Double Joker 20 Slot Review
Tiled card suits on deep purple, a gold-trimmed frame around the reels, tiny jester crowns perched on the title lettering: Amatic‘s Double Joker 20 arrives dressed as a classic fruit machine, and that’s exactly what it is. What it does with the costume is the interesting part. This is a game that spends everything on its middle three reels, and the two wild jokers living there earn more than a dozen bonus rounds would.
It runs on a 5×3 grid with 20 fixed paylines and an RTP of 97.08%, comfortably above the industry average. Stakes run from 20 to 1000 per spin. It sits in Amatic’s joker family alongside Fortune Joker 10 and Fortune Joker 20, with Mr Magic another of the studio’s fruit-styled efforts. Everything here is built on wild reels rather than bonus rounds.
Reels, Lines and the Paytable
The setup is five reels, three rows and 20 fixed lines. Line wins pay leftmost to right on adjacent reels, only the highest line win counts on each line, and wins from different lines are added together. Symbols also arrive stacked, so a single spin can fill a whole reel with the same symbol.
That stacking is what gives the wild reels something meaty to work with. The Joker stands in for every symbol except the scatters, but it has a section of its own below. Beyond it, the paying symbols are pure fruit-machine stock, and the values below are multiples of the total bet:
- Seven: 0.5x for two, 10x for four, 150x for five
- Horseshoe / Watermelon: 2x for three, 5x for four, 25x for five
- Grapes: 1x for three, 2.5x for four, 10x for five
- Mixed Fruit: 0.5x for three, 1.5x for four, 5x for five
- Bell scatter: 3x for three, 20x for four, 100x for five
- Star scatter: 20x for three
The paytable has a clear shape. The Seven is the only symbol that pays for just two of a kind, which matters on a game with stacked reels, because a pair of sevens on the first two reels is a real possibility on any spin. The Horseshoe and Watermelon share identical values.
Line wins themselves are multiples of the line bet, while the scatter values above are multiples of the total bet, which is a distinction worth holding onto when comparing rows. Payouts are only made when the specified number of a symbol lands, and the paytable values move automatically with the bet level, so the multiples hold at any stake.
The Two Scatters
The two scatters behave differently from the rest, and each has its own rules:
- The Bell pays on any position, with no reel restrictions
- The Star pays on any position, but appears only on reels 1, 3 and 5
- Scatter wins are multiples of the total bet, not the line bet
- Only the highest scatter combination pays
- Scatter wins are added on top of line wins
The Bell is the steadier of the two, paying at three denominations and topping out at 100x the total bet for five. The Star is more awkward: it can only occupy reels 1, 3 and 5, so three is both the minimum and the maximum you’ll ever see of it, and the reward for corralling all three is a flat 20x the total bet.
Neither scatter triggers a feature. They’re pure pay symbols, which tells you a lot about how this game is put together: every pound of excitement is spent on the middle three reels.
Joker Expanding Wild
The Joker appears only on reels 2, 3 and 4, and it’s the game’s main event. When it lands on a reel, every symbol on that reel turns wild, so a single Joker can put three wilds into play at once.
Because those wilds substitute for everything except the scatters, an expansion on reel 2 or 4 can complete line wins across the whole grid. Land Jokers on two of the three middle reels in the same spin and most of the board is wild. It’s a simple idea, and on a 20-line game it’s a productive one.
The expansion also interacts with the stacked symbols. A reel full of wilds next to a reel stacked with sevens is where the 150x five-of-a-kind starts looking reachable, since the wilds stand in for whatever the line needs.
The same applies further down the table. A wild reel beside stacked watermelons or grapes turns a modest grouping into a full line, and the middle reels expanding is what converts the paytable’s quiet lower half into regular small returns.
Golden Joker Multiplier Wild
The Golden Joker is the rarer of the two court cards. It appears only on reel 3, and it works the same way as the standard Joker with a bonus attached. In order:
- The Golden Joker lands on reel 3
- All symbols on that reel turn wild
- A multiplier of x2, x3 or x5 is randomly selected
- Every winning combination on the spin is multiplied by it
With the middle reel entirely wild and every win multiplied, a Golden Joker landing alongside a decent spread of symbols is where this game pays its biggest compliments. The multiplier applies to all winning combinations, not just those passing through reel 3, so line wins on the outer reels benefit too.
Both jokers can contribute to the same spin, which is the combination the title is really pointing at. A Joker on reel 2 or 4 alongside the Golden Joker in the middle leaves two-fifths of the grid wild, with the multiplier applied across whatever those wilds complete. That’s the ceiling of what Double Joker 20 offers, and as a single mechanic it carries the game.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7/10
For long stretches this is plain fruit-machine business: stacked symbols, modest line wins, the odd scatter. What makes it worth sitting through is the middle of the grid. When a Joker turns a full reel wild, or the Golden Joker does the same and straps a multiplier across every win, the game becomes briefly much bigger than its paytable looks. Those two court cards are the reason to choose it.
Their doubling-up is also its biggest strength. Two wild symbols on a 20-line grid with stacked reels do more work than a long list of side features would, and both are live in the base game rather than gated behind a trigger. The weakness is what surrounds them: there’s no bonus round, no free spins, nothing to wait for beyond the next joker, so longer sessions can run thin.
It suits players who like their fruit slots quick and free of ornament, and the maths is unusually kind for the genre. Feature-first players will find it thin. Everyone else gets a classic machine that knows exactly what it is, dressed in purple and gold and smiling all the way down its three middle reels.
