The Base Game and Features
Frozen Gems Slot is relatively simple to understand, further enforcing that chilled out vibe, but it does have a couple of intricate little features that make things a bit more interesting.
To start with the basics, Frozen Gems utilises a ways to win mechanic, and to form a win you’ll need to match at least 3 symbols on consecutive reels starting from the left-most reel.
Winning symbols will explode, leaving a space for new symbols to fall in via an avalanche, potentially creating more winning combinations. Frozen Gems also has a multiplier feature.
Every new spin will start at 1x, and each subsequent win will increase the multiplier by +1.
Frozen Gems Slot starts every new spin with 243 ways to win, but this can be increased thanks to the Splitting Scatters Feature.
Splitting Scatters
The name is a little bit confusing, as the splitting scatters don’t refer to the conventional type of scatter that you might be accustomed to which triggers the Casino Bonus.
In Frozen Gems Slot, this instead refers to the symbols above the reels which will display either ‘W’ for wild or X2 and X3 Symbols.
These boxes will be frozen and you’ll need to unlock them, and to do so you’ll need to clear symbols from the reel beneath the box. 3 winning symbols are needed to unlock the box, and once they’ve unlocked you’ll benefit from their features.
- Wild – Transform all symbols on the reel to Wild
- X2 – Splits all symbols on the reel into 2, increasing the ways to win

It’s thanks to this feature that the game is capable of reaching up to 8,748 ways to win, but naturally doing so will be difficult, especially for the reels on the right.
Another way to clear one of the 3 ‘hits’ needed to unlock the feature is with your conventional Scatter Symbol. This will be collected, and its space will be cleared allowing for a new symbol to fall into its place.
Collecting 3 Scatter symbols will trigger the Frozen Spins. The collection of Scatters is only valid for the current Spin, and any collected will not carry over onto your next spin.
This feature is probably the most confusing, because it’s very easy to mistake the X2 and X3 frozen symbols for multipliers.
Splitting them is definitely your best chance at getting big wins, but unfortunately all too often they’ll split, but no winning combinations are present, leaving you feeling a little bit dejected.
Frozen Spins
3 Scatters will trigger the Frozen Spins, and award a payout of 5x. All subsequent scatters that land will award an additional 4x.
Whatever multiplier you hit with in the Base Game will carry over, where it will continue to progressively build. 9 Free Spins are given in this bonus to start with, but landing a Scatter symbol will award an extra spin. The number of Free Spins and the Multiplier are unlimited.
Our Verdict
While the game can be entertaining, things can soon change and Frozen Gems Slot can turn into something mind numbingly boring.
The problem we found playing the game in demo, is that it seemed pretty difficult to land the Scatter Symbols needed for the bonus, and the Splitting Symbols more often than not brought nothing to the table.
That’s not to say that Frozen Gems Slot can’t go off though, you can definitely start to understand as you play it how good it could get, but you’ll need to unlock multiple of the Splitting Scatter reels.
Wilds to make those connections, and a nice multiplier to amplify your wins. A bit boring really, which is sad considering some of the greats that Play’n GO have produced in the past.
One thing that is worth mentioning, is that the max win is significantly higher than you might usually see from a Play’n GO game, with the potential to win up to 10,000x, but again, you’ll need a bit of magic to reach anywhere near it.
