Cthulhu Slot Review
Two hulking stone idols of Cthulhu crouch either side of the reels, tentacled faces and folded bat-wings carved from the same grey rock, while a sunken temple crumbles into green-black gloom behind them. G.Games has built a slot that puts almost nothing in front of that backdrop: the base game is bare, and one bonus round carries the entire game. That’s an unusual way to build a slot, and whether the bet pays off is the whole story here.
Underneath the ruin, Cthulhu is a 5×3 grid with ten fixed paylines, a 95.42% RTP, medium-high volatility and stakes from 0.20 to 100 per spin. The feature set is small enough to count on one hand. It’s a leaner, stranger cousin to the studio’s Dead Man’s Fingers.
Base Game & Features
The base game is ten fixed bet lines across five reels and three rows, with winning combinations counted from the leftmost reel only. Only the highest combination on each line pays, and wins on different lines add together. It’s the most conventional layout in slots, and Cthulhu doesn’t bend it.
The essentials, in one place:
- 5×3 grid, five reels and three rows
- 10 fixed bet lines, paying left to right
- 95.42% RTP
- Medium-high volatility
- Hit frequency of 15.67%
- Stakes from 0.20 to 100 per spin
That hit rate shapes every session. One win in every six or so spins isn’t stingy, but at medium-high volatility most of those wins are small, and the pays that actually move a balance are rare enough that the gaps between them feel long. This is a game built for players who don’t need something to happen on every spin.
The betting range is broad for a ten-line game. At the minimum stake of 0.20 each line carries 0.02, which makes the quiet stretches cheap to sit through; at 100 the same maths plays out at stakes most medium-high games reserve for themselves. Nothing about the features changes with stake size, so the choice is purely about how much each spin costs while the scatters make up their mind.
It’s worth being clear about what “medium-high” means in practice, because Cthulhu sits in the awkward middle of the scale rather than at either end. A pure high-volatility game pays rarely and big; a low one pays little and often. This one pays reasonably often – that 15.67% hit rate – at sizes that usually don’t justify the wait, which produces a rhythm of small nudges punctuated by the occasional real hit.
The WILD symbol substitutes for any symbol other than the scatter. That’s its whole job, and it’s the only help the base game gets: there’s no second modifier, no random feature, no respin waiting between the statues. Everything else this slot does happens in the bonus game, which makes the base game a corridor rather than a destination.
There’s a case for that spareness. A base game with nothing to interrupt it lets the trigger feel like an event, and the murky ruin artwork gives the quiet spins something worth looking at while the scatters make up their mind. Whether the corridor is worth walking depends entirely on what’s at the end of it.
Cthulhu Free Spins & the Craze of Cthulhu Bonus Game
Scatters landing on reels one, three and five trigger the bonus game with 10 free spins. That’s the only way in: there’s no buy option and no alternate entry route, so the base game’s job is entirely to carry you to those three scatters.
The whole round, in brief:
- Scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 award 10 free spins
- Each Adventurer symbol that appears can become a Sticky Wild, held for the rest of the round
- A Sticky Wild turns transparent if a scatter needs its position, so the scatter still counts
- Scatters on reels 1, 3 and 5 during the round retrigger another 10 free spins
Adventurers and Sticky Wilds
During the bonus game, each time an Adventurer symbol appears it has a chance of becoming a Sticky Wild, which then holds its position for the remainder of the round. The conversion isn’t guaranteed, so an Adventurer landing is a moment of suspense rather than an instant win. This is the mechanic the whole game is built around.
The compounding is what separates it from a standard free spins round. A sticky wild that lands on the first spin is working for nine more spins; one that lands on the last barely works at all. Early conversions are worth far more than late ones, and because every spin is another chance for an Adventurer to appear, a round can keep improving right up to its final moments.
Transparent Sticky Wilds and Retriggers
A sticky wild won’t block a scatter from appearing. When the two collide, the wild becomes a Transparent Sticky Wild, holding its place while letting the scatter through. It’s a small piece of design, but a thoughtful one: the round’s best symbol doesn’t cost you the round’s retrigger.
That retrigger matters more here than in most games. Ten additional free spins means ten more chances for Adventurers to convert, and every new sticky wild strengthens a grid that may already be carrying several. A long round with wilds locked in across the reels and a retrigger or two is where this slot’s ceiling sits.
It’s worth walking through how a strong round unfolds. Spin one opens with ten spins on a clean grid; any Adventurer that converts leaves a wild sitting on the reels for spins two through ten. By mid-round several wilds may be stacked across the ten lines, each substitution widening the combinations available, so a late retrigger doesn’t just extend the round, it extends it at the round’s richest point. A short round with no conversions, by contrast, plays like the base game with free spins attached.
The trigger itself is narrower than it looks. Three scatters sounds modest until you notice the restriction: they only count on reels one, three and five, which means two of the five reels can never carry one. The scatter has to arrive in exactly three of the eligible positions at once, which is a harder ask than a three-anywhere trigger in a game with scatter symbols on every reel. Patience is part of the design.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6.4/10
Playing Cthulhu means long stretches of quiet spinning in a drowned ruin, waiting for three scatters to surface. The reason to sit through it is the round at the end: the bonus game genuinely escalates, and a cluster of sticky wilds with a retrigger underneath it can turn ten free spins into something the murky base reels never promise.
The best thing here is that the bonus round grows in value as it runs, so a round can be worth more on its last spin than its first. The worst is the emptiness around it, because the base game gives you nothing but a standard wild, and 95.42% with medium-high volatility makes the waiting expensive.
This one suits patient players who like a slow build and don’t mind the quiet; it isn’t for anyone who wants something happening between bonuses. If you can sit still in the deep, the ruin eventually gives up its gold.
