Explode the Toad Megaways Slot Review
A fat orange toad sits on a chrome pedestal in a neon laboratory, pink spots and heavy eyelids and all, while a mechanical rig clamps the top reel strip like it’s holding the specimen down. Barstruck‘s Explode the Toad Megaways is a slot that pays you twice for the same spin: once in the wins, and again in the wilds those wins bank towards a jackpot draw.
Beneath the candy-coloured render there’s a disciplined engine: six reels with up to seven rows, 117,649 ways to win, a 95.98% RTP and medium volatility, with stakes from 0.10 to 20.00. A top reel feeds the grid, cascades that won’t sit still, and a jackpot draw charging off the wilds you collect along the way. Whether that contraption pays for itself is the question the toad is sitting on.
Base Game & Features
This is a ways game, not a payline one. Wins start on the leftmost reel and pay left to right across adjacent reels, in any row position. Each spin can carry up to 117,649 ways, depending on how many symbols land per reel.
Only the highest winning combination is awarded per symbol combination, and if several winning combinations land on a single way, only the best of them counts. Ways wins are multiplied by the bet multiplier. The total payout for a spin is the sum of all way wins and scatter wins combined, with the paytable values scaled to your current bet.
Extra Reel
The Extra Reel is a strip of symbols sitting above the main grid, clamped by that green mechanical arm, and it adds one extra symbol to each of reels two, three, four and five. It changes every spin, and it’s the only place two of the game’s important symbols ever show up.
On a full grid the reel set runs to six reels by up to seven rows, with each reel alone or with its Extra Reel position carrying up to seven symbols. That top strip is what turns a six-reel game into one that can touch the full 117,649 ways.
Rolling Reels
Winning symbols are removed after a win and new symbols drop in to replace them, which is the Rolling Reels mechanic, and it’s active in both the base game and Free Spins. One spin can chain several consecutive wins this way, each one built from whatever falls into the gaps. The reels only settle once a roll produces no new win.
Each roll is a fresh evaluation of the grid. Wins formed from the dropped-in symbols pay exactly as the first ones did, and a chain keeps rolling until a refresh comes back empty. The length of a run is never guaranteed by anything that came before it.
The wild appears only on the Extra Reel and substitutes for everything except the scatter. That’s the whole allowance it gets, but its position matters more than it sounds: wilds collected during Rolling Reels play are what charge the jackpot draw.
Symbols and Pays
The paytable is gemstones over royals, with a crystal clear of the rest. Values are multiples of stake:
- Pink Crystal: 2x for two, 5x for three, 10x for four, 25x for five, 50x for six
- Yellow/Green Diamond (large): 1x, 2x, 2.5x, 7.5x for three to six
- Green Diamond (outline): 0.3x, 1x, 1.5x, 2x for three to six
- Blue Diamond: 0.3x, 0.6x, 0.8x, 2x for three to six
- A, K: 0.2x, 0.4x, 0.6x, 1.8x for three to six
- Green Speech Bubble: 0.2x, 0.3x, 0.6x, 1x for three to six
- Purple J-shape: 0.1x, 0.3x, 0.5x, 1x for three to six
- 10: 0.1x, 0.2x, 0.5x, 0.9x for three to six
- 9: 0.1x, 0.2x, 0.4x, 0.8x for three to six
The top crystal is the only symbol that pays for a two-of-a-kind, which on a ways game with six reels is a genuinely small club.
Autoplay is available in the base game only, running a chosen number of spins at the stake you set, with the remaining count displayed in the game. The session ends when those spins have played out. Quickspin and a manual stop button sit alongside it, and neither affects the results of a spin.
Explode the Toad Megaways Free Spins & Jackpots
Free Spins
Four scatter symbols award 12 free spins. Every extra scatter beyond four adds five more, so a six-scatter trigger opens on 22. Bets stay at the triggering spin’s level throughout.
During the round, scatters appear only on the Extra Reel, and three or four of them award an additional five or ten spins respectively. The multiplier does the heavy lifting here: it starts at 1 and climbs by one after every roll of the Rolling Reels, so a long cascade chain pays progressively more as it goes. A retrigger mid-cascade keeps the ladder standing.
Jackpot Pick Game
Every spin, wilds landed during Rolling Reels play are collected, and once the reels settle the Jackpot Pick Game has a chance to trigger. The more wilds collected, the better the odds. It can fire in the base game and in Free Spins alike, so no spin is fully dead while cascades are still running.
Twelve tokens are laid out facedown, each tied to one of four jackpots: Mega, Major, Minor or Mini. You pick them one at a time to reveal the jackpot behind each. The first jackpot matched by three tokens is the one awarded, the feature ends there, and the win is multiplied by total bet.
Because every token hides one of the same four names, the round can’t run long – three matches arrive within ten picks at the latest. What you walk away with was fixed before the first token turned over.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.1/10
You come to this one for the same reason the toad sits on that pedestal: it’s built to be watched while something builds. Every cascade banks wilds, and every banked wild nudges the jackpot draw closer. Even a losing spin feels like it moved something.
Free spins carry the game, because a multiplier that climbs with every roll rewards exactly the thing cascades do best: running long. The weakness is the other end of the ladder. Almost everything below the top crystal pays pocket change, so the game leans hard on the jackpots for a ceiling, and the pick game itself is a presentation layer over a result fixed before your first token.
It’s one for players who enjoy the slow build and don’t need every session to end in fireworks – the patient crowd, not the ones chasing one big number. If modest, frequent progress sounds like a good evening rather than a wasted one, the toad will keep you company. Anyone after a single headline payout should look elsewhere.
