Witches rarely work alone. The four in Coven Rising each keep to their own colour and their own corner of the spellbook, and Pragmatic Play have built the game around which of them turns up.
The board they turn up on is the odd part. Coven Rising runs nine reels of uneven height, 1-4-7-6-7-6-7-4-1 from one edge to the other, paying in clusters rather than on lines.
RTP is 96.42% in the default configuration, though operators can run the game on lower settings. Volatility is Medium, the ceiling is 5,000x, and stakes run from 0.20 to 240 a spin.
Cluster Pays is well-trodden ground for the studio. Gems Bonanza and Fruit Party both got there long before this one did.
The witchcraft, meanwhile, puts it in the same room as Madame Destiny. What none of those has is this grid, so the question worth answering is whether a board shaped like that does anything beyond looking different.
Base Game & Features
The grid takes a minute to read. Nine reels sit side by side in a 1-4-7-6-7-6-7-4-1 arrangement, one symbol high at each edge and seven at the widest points, which loads most of the board into the middle.
Clusters pay when five or more matching symbols connect horizontally, vertically or diagonally. Diagonal connections do a lot of the work on a board this shape.
Hit frequency is listed at 1 in 2.83.
Symbol Levels and Respins
Every paying symbol carries a level. Symbols start at Level 1 and can climb as far as Level 5, with each step raising what that symbol is worth. Levels can rise during spins, respins and features.
When a cluster pays, the symbols inside it respin in place and new symbols drop into those same positions. One cluster can develop into a second and a third without a fresh spin.
Positions holding nothing show as Blank symbols, which pay nothing and block clusters until something converts them.
Coin Symbols
Coins land at random and take a fixed value from a set list: 1x, 2x, 3x, 4x, 5x, 10x, 15x, 20x, 25x, 50x, 100x, 250x or 500x the base bet. They sit on the board waiting to be collected rather than paying on their own.
Wild Symbols
Wilds substitute for all paying symbols. They won’t stand in for Scatters, Coins or any of the Witches.
The Four Witches
The middle position of the grid is where the Witches appear. Four of them hit at random, each in a normal or an upgraded version:
- Green Witch: collects every Coin value on screen and pays it out, with the collected Coins respinning into random paying symbols. Upgraded, she first adds one to five extra Coins with random values onto positions covered by Blanks.
- Red Witch: raises a random paying symbol to the next level, applying to the current result and to whatever respins afterwards. Upgraded, she raises every paying symbol by one level.
- Yellow Witch: turns up to five Blank symbols into random symbols, where enough Blanks are available. Upgraded, every Blank on screen transforms.
- Blue Witch: turns the middle position Wild. Upgraded, she does that and adds two more Wilds at random positions.
Coven Rising Free Spins
Scatter symbols open the round. Three or four of them award 12 free spins, five award 20 and six award 24. Free Spins are listed as hitting once in every 336.51 spins.
Special reels are in play for the duration, and all four Witches remain available with their upgraded versions. Landing two or more Scatters during the round retriggers it, adding two extra free spins for each Scatter.
Two of the Witches behave differently inside the feature. Red Witch level increases persist until the end of the round rather than lapsing after the next respin.
Green Witch, after collecting, also gathers the total onto the highest-value Coin on screen. That Coin stays put until it’s collected or a higher-value Coin replaces it.
Super Free Spins
Super Free Spins is a premium version of the round, reachable only through the buy menu. Blank symbols can’t hit the middle position of the grid, so the spot the Witches arrive on is never dead.
Bonus Buy & Ante Bet
Both versions of the feature can be bought outright, and the Ante Bet shortens the odds of reaching one the long way round.

Our Honest Verdict

The base game keeps itself busy. Clusters land often enough and winning symbols respin where they sit, with usually a Coin or a Witch worth watching in the middle of the board.
The Witches are the reason to come back, and Red is the pick of the four. Her level increases hold for the rest of a feature, and the upgraded version raising every paying symbol a level was the strongest thing we saw all session. Green runs her close when the board is already littered with Coins. Yellow and Blue are useful rather than exciting.
Super Free Spins plays better than the standard round, since the centre can’t blank out and the Witches always have somewhere to land. It isn’t twice the game, though, and that’s what the price asks you to believe. On repeat visits we’d take the cheaper buy.
It’s a slot for cluster players who enjoy tracking a board that keeps changing. Anyone hunting five-figure ceilings will find the 5,000x cap thin. As covens go, this one’s worth joining for two of its members.
