Only Whiskers in the Building Slot Review
An open sash window in a red-brick New York block, a wrought-iron fire escape with one pot of green leaves, and an entire pet shop crammed into the glass. Only Whiskers in the Building spends its charm on the window frame and its money on a single symbol: outside the gold coin and what it does to a win line, almost nothing here is built to pay you.
The game hangs everything on one trick, coins that multiply your wins and then refuse to leave once the bonus starts. Outside that, it’s a cheerful wait for three scatters. The reels run 5×3, with all symbols paying on adjacent reels from the left. iSpy is the other TopSpin title we’ve reviewed; this one’s the lighter of the two.
How the Base Game Pays
There’s no payline map to learn here. A run of matching symbols starting from the leftmost reel is all it takes, on any position of the adjacent reels. Values below are multiples of the total bet.
- Bulldog – 3x, 10x, 40x
- Chihuahua – 2x, 5x, 25x
- Cat – 1x, 3x, 15x
- Hamster Wheel – 0.6x, 2x, 10x
- Food Bowl – 0.5x, 1.5x, 5x
- Dog Tag (Mac) – 0.4x, 1x, 3x
- A / K – 0.2533x, 0.5x, 2x
- Q / J / 10 – 0.1x, 0.2533x, 1x
The cast splits into pets, props and royals, and the pets do the heavy lifting at the top of the ladder. The drop from one tier to the next is steep and it starts immediately below the Bulldog. From the Food Bowl down, a three-of-a-kind win returns less than half the stake.
The royals are the thin end of the ladder, and there’s no escaping them. They’re here to keep the reels ticking over rather than to change anyone’s session. The paytable updates automatically whenever the bet level changes, so the figures on screen always reflect the current stake.
Only the amounts move, never the structure. What that ladder means in practice is simple: the symbol pays fund the waiting, and the modifiers do the earning.
Multiplier Wilds
The Wild Symbol is a gold coin stamped with a paw print, and it only lands on reels 2, 3 and 4. It substitutes for all other symbols to create win lines, and it arrives carrying a random x2 or x3 multiplier.
The multiplier applies to any win line the wild is part of. Better still, when multiple wilds sit on the same win line their multipliers are combined before being applied to the win.
Because the coins are confined to the middle three reels, they can’t start a win on their own; they finish lines rather than open them. What they can do is sit in the middle of a three, four or five-of-a-kind run and multiply the lot, which is where the base game’s biggest wins come from.
The substitution rule is total: the wild stands in for every other symbol in the game, so any gap in a run can be bridged by a coin. The only symbol it doesn’t replace is the scatter, which does its own job on its own reels. That combining rule is the most interesting thing in the base game.
The Best Pet Bonus and Bonus Game
The Bonus Symbol is the game’s scatter, and it may land on reels 1, 3 and 5. Landing three of them triggers the Bonus Game, and the trio also pays 5x the bet regardless of where they sit.
That positional freedom is worth pausing on. Because the three scatters don’t need to sit on a shared line, only on their three allotted reels, the trigger doesn’t compete with the win structure at all. The payout lands as a flat award on top of whatever the spin’s lines are doing.
Triggering the feature awards 9 to 17 free spins, with the exact number revealed during a reveal sequence before the round begins. The spread is wide enough that a 17-spin result is a genuinely different round to a 9-spin one.
A 9-spin bonus has to work quickly; a 17-spin one has room to build. It’s a nice piece of theatre for a game this size.
Sticky Wilds in the Bonus Game
Wilds behave differently once you’re inside the feature. Any wild that lands becomes sticky and holds its position for the remainder of the round, multiplier and all. Nothing clears it; it stays until the last spin is done.
That changes the shape of the round. Each coin that sticks raises the ceiling on every remaining spin, and with wilds confined to the middle three reels they cluster where most win lines pass through. A coin that locks on spin two is still working on spin sixteen, multiplying every line it touches.
The combining rule carries over, and that’s where the feature’s real potential sits. When two or three sticky coins share a line and their multipliers combine, the later spins of a good bonus can pay far more than the early ones ever suggested.
The Bonus Game also runs on its own unique set of reels, so the round isn’t the base game with a different backdrop. What the bonus pays builds spin by spin rather than arriving all at once.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.1/10
Playing this one feels like minding the shop: small, steady business at the window, with the real customers waiting behind the storeroom door. The reason to choose it is that door. Three paw-printed scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 open the only round that matters, and everything before it is a warm-up.
The bonus is where this game pays for itself. Because coins that land stay put and combine on shared lines, a good bonus grows instead of repeating, and a 17-spin draw can snowball late in a way the base game never hints at.
The weakness is everything around that round. With the top symbol paying 40x and the royals beneath it paying almost nothing, wins outside the feature rarely leave an impression, so the slot stands or falls on how the scatters behave. It suits players after a short, cheerful session with one clear goal, and it’ll leave anyone wanting a deeper ladder or more to do between bonuses cold. As a place to pass an afternoon, though, the shop is good company, and the animals are easy to like.
