Rudis

Rudis Slot Review

Stone columns frame the grid, two braziers burn orange beneath it, and a murmillo and a retiarius stand carved on their plinths either side, all of it rendered in warm, chunky 3D by Bitpunch. Here’s the arguable part: Rudis is a better game for having almost nothing in it. Where most arena slots stack pick’em rounds and jackpots on top of each other, this one bets everything on a single mechanic – the expanding multiplier wild – and trusts it to carry both the base game and the bonus round. Whether that’s focus or thinness depends on how much you want from a spin.

Rudis runs at 94% RTP with high volatility, on six reels and 1,728 ways in the base game. Stakes sit between 0.10 and 50 a spin. Bitpunch’s back catalogue includes Clash of Claws and Headhunter, with Cyber Doom sitting alongside them, and Rudis shares their appetite for chunky 3D presentation rather than feature sprawl.

Base Game & Features

The name is a neat piece of Roman history: a rudis was the wooden sword awarded to a gladiator who earned his freedom. Fitting, then, that the whole game is built around warriors and their weapons, from the flanking fighters on their plinths to the armament symbols on the grid.

The grid is a 5×4 layout spread across six reels, and it doesn’t sit still. Reels shrink and expand from spin to spin, showing empty cells where positions have dropped away and multiplier tiles where they’ve grown in. The ways count moves with them: a spin can run at 144 ways, the next at 864, and a full stretch of the grid takes it up to 4,320.

• 4,320 Ways – the widest grid observed in play
• 2,160 Ways
• 1,728 Ways – the base game’s standard count
• 1,080 Ways
• 864 Ways
• 384 Ways
• 144 Ways – the narrowest count seen on the reels

Wins are handled by the All Ways Pays system: there are no fixed paylines, and symbols just need to land on adjacent reels from the left to form a win. Wins per way are calculated on the highest combination, reading left to right. Only the best combination counts.

Wilds can carry a multiplier of their own – x2, x3 and x5 tiles all appear – and expand to cover an entire reel when they land. That’s the base game’s one real trick, and it does the heavy lifting between bonuses.

The Golden Bet

Activate the Golden Bet and your stake increases in exchange for double the chance of triggering free spins. It’s a straightforward choice: pay more per spin, see the bonus round sooner. Switch it on and every spin costs more; switch it off and the trigger odds return to standard. The base game keeps working either way.

With a hit frequency of 22.09%, the base game isn’t shy about dishing out small wins, so the premium is a question of patience rather than access. Four mechanics drive everything the game does:

• Wild Symbol – lands on a reel, carries a multiplier, expands to fill it
• Free Spins – three or more Scatters trigger the round, where every Wild expands
• Golden Bet – an increased stake that doubles your free spins trigger chances
• All Ways Pays – no fixed paylines; symbols on adjacent reels win from the left

Symbol Values

The paytable splits into three tiers: warriors up top, weapons in the middle, royals at the bottom. Six-of-a-kind is where the money is, and the values step down quickly from there. Multiples of your stake, for three to six of a kind:

• Orange-face Warrior: 0.5x / 0.7x / 1.5x / 2.5x
• Green-face Warrior: 0.4x / 0.6x / 0.8x / 1x
• Purple Gem/Axe: 0.3x / 0.5x / 0.6x / 0.8x
• Sword/Shield: 0.2x / 0.4x / 0.5x / 0.6x
• Green Axe: 0.2x / 0.4x / 0.5x / 0.6x
• A: 0.2x / 0.3x / 0.4x / 0.5x
• K: 0.2x / 0.3x / 0.4x / 0.5x
• Q: 0.1x / 0.2x / 0.3x / 0.4x
• J: 0.1x / 0.2x / 0.3x / 0.4x
• 10: 0.1x / 0.2x / 0.3x / 0.4x

Rudis Free Spins & Bonus Features

Free Spins

Land three or more Scatters and the free spins round begins. The hook is simple: every Wild expands during free spins. In a game where wilds already carry multipliers and cover whole reels in the base game, the bonus round is that same mechanic with the brakes off.

The round works in three steps. Scatters land and trigger the feature. Every wild that appears grows to fill its reel, multiplier attached. Wins then pay across whatever the ways count has stretched to on that spin, with shrinking and expanding reels carrying over into the round itself.

Because the reels keep shifting during the round, the ways count on any given free spin can be generous or thin. A wide grid with several expanded multiplier wilds across it is where the round pays properly; a narrow one gives the wilds less to work with. The order the reels land in matters as much as the wilds themselves.

That combination is where the game’s real potential sits. A fully expanded set of wilds across a wide grid, each carrying its own multiplier, turns a single spin into something the paytable alone doesn’t hint at.

Bonus Buy

A buy button sits in the top interface for players who’d rather skip the scatter chase and go straight to the round. Between the buy and the Golden Bet, there are two different routes to the bonus, at two different price points, and neither is required: both are optional accelerators on the same destination.

They suit different tempers. The Golden Bet keeps the base game in play and nudges the odds while every spin runs. The buy drops you into the round at once, with no scatter chase at all, and costs accordingly more for the shortcut.

Our Honest Verdict

Overall Rating: 7/10

Playing Rudis is like watching a one-man fight in a big arena: the crowd’s there for a single combatant, and that combatant is the expanding multiplier wild. It’s the one reason to pick this over any other gladiator slot, and when several of them stack across a wide grid, it earns the ticket on its own.

The strength is that focus. Nothing here is half-built; the wild mechanic works identically in both game modes, and the shifting reels give every spin a different shape without a second system to learn. The weakness is the price of admission: 94% RTP is well below what most studios ship at.

This suits players who’d rather master one deep mechanic than juggle four shallow ones, and anyone who values a handsomely built arena over a crowded one. Anyone who needs layered bonus rounds on the side will find it lean. As a single sword going into the sand, though, it swings well above its weight.
