Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness Slot Review

The intrepid explorer Rich Wilde is once again on his quest to obtain mythical treasures in Play n Go’s new adventure, the Tome of Madness!

Play n Go are well known for their Rich Wilde slots and have made him somewhat a bit of a slot celebrity – Chances are, you’ve probably scrolled past a thumbnail or two with him in it whilst going about your slot business.

Why is he so famous you might ask? Well, simple – Because Rich Wilde slots are engaging with their vibrant graphics and compelling mechanics, not to mention that there is the opportunity to grab a big win or two.

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness is a bit different to the generic crowd. For those slot veterans out there, imagine “Reactoonz” but with a much darker, eerie theme. It’s not surprising that they share some similarities, as Reactoonz is actually made by Play N Go as well!

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness Slot Theme

The theme for this slot is quite ominous with the backdrop of a crypt. Rich Wilde himself standing to the right of the reels.

Upon loading up the slot, you will be greeted with a somewhat strange quote by “H.P Lovecraft”. Not something you see everyday, however fun fact – H.P Lovecraft was an American Writer of weird and horror fiction, and also well-known for his famous creation to the horror world, Cthulhu!

This intro sets you up for the theme throughout pretty well, and I for one welcome our evil new overlord Cthulhu into the slot world. It certainly is unique when compared to previous Rich Wilde adventures or any slot for that matter, so it certainly piqued my interest from inception.

Betting and Symbols

Betting options are more or less standard across the Board when it comes to Rich Wilde and his adventures. The lowest bet is 0.10, with the highest being 100.00 for any hi-rollers out there. That said, there’s also plenty of options in between, so certainly an option for all budgets.

A medallion with our 8 tentacled friend Cthulhu imprinted on it is the top paying symbol, and then this is followed in order by the Dagger, Ring and Skull for the higher paying symbols.

The lower paying symbols are all represented by different coloured gemstones with various runes etched into them. These consist of a Purple, Red, Blue and Green gemstone.

In addition to the above, there are also three different types of Wild symbols that you may encounter throughout the game, and each of them have different meanings. The first one is the terrifying Necronomicon, the fabled book of the dead, which features as a standard Wild and substitutes for all symbols, but also has a chance to trigger a “portal” effect. The second is the recognisable Rich Wilde himself, and he will substitute for all symbols but also double any wins he’s included in too. Lastly, the mighty dark lord Cthulhu itself serves as the final wild, covering multiple symbols instantaneously as it falls down the board.

It’s worth noting however that Cthulhu will only appear in the Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness Bonus round if you are able to trigger it – More on that in the bonus section below.

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness: The Base Game and Features

The base game appears a bit unlike most other slots at first glance, however after a few spins, you will start to notice some similarities.

The reels in their entirety are set on a 5×5 grid. There are only 5 paylines as well, but don’t think that this means there is any shortage of opportunities for the treasures that await.

Matching any 4 or more matching symbols will achieve a win, as long as they are touching, horizontally or vertically.

Another notable point is that the symbols cascade too, so there is some extra potential for wins here, and this mechanic also serves as a vital function for the features present.

The main objective in Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness Slot is to charge the portal meter located on the top left hand side of the reels in one spin.

When you reach the quarter way milestone, 2 Necronomicon Wilds will appear on the reels randomly to assist with your big win endeavours. Once you reach half way, 2 Necronomicon Wilds will appear again but this time, one of them will trigger

Abyss” which removes a row or a column randomly. When the portal is three quarters charged, you guessed it – 2 Necronomicon Wilds again, but this time one of them will now trigger “Void” – This will remove all of 1 symbol at random from the reels. When the portal is fully charged, it’s time for you to enter the Bonus.

You may have also noticed just below the portal, there is a grid with an eye that moves across it in a different position every time you spin. If you watch the reels, you will sometimes see a randomly positioned purple frame around the box that symbols sit in. They call these “Eye Marks”, and they serve as another means to help you get to meet the big scary octopus himself in the bonus.

You can open an eye by forming a win in the Eye Mark’s location itself, and this will add 2 Necronomicon Wilds to the board. Furthermore, opening the eye will award 2 Necronomicon wilds when no more wins are created.

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness Free Spins

Upon charging the portal with wins, specifically 42 winning symbols, you will be ready to enter the “Other World Free Round” bonus.

During the bonus, the portal will be replaced by a slightly different looking one with an eye at the centre. Similarly to how the usual portal functions, any wins will help to charge this.

You will only be given a single spin and three portal effects (“Void and “Abyss”). Significantly more Eye Marks are added to the reels to ensure there is ample opportunity for a large combo of cascading wins. When your combo ends and you have no more winning combinations, one of the initial portal effects will be used to attempt to re-ignite your cascading combo.

If all portal effects are used before you’ve finally charged the portal, the round will end, however if you manage to charge it, this is where the magic happens…

The “Mega Wild” Cthulhu will make its presence known and moves down the grid to cause carnage and create the best conditions possible for you to hit that all elusive x2000 jackpot.

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness: Our Verdict

Rich Wilde and the Tome of Madness Slot is certainly different! It may not be to everyone’s tastes, but it is certain to get your attention with it’s ominous theme and music to match.

It’s jackpot may be slightly lower than you are used to, but with it’s engrossing core gameplay coupled with its intriguing blend of famous horror fiction and slots, it is certainly worth a play to see what it has to offer – Even if that does consist of a giant, evil, Mega Wild octopus.

If you are a fan of Rich Wildes other adventures, or even popular Play N Go titles with similar mechanics such as Reactoonz or Reactoonz 2, you might be in for a treat!
