Golden Elk Slot Review
Fireflies drift through a teal haze over a worn stone path, mushrooms glowing on either side and mossy trunks closing in behind the reels. It’s one of the handsomer woodland grids you’ll spin, and nearly everything it pays on the walk through is pocket change: the whole game hangs on one six-symbol trigger and the jackpot ladder waiting behind it.
Under the vines, Wizard Games have built Golden Elk as a straightforward 5×3 slot with 50 winning lines, a 96.25% RTP and mid-to-high volatility. It shares stable space with Surtr’s Fury and Triple Blitz 7s. The elk itself is the animal to watch here, and the forest is worth the walk provided the prizes keep pace with the paintwork.
Symbols and Pays
Wins pay when matching symbols land on adjacent reels from the far left. With 50 lines in play, that’s a conventional fixed-line setup: no ways mechanic, no cluster pays, just left-to-right runs across the five reels.
The cast is made up of forest animals at the top and card royals at the bottom. Fox, Rabbit, Squirrel, Owl and Butterfly fill the premium end, with A, K, Q and J propping up the low pays. Every animal has its own three-step pay run, and the royals all share a single set of values.
All values below are multiples of the total bet, not the line bet, which matters on a 50-line game: a five-of-a-kind Fox at a 2.40 stake returns 24.00 rather than a fiftieth of that.
- Fox: 0.3x, 2x and 10x for three, four and five
- Rabbit: 0.1x, 1x and 5x
- Squirrel: 0.1x, 0.5x and 3x
- Owl and Butterfly: 0.1x, 0.5x and 2x
- A, K, Q and J: 0.1x, 0.2x and 1x
- Scatter (golden tree): 1x, 5x and 10x
That’s a thin ladder. The Fox tops out at 10x the total bet for five of a kind, and the royals pay a tenth of that, so the base reels exist mostly to deliver Scatters and elk rather than wins of their own.
The gaps between tiers tell the same story. Three of a kind pays the same 0.1x for every symbol except the Fox, and it’s only at the four- and five-symbol runs that the animals pull away from the royals. A four-Fox line at 2x is worth ten four-of-a-kind royal lines.
Wild and Scatter
The Wild stands in for every symbol except the Scatter and one further gold icon, doing the usual substituting work, and several Wilds can appear together on the reels at once. Because it covers the animals and the royals alike, a well-placed Wild turns near-miss runs into paid lines at the lower end of the ladder more often than at the top.
The Scatter is a golden tree, and it’s a paying symbol in its own right: three of them return the full stake, five return 10x it. Three is also the trigger count for the Free Spins, so a scatter win always comes with the round attached.
The Elk Symbol
The Elk doesn’t sit in the paytable at all. It’s a Bonus symbol, and it can land stacked a full reel deep, which is how a six-symbol trigger becomes reachable on a 5×3 grid rather than a near-impossibility.
Six or more of them anywhere in view starts the Bonus feature. Fewer than six pays nothing, so a stack that stops short is just decoration. The count is what matters, not where they land: six spread one per reel counts exactly the same as a full stack plus a straggler.
Free Spins
Three or more golden trees trigger the Free Spins, and up to 30 free games are awarded. That’s a generous ceiling for a three-scatter trigger, and the round doesn’t ask for anything more than the same symbols you’re already watching for.
The round keeps the base game’s reels, symbols and paytable, so wins inside it look exactly like wins outside it. What gives it teeth is the crossover: the Elk Bonus can also trigger during the Free Spins, so a single good scatter sequence can deliver both features in one go.
That crossover is doing a lot of work in a game this size. The free games alone won’t produce much on a paytable capped at 10x, but every spin inside the round is also a chance to land six elk and jump across to the jackpot mini-game.
Stacked elk make that more than a pipe dream inside the round. A full column on one reel is three of the six needed at a stroke, and the remaining three can arrive anywhere across the other four reels.
The Elk Bonus
Land six or more Elk symbols and the Bonus feature begins. The round opens with three spins of a mini-game that awards multipliers and jackpots, and it can also arrive inside the Free Spins, stacking on top of the free games already in progress.
Three jackpots ride above the reels, and they scale with the stake rather than sitting at fixed amounts. At a 2.40 stake they read:
- GRAND: 4,800
- MAJOR: 240
- MINOR: 48
Halve the bet and the prizes halve with it, so the ladder is best read as proportions of stake rather than amounts. In those proportions, the MINOR pays twice what a five-Fox line returns, the MAJOR is five times the MINOR, and the GRAND is twenty times the MAJOR, which puts the top prize in a different league from everything else on screen.
Those three prizes are the game’s real destination, and everything on the reels points towards them. The multipliers awarded inside the mini-game sit alongside the ladder rather than replacing it, so a single round can pay out on more than one level.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7/10
Golden Elk is mostly a waiting game. The forest is gorgeous and the animals pay barely anything, so the reason to be here at all is the elk themselves: six of them open a jackpot mini-game that can also arrive inside the Free Spins. Everything else is scenery on the way to that.
The strength is how completely the game commits to that single idea. Both features feed the same ladder, and one good scatter run can stack them back to back, which is a more decisive payoff than most five-reel woodland slots ever manage. The weakness is the stretch in between: a paytable that tops out at 10x means long spells where a win barely covers the spin, and the mid-to-high volatility makes those spells honest.
It suits players who enjoy a slow walk and one big moment at the end of it, and the forest stays handsome enough that the walk never turns into a slog. Chasers of regular mid-sized hits to keep the balance moving won’t find them here; the elk keeps its treasures, and its distance.
