Ivan The Immortal King

Ivan the Immortal King Slot Review

Quickspin‘s Ivan the Immortal King draws players into a world shaped by Russian folklore, where the ancient tale of Ivan Tsarevitch and the Gray Wolf comes alive on the reels. Released in December 2018, this game stands apart from the developer’s wider portfolio with its ambitious feature set and uncompromising volatility. The title captures the essence of a classic fairytale whilst delivering modern slot mechanics that reward patience and bankroll strength. For those seeking an experience that prioritises storytelling alongside competitive win potential, this is a genuine standout.

Base Game & Features

Ivan the Immortal King operates on a classic 5×3 grid with 20 fixed paylines, providing a familiar structure that allows the feature set to take centre stage. The reel layout feels intuitive despite the complexity of what’s happening beneath the surface. Minimum betting starts at £0.20 , though the true flexibility comes from the upper range, which caters to diverse bankroll sizes. The game’s mechanical foundation proves solid and straightforward, letting players focus entirely on the rich feature mechanics rather than learning unintuitive win systems.

Symbol composition draws directly from Russian folklore. The Wild symbol dominates the pay table as the highest-paying non-feature symbol, delivering up to 2,000x your bet for five across the reels. Young Ivan himself matches this payout, standing as the game’s premium paying symbol. Below these sit the classical characters: Koschei, the Princess, Wolf, and Dragon–each representing different tiers of value–alongside coloured gems filling out the lower-value positions. This carefully crafted symbol set reinforces the thematic narrative whilst maintaining clear visual hierarchy that players can digest instantly.

Special Symbols and the Baba Yaga Mystery Feature

What truly distinguishes Ivan the Immortal King is the Baba Yaga Mystery feature, a randomised mechanic that can trigger during both base game and free spins. When Baba Yaga appears, she deposits identical symbols onto the reels in strategic positions, creating opportunities to progress up the multiplier ladder or complete winning combinations that wouldn’t otherwise land. This mechanic transforms what could be a dry base game into something with genuine engagement potential. The feature doesn’t trigger constantly–enough dry spells occur to respect the game’s high volatility–but when it does activate, it provides tangible relief from the stretches between feature triggers.

The Scatter and Feature Triggers

The Bonus Chest scatter symbol serves double duty: it triggers both the free spins round and the Chests of Souls bonus feature. Landing 3, 4, or 5 Koschei symbols awards payouts of 35x, 300x, and 1,000x your bet respectively–respectable rewards that provide genuine excitement when they materialise. However, the primary draw lies in the free spins mechanic, where scatter symbols take centre stage and unlock the game’s most compelling systems.

Ivan the Immortal King Free Spins

The free spins round forms the beating heart of Ivan the Immortal King, where Quickspin‘s design philosophy crystallises. Landing 3+ Bonus Chest scatters triggers the feature: 3 scatters award 10 free spins, 4 scatters deliver 14 spins, and 5 scatters unlock a generous 18 free spins. Crucially, free spins are retriggerable–additional scatters during the bonus extend the round, keeping momentum alive and preserving hope during successful sequences.

The genuine innovation emerges through the Progressive Multiplier Ladder, a six-tier system that elevates free spins from standard bonus round to something genuinely compelling. Players begin at the Chest level (1x multiplier) and progress upwards by collecting 3 additional scatters during the bonus round. Each tier unlock awards 4 bonus spins alongside the multiplier increase. The ladder climbs as follows: Chest (X1), Hare (X2), Duck (X3), Golden Egg (X5), Needle (X10), and finally the Immortal King (X20). Reaching that final 20x multiplier feels monumental–it’s achievable but demands genuine good fortune or sustained play through multiple retriggers.

This design creates meaningful progression that feels earned. Players chase ladder advancement rather than simply hoping for one massive spin. The system rewards consistency and retrigger success, making each scatter during the bonus feel significant. Approximately 42% of the overall RTP feeds directly into the free spins feature, meaning the base game functions almost as an extended journey towards triggering the real money-making potential.

Quickspin delivers high-quality animations and atmospheric presentation throughout the free spins round. The musical accompaniment and visual flourishes reinforce the fairytale atmosphere, transforming what could feel like a technical bonus sequence into something genuinely immersive. The atmosphere builds tension during the ladder progression, creating genuine excitement around multiplier advancement.

However, this concentration of RTP within the bonus round carries consequences. The base game can feel slow and uneventful between scatter triggers, particularly given the extremely high volatility that defines this release. Extended dry spells between feature activations test patience. Players seeking constant base game engagement or frequent small wins won’t find satisfaction here–this game demands bankroll management and expectation alignment with its volatility profile.

Our Honest Verdict

Rating: 4.3/5

Ivan the Immortal King represents Quickspin at their most ambitious. The Russian folklore theme executes brilliantly through thoughtful symbol design and thematic audio-visual presentation. The progressive multiplier ladder creates a compelling progression system that distinguishes this from countless other free spins-focused releases. For high-volatility enthusiasts comfortable with extended dry spells, the game delivers substantial entertainment value.

The 96.29% RTP sits comfortably within industry standards for high-volatility games, making the experience fair for players who understand the mathematical implications. The theoretical maximum of 40,000x stake proves impressive on paper, though testing reveals practical maximums around 10,222x–still a respectable ceiling that rewards successful multiplier progression. This distinction between theoretical and observed maximums matters; it maintains realism whilst preserving genuine win potential.

The standout weakness stems from base game engagement. With 42% of RTP allocated to free spins, the base game functions primarily as a vehicle to reach the bonus round rather than delivering compelling gameplay itself. Baba Yaga’s mystery feature provides occasional relief, but it doesn’t entirely compensate for the inherent challenge of extended no-win stretches. Players seeking constant action or frequent victories will find themselves frustrated.

Ivan the Immortal King succeeds most for experienced slot players with patience, adequate bankroll, and appreciation for high-variance mechanics. Russian folklore fans will particularly connect with the thematic execution. Casual players or those uncomfortable with extended win droughts should explore games with lower volatility profiles. The mobile experience is flawless–the game plays beautifully across iOS, Android, and desktop without requiring downloads, making it accessible whenever and wherever suited.
