Rolling the Bones Slot Review
Fog rolls through a crooked graveyard town, and the arcade cabinet at its centre is built entirely from bones: a grinning fanged skull caps the reels, clawed hands grip the top corners, and femur columns run down each side. Amber windows glow through the teal mist, and a bone-framed side panel sits empty next to the reels, waiting.
That empty panel is the whole point. Rolling the Bones pays so little through its own reels, with no wild and a 25x top symbol, that nearly all of its real money is stashed on the board beside them, and you only get at it when a dice lands alongside a scatter win. It’s a bold way to build a scatter-pays game, and Massive Studios commits to it fully: a 6×5 grid, 96.57% RTP, and a 10,000x cap that doubles to 20,000x in the enhanced modes. Whether that side bet on a side panel pays off depends on how much waiting you’ll do between dice.
Base Game & Features
Symbols pay anywhere on the reels. The count of matching symbols on screen at the end of a spin sets the win, and eight of a kind is the entry point for every symbol in the game. It’s a scatter-pays setup, so there are no paylines to trace and no positions that matter, only totals.
Every win triggers a cascade. Winning symbols are paid out and removed, new symbols drop into the gaps, and the process repeats until no new winning group forms. Wins bank only once the whole cascade chain has finished, so a single spin can keep paying long after it started.
All pays are multiples of the total bet. The full ladder, top to bottom:
- Horseshoe: 25x for 15+, 10x for 12-14, 5x for 10-11, 2x for 8-9
- Beer mug skull: 10x for 15+, 5x for 12-14, 2.5x for 10-11, 1.25x for 8-9
- Skeleton hand: 7.5x for 15+, 4x for 12-14, 1x for 10-11, 0.5x for 8-9
- Candle: 4x for 15+, 2.5x for 12-14, 0.5x for 10-11, 0.25x for 8-9
- Red diamond and orange hexagon gem: 2.5x for 15+, 1x for 12-14, 0.25x for 10-11, 0.15x for 8-9
- Gold ingot, purple triangle and green emerald: 1.5x for 15+, 0.5x for 12-14, 0.15x for 10-11, 0.05x for 8-9
There’s no wild anywhere in the paytable, so every win runs through the base symbols unassisted. Symbol quality matters far more than symbol position ever could.
The Race Track
That empty side panel is the Race Track, and it’s the game’s centrepiece. In the base game or the free games, a dice landing on any spin that carries a scatter win opens the track above the reels. From there, the dice take over.
All dice in view roll, and BONES, the skull mascot, moves that number of spaces around the track onto increasing multipliers. Whichever multiplier he’s standing on when the game ends gets applied to the total win for that game.
More dice means more movement, and more movement means a bigger multiplier. It’s the only route to the larger wins the paytable can’t reach on its own, which is why the trigger matters: no dice, no track, and a spin settles for whatever the clusters alone can pay.
GO, Boost and Extra Dice
Passing GO resets the track for BONES and increases every multiplier around it, so a long run around the board makes the next lap worth more than the last. It’s a compounding loop: the further he travels, the pricier each space becomes.
Boost and Super Boost spaces speed things up. Landing on Boost moves BONES between two and four extra places; Super Boost moves him between eight and 31. The jump from one to the other is enormous, and a Super Boost late in a run can land him on the biggest multipliers on the board.
Landing on the dice symbol adds one or two additional dice to the reels, which in turn roll and move him further still. A single spin can chain all of it together: dice land, the track opens, more dice arrive, and the multiplier keeps climbing while the cascades run.
Rolling the Bones Bonus Features & Free Spins
Four or more scatter symbols, the gold skull coins, award the free games. The Race Track stays live throughout, so the round you’re really playing for is one where scatters, dice and a loaded track arrive together.
- 4 scatter symbols award 8 free games
- 5 scatter symbols award 12 free games
- 6 scatter symbols award 16 free games
The free games run on the same grid, the same cascades and the same track rules as the base game. What changes is simply time: more spins means more chances for a dice to land alongside a scatter win, and more laps of a track that only ever gets more expensive to stand on.
Double Max
Before you play, there’s a game mode choice, and it’s a straight doubling. Standard play carries a 10,000x maximum payout per round; Double Max doubles the ceiling to 20,000x.
The same 20,000x figure applies to the enhanced modes and bonus buys, so the biggest money in the game sits behind that selection. It’s a clean choice with no hidden mechanics: one ceiling, doubled, and everything else plays identically.
Game Enhancers and Bonus Buys
The M button opens the buy menu, which sells Game Enhancers and Bonus Buys outright. Enhancers cover the first tier of what’s on offer, with further options behind them.
The prices live inside the menu itself rather than being printed in the rules, so check them there before committing. As with Double Max, anything bought through this menu carries the 20,000x ceiling rather than the standard one.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.8/10
This is mostly a waiting game with one very good reason to wait: when a dice lands, the reels stop being the story and the little board beside them takes over. There’s a genuine thrill in that handover, watching BONES rattle round a track that only gets more generous the longer he stays on it.
The best thing here is that the track compounds. Every lap past GO raises every multiplier on the board, so a lucky round doesn’t just pay well once, it keeps getting better while it runs. The worst thing is the silence between dice: the reels alone are thin, with no wild and a modest top symbol, and long stretches can pass where very little happens.
It’s built for players who enjoy a slow build towards a sudden payout, and for anyone who likes their scatter-pays with something extra going on beside the grid. If you want constant action from the reels themselves, this haunted cabinet will feel quiet. For the patient, the fog occasionally lifts spectacularly.
