Dead Man’s Broadside Slot Review
A storm lashes the deck of a ghost ship, a skeletal captain in a tricorn hat raises a hand burning with green fire, and a black cannon with a skull on its barrel waits in the fo’c’sle. Dead Man’s Broadside buries almost all of its payout in one place: the base combinations pay pennies, and everything hinges on whether the multiplied tiles arrive and stay.
Backseat Gaming built this one, and pirates have paid well for the studio before in Pirate Bonanza 2, with darker fare like Infernus and Blade Master also in the locker. It runs on a 6×5 grid where wins need eight or more matching symbols anywhere on the board, at 96.01% RTP with very high volatility, a hit rate of 18.49%, and a 15,000x maximum win.
The multiplier zones are where that ceiling lives, and everything else on the ship is built to serve them.
Matching Eight Symbols Anywhere
There are no paylines here. Wins are awarded by matching at least eight symbols anywhere on the board, cluster-style, and tumbles clear winning symbols away so new ones can drop in.
That tumble matters more than it sounds. Each cleared symbol drops a fresh one from above, so a single spin can chain several wins in a row, and the Multiplier Zone and Wild Block symbols are destroyed alongside the first winning tumble.
The paytable scales with the current bet, and every value below is a multiple of the total bet. The premiums pay in three tiers:
- Pirate Captain (skull with hat): 10x for 8, 25x for 9-10, 50x for 11-15
- Crossed pistols: 2.5x for 8, 10x for 9-10, 20x for 11-15
- Skull medallion: 1.5x for 8, 2x for 9-10, 10x for 11-15
- Sword: 1.5x for 8, 2x for 9-10, 10x for 11-15
The gems pay per symbol count instead, stepping up with every extra match:
- Red gem: 0.2x for 8, 0.3x for 9, 0.5x for 10, 1x for 11, 1.5x for 12, 2x for 13, 2.5x for 14, 3x for 15
- Orange gem: 0.25x for 8, 0.4x for 9, 0.5x for 10, 0.75x for 11, 1x for 12, 1.5x for 13, 2x for 14, 2.5x for 15
- Blue gem: 0.1x for 8, 0.2x for 9, 0.3x for 10, 0.5x for 11, 0.75x for 12, 1x for 13, 1.5x for 14, 2x for 15
- Green gem: same values as the blue gem
- Purple gem: same values as the blue gem
That’s a steep drop from the captain to the gems. The low end pays a tenth of the stake for eight-of-a-kind, and even a full fifteen-strong gem cluster tops out at 3x the bet. Only the premiums clear 10x, and only the captain clears 20x, which tells you where the real money is meant to come from: the special symbols, not the base combinations.
Multiplier Zones
The Multiplier Zone symbol can land in all game modes, and when it does it stamps a zone of multiplied tiles onto the grid. Zones come in four sizes:
- 2×2
- 3×3
- 4×4
- 6×5, covering the entire board
Every tile in a zone receives the same random multiplier, drawn from a ladder that climbs steeply:
- 2x, 4x, 8x, 16x, 32x
- 64x, 128x, 256x, 512x
- 1024x
When a symbol sitting in a Multiplier Zone tile takes part in a win, its multiplier applies to the payout. If several zoned symbols join the same win, their multipliers are summed and the total applies. The symbols only need to touch the zone; the zone doesn’t have to hold the whole cluster.
Overlapping zones behave the same way. The shared tiles receive the sum of all the multipliers covering them, so a tile caught by two zones carries both values at once, and a big win passing through that tile gets the combined figure applied.
Two persistence rules do the heavy lifting. Zones last for the entire duration of the bonus games, so a long round keeps its multipliers and stacks new ones on top.
The symbol itself is destroyed alongside the first winning tumble, but the zone it created stays behind. Landing more zone symbols later in a round doesn’t replace what’s already there; it adds to it, and the overlaps pay the sums.
Wild Blocks and Upgrades
The Wild Block symbol can land in all game modes, but only one at a time per tumble. It creates a 2×2 Wild Block anywhere on the grid, substituting for the paying symbols.
In the bonus games it’s guaranteed to take part in a winning connection, and it connects with all paying symbols at once, which makes it the most reliable win-maker on the ship. Like the Multiplier Zone symbol, it’s destroyed alongside the first winning tumble.
The Upgrade symbol is simpler and lands in all game modes too. It picks one random low paying symbol type on the grid and transforms every symbol of that type into the same high paying symbol, and the Upgrade symbol itself becomes that high symbol as well.
The conversion works on whatever is already on the board. A grid holding nine green gems becomes nine captains, worth 25x for the count, and if any of those tiles sit in a zone the multiplier rides along with them. On a board already holding eight or more gems, one Upgrade can hand you the captain’s 50x tier for nothing.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
Most of your time on this ship is spent waiting. The base game pays crumbs, wins come on fewer than one in five spins, and the only reason to sit through it is the shot at a bonus where the zones stick around and stack.
When that bonus comes, it’s superbly built for it: overlapping zones sum their multipliers, everything survives to the end of the round, and the guaranteed wild means every spin has a pulse. The weakness is the stretch between. Nothing in the base game pays enough to matter, so the game is only ever as good as its last trigger.
It’s for the patient kind of player, the sort who’ll happily take a long, quiet stretch of deck-scrubbing for one good storm. Anyone chasing steady wins won’t find them here, and the captain’s skeleton crew has nothing to offer them.
