Captain’s Curse

Captain’s Curse Slot Review

A derelict two-masted ship lies half-beached in turquoise surf, cabin windows still lit, while sunbeams punch through storm clouds behind the cliffs. Captain’s Curse looks like a plundering pirate game, but it’s built the opposite way: this is a slot about keeping what lands rather than taking it, and almost everything interesting in it happens when symbols stick to the reels instead of paying and disappearing.

Black Cat built it on a 5×3 grid with 20 fixed paylines, running at 94.0% RTP on high volatility, with stakes from 0.20 to 50. The wreck-and-cove artwork does the heavy lifting up front; the collecting loop underneath decides when any of it pays.

Base Game & Features

The base game plays out on those 20 fixed paylines, with wins formed left to right across the five reels. It’s a high volatility setup with a hit frequency of 22.32%, so roughly one spin in five returns something, and most of those returns will be small.

A wild lands on reels two, three, four and five only, substituting for everything except the scatter and the Cash Symbols, and it isn’t available at all once the free spins are running. The scatter has no pay value of its own; its whole job is triggering the bonus.

Between the wild, the scatter and the Cash Symbols, that’s the full cast of special symbols. Everything else is standard line-pay material, and on a grid this size the royals and theme symbols do most of the day-to-day winning – small wins, spaced out, while the collecting features decide when the game pays properly.

Cash Symbols

Cash Symbols can land anywhere on the reels, but the game is strict about how many of them you’ll see. Only one can appear per reel, for a maximum of 5 on a single spin. Each carries a prize drawn from three possible values:

• 1x the total bet
• 5x the total bet
• 10x the total bet

That 10x prize is the ceiling on any single Cash Symbol. Five of the best ones on one spin is worth 50x the bet, which sets the scale of what the collecting features are chasing.

On their own, landing Cash Symbols in the base game doesn’t trigger anything unless three or more arrive together. They’re feedstock for the Prize Collection feature below, and the count matters more than the values.

Prize Collection

Land 3 to 5 Cash Symbols in view and the Prize Collection feature fires. It’s a hold-and-spin round, and it’s the engine of the whole game:

• The feature starts with 3 Collection Spins
• Cash Symbols that land are held in place until the feature finishes
• Collection Spins reset to 3 every time any Cash Symbol lands
• Held prizes are collected instantly
• The round ends when all Collection Spins are used, or when 15 Cash Symbols have been collected

The reset rule is what gives the round legs. Every Cash Symbol that lands buys three more spins, so a lucky streak can keep the feature breathing for a long while. It can trigger in the base game and during free spins alike.

The step-by-step runs like this. The triggering symbols lock where they landed, the Collection Spins counter appears, and each spin either adds to the board or burns one of the three remaining attempts. Any hold resets that counter straight back to 3, so a round only dies on three consecutive empty spins.

Fill the board with all fifteen and the round pays out its ceiling of held prizes.

Captain’s Curse Free Spins & Bonus Features

Free Spins

3, 4 or 5 scatter symbols landing in view trigger the free spins, and the round is built to feed the Prize Collection feature:

• 3 scatters award 10 free spins
• 4 scatters award 12 free spins
• 5 scatters award 15 free spins

The round plays at the bet of the triggering spin, and the number of Cash Symbols on the reels is increased for its duration. A multiplier is randomly awarded at the start, drawn from four values:

• 2x
• 5x
• 10x
• 20x

The multiplier is fixed for the whole round – you don’t roll it again, and there’s no way to upgrade it mid-feature. Whatever the start awards, 2x or 20x, is what the meter gets at the end.

Prize Collection can trigger inside the free spins. When it does, the free spins pause, the collecting round plays out with the free spins’ extra Cash Symbols still in play, and the free spins resume once it ends. Every prize collected along the way feeds a prize meter.

There’s no retriggering, and 15 is the hard cap on the spin count. The round runs to its final spin, whatever it is, and at the end the awarded multiplier is applied to the total prize meter. That closing multiplication is the whole shape of the bonus: a full meter and a 20x multiplier is what every free spins round here is angling for.

Buy A Bonus

The free spins can be bought outright, at a single flat price and your chosen bet size:

• 150x total bet – triggers the free spins with 3, 4 or 5 scatters landing, awarding 10, 12 or 15 spins

The buy doesn’t let you pick the scatter count. You pay 150x and take whatever lands, which means the spin count is a second gamble stacked on top of the price. Bet big before buying, because the feature plays at the stake you set.

Our Honest Verdict

Overall Rating: 6.3/10

Playing Captain’s Curse is mostly waiting for something to stick. The wreck-and-cove artwork is lovely, but the reason to sit down at this one is the hold-and-collect loop, and the free spins version of it is the best room in the wreck: extra Cash Symbols on the reels, prizes banking to a meter as the round runs, and a multiplier of up to 20x landing on the lot at the end.

The letdown is what goes into that meter. Each Cash Symbol tops out at 10x the bet, so the numbers climb slowly and the base game between rounds runs thin, at an RTP that gives nothing back on top.

For players who like a long, patient build and a finish that pays for all of it at once, this collecting loop is well made and worth the wait. Anyone after frequent small hits will find the cove quiet.
