. At the start of a session, the round begins with 3 active rows. Above these are a further 2 Shadow Rows, which can be activated for a fixed price per bet.
Having 4 rows active will increase the bet cost by 50%, while having all 5 rows active will double your current bet per spin. Depending on which option you choose, the theoretical RTP varies between 96.07% & 96.19%.

Lucky Locks & Gamble Mode
During gameplay, up to 4 reels can be locked with an adjusted bet per spin. This grants players the opportunity to connect winning combinations of a higher value throughout spins.
In addition, reels with available Book Scatters can also lock for a fixed price, allowing players to spin the reels to reveal the third Scatter needed to trigger Free Spins. Furthermore, players have the opportunity to gamble their current winnings for a chance to win more.
This is done through a special Card Suit Gamble, where players can choose between a Red or Black card, double or nothing. Please note that this gamble mode is limited to 5 attempts in a single session.
Gamble Wheel
In other areas, players have the option to gamble their current winnings for a chance to receive the Free Spins mode.
However, choosing to gamble and the round results in a loss will forfeit your winnings and return you to the base game, empty-handed. The gamble wheel is only available as long as the total win does not exceed 60x your bet.
Nolimit Booster & Bonus Buy
Players within permissible regions can purchase a variety of Nolimit Booster & Bonus Buy options as follows:
- 4 or 5 Shadow Rows: 1.5x and 2x your bet, respectively
- 3 Rows: Triggers the Free Spins mode with 3 active rows for 60x your bet
- 4 Rows: Triggers the Free Spins mode with 4 active rows for 90x your bet
- 5 Rows: Triggers the Free Spins mode with 5 active rows for 120x your bet
The theoretical RTP for each of the above modes falls between 96.20% & 96.43%.
The maximum win potential for Book of Shadows is 30,338x your bet. If a game round exceeds this, the current mode will end, and the player returns to the base game with the qualifying amount.

Book of Shadows Free Spins
Triggering the Free Spins mode requires 3 or more Book Scatters to land in the base game, awarding 10 Free Spins. The number of active Shadow Rows at the time of the trigger remains active throughout this mode.
At the start of the feature, a random paytable symbol is selected to become your Expanding symbol throughout spins. If you’re unhappy with the symbol awarded, you can shuffle again for free.
During Free Spins, when 2-3 instances of the expanding symbol appear on active rows, they will expand to fill the entire reel(s) on which they appear. Furthermore, 3 or more Book Scatters will award additional Free Spins.

Our Honest Verdict
Nolimit City have tapped into the darkest parts of their mind to create a devilishly good Book slot, which will undoubtedly stand out from the bulk. Nolimit City has recognised the success and popularity of the book mechanic and built upon the basics by utilising unique features and a rewarding maths model.
From the get-go, you’re in control of your game session through the game’s Shadow Rows function. It’s not unusual, but it is a rare occurrence to have this much manipulation of the game’s mechanics/features, yet we’re all for it.
Another interesting aspect of gameplay is the Lucky Locks feature, which gives players a certain level of power over their winning combinations and payouts. In addition, you may even lock the Book Scatter reels in favour of landing a third for Free Spins; however, each reel comes with a hefty price tag.
Regardless, the manipulation of the reels is engaging and will undoubtedly result in several strategies for players to rake in the best payout return. Still, we’re more for the Shadow Rows feature and what it means in terms of potential.
Our only dispute is that when 1 or both Shadow Rows are inactive, you have to witness which symbols appear upon them. If you’ve got 2 Book Scatters on active rows and 1 Book Scatter on a locked row, you’re going to be feeling pretty tilted right about now…
Lastly, Book of Shadows holds the key to a maximum win potential of 30,338x your bet. This, combined with an extreme volatility rating and a hit rate of 33.18% makes Book of Shadows a risky affair, but we feel it’s worth it.
All in all, Book of Shadows is a dark & mysterious offering from Nolimit City, operating many exciting features that give the book mechanic something it’s lacked for so long.
