Primate King Slot Review
A gorilla squats in a vine-strangled ruin, gold-capped skulls swinging from a branch beside him, and the reels he guards pay out in a way most jungle slots don’t bother with. Primate King from Red Tiger puts every coin it has on a single wild, and the unusual part is that the wild is worth it: this is one of the few collection games where finishing the meter genuinely changes how the base game plays rather than just adding a number to it.
It runs on a 5×4 grid with 30 paylines, pays at 95.68% RTP with a hit rate of 28.76%, and caps wins at 3,800x the bet, with stakes from 0.10 to 50 per spin. It’s a tighter, more traditional build than its follow-up, Primate King Megaways, which traded this 30-line layout for the bigger engine. The hook here is the wild. It grows.
How Primate King Pays
All symbols pay from left to right on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel, across the 30 win lines. The paytable splits into four adventure symbols and four card royals.
- Treasure Chest: 2.5, 5, 15, 30 for three, four, five and six of a kind
- Compass: 1.5, 3, 10, 20
- Map: 1, 2, 6, 12
- Snake: 0.5, 1, 3, 6
- Spade: 0.2, 0.5, 1.5, 3
- Heart: 0.2, 0.4, 1.2, 2.5
- Diamond: 0.1, 0.3, 1, 2
- Club: 0.1, 0.2, 0.6, 1.2
The table steps down in even increments rather than clustering around one or two symbols, so the drop from a full line of Treasure Chests to a full line of royals is wide but every rung between it is a smaller step. That shape rewards the top half of the table disproportionately: a six-of-a-kind Chest is worth twenty-five times a six-of-a-kind Club, which is where the serious line-bet multiples live.
The royals sit close together at the bottom, so they function less as win sources in their own right and more as filler for lines the adventure symbols can’t complete. With a hit rate of 28.76%, plenty of those small royal lines land; they just don’t move the needle much on their own.
The Primate Wild substitutes for all paying symbols. That’s its day job. What makes it the centre of the game is everything stacked on top of that substitution, which is the next section’s business.
The Primate Wild System
There’s no free spins round in Primate King and no scatter to chase. The whole bonus engine is the wild itself, fed by a collection mechanic that runs through the base game for as long as there are upgrades left to unlock. Three systems feed into it.
Gold Coins and the Progress Bar
While upgrades remain locked, Gold Coins can appear attached to the bottom right-hand corner of any symbol on the reels. They only count if a Primate Wild lands on the same spin, in which case they’re collected into the Primate Wild Progress Bar, which sits to the right of the reels tracking the haul above the coin collection itself.
That timing rule matters more than it looks. A coin landing on a spin without a wild is simply lost, so the mechanic ties the collection to the wild’s arrival rather than paying out on every spin. The thresholds are fixed, and they’re steep:
- 30 Gold Coins unlocks Upgrade #1
- 60 Gold Coins unlocks Upgrade #2
- 90 Gold Coins unlocks the final Upgrade
Each unlocked upgrade improves the Primate Wild, and once the final one is banked the progress bar disappears from the screen and Gold Coins stop appearing altogether. The collection is a journey with an end, not a permanent meter: everything the game has to offer is folded into the wild by the time the ninetieth coin lands.
Primate Smash
When the Primate Wild lands but the spin produces no win, he may smash the reels, clearing every paying symbol off the grid and letting top-paying symbols fall into the empty positions. The result is a guaranteed win on a spin that would otherwise have returned nothing.
The falling symbols come from the top of the table, so the guaranteed win isn’t a token one: a smashed grid that refills with adventure symbols can produce a far better line than the original spin had any right to. It’s a consolation mechanic rather than a jackpot mechanic, and it does a lot for how the base game feels: a wild landing dead isn’t a dead spin.
Multiplier Wilds
A banner reading ‘MULTIPLIER WILDS!’ appears above the reels during play, with coin icons shown above the reels.
The upgrade path and the smash work together, too. The smash only fires when the wild lands without a win. By the final upgrade, the wild is pulling the base game in both directions at once: its substitutions when it helps, and a rescue when it doesn’t.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.1/10
Playing Primate King is watching one gorilla get steadily stronger, and that’s its whole appeal. Every spin quietly feeds the same meter, the Primate Smash keeps losing spins from feeling like total losses, and by the end you’re playing a different, better game than the one you started with. That arc is the reason to sit down here rather than at a scatter-chaser.
The best thing about it is the commitment: ninety coins, three upgrades, all of it pointed at one symbol, and the finished wild genuinely earns the buildup. The worst is that the payoff tops out at 3,800x, which is a small kingdom for this much building. All that patience is repaid with competence, not fireworks.
It’s a good fit for anyone who likes a game that rewards sticking around and doesn’t need a bonus round to break up the rhythm. Players hunting big ceilings are better served elsewhere in the jungle. The rest can settle in under the vines; the throne is modest, but it’s comfortably held.
