Sails of Riches Slot Review
A galleon under black sails cuts through glowing turquoise swell by moonlight, a brass ship’s wheel mounted at the top of the reel frame. Sails of Riches is a pirate slot that barely cares about its reels: almost everything worth winning arrives through coins piling up in one place or another, and the spinning itself is mostly a delivery mechanism. That’s an unusual way to build a game on 4,096 ways, and it’s the whole reason this one is worth understanding.
Play’n GO‘s seafaring release runs on a 6×4 grid with 4,096 ways to win, at mid to high volatility, with wins of up to 10,000x the bet. It sits alongside Jolly Roger Wild Kraken, Captain Glum: Pirate Hunter and Boat Bonanza in the studio’s nautical corner, and it’s the most mechanically intricate of the three.
How the Base Game Pays
Wins are paid for adjacent symbols from left to right, starting on the left-most reel, and only the highest winning combination counts per symbol. When multiple ways land in one round, the winnings are added together. Feature and scatter wins are added on top of way wins, and everything is paid out at the end of the round.
The wild is a ship that substitutes for everything except the two scatters, and six of it pays 6x the bet, which makes it the richest single symbol on the reels. The paying symbols are pirate-themed icons and card values:
- Klaus Störtebeker (man): 1x, 2x, 3x and 5x for three to six
- Treasure Map: 1x, 1.8x, 3x and 5x for three to six
- Jolly Roger Flag / Mug of Beer: 0.7x, 1.5x, 2x and 3x for three to six
- A / K: 0.3x, 0.5x, 1x and 1.4x for three to six
- Q / J / 10: 0.2x, 0.4x, 0.6x and 1x for three to six
All values are multiples of the total bet. The top of the table is flat rather than steep, which tells you where the real money lives: the features, not the reels.
Bets move one step at a time with the plus and minus buttons, and the step size is set by the bet level. If a balance runs too low for the selected bet, the game automatically drops to the highest affordable stake rather than stopping play, and it doesn’t climb back up on its own after a win.
For the impatient, holding the spacebar activates Hyper Spin mode, which speeds the reels up considerably and slows back down whenever a feature triggers. Fast Play is a separate toggle for the same idea. Auto Play runs consecutive rounds automatically and stops if a setting changes or the balance runs low.
The Ship of Riches
A ship sits above the reels, and it’s more than decoration. Whenever five or fewer coin scatters land, they’re collected into the Ship of Riches. Once at least one coin has been collected, the ship has a chance to trigger and award an instant prize at random on any spin where a coin is collected.
The prizes are a four-step ladder:
- MINI: 20x the total bet
- MINOR: 50x the total bet
- MAJOR: 100x the total bet
- GRAND: 1,000x the total bet
The ship visibly grows as coins are collected, but the size is purely cosmetic and has no bearing on how likely the feature is to trigger. The GRAND at 1,000x is a tenth of the game’s ceiling on its own.
The Ship of Riches isn’t active during free spins or the Vitalien Lock, so it’s a base game concern only. It’s the quietest of the three features, and the one you’ll trigger most by accident.
Vitalien Lock
The coin scatters have a second job. If four or five of them land, the reels with no coin on them re-spin, giving the collection another chance to grow. Land six coins and the Vitalien Lock triggers properly: three initial re-spins are awarded, and coin scatters that land during them stick in place.
Every re-spin that brings in at least one new coin resets the count back to three, so the round keeps going while the coins keep coming. The target is a full screen.
Filling the entire grid pays a flat 500x the total bet, regardless of the values printed on the coins that got you there. Coin scatters pay on the left-most reel only, and a full board is the only outcome where their printed values stop mattering entirely.
Free Spins and the Wheel
Three or more treasure chest scatters trigger the free spins, but not directly: first comes a wheel of chance with two parts, a multiplier segment and a free spins segment. The more chests you land, the better the wheel gets. The segments by trigger count:
- 3 chests: 10, 15, 20, 25 or 30 free spins
- 4 chests: 15, 20, 25 or 30 free spins
- 5 chests: 20, 25 or 30 free spins
- 6 chests: 25 or 30 free spins
The starting multiplier runs from x1 up to x5, again decided by the wheel. Free spins play out at the same bet as the round that triggered them, and that bet can’t be changed while the feature is running.
Multiplier Wilds
During free spins, special wilds marked x1, x2 or x3 can land on any reel. Each one adds its value to a multiplier counter above the reels, and that counter applies to every win in the round. A run of x2 and x3 wilds early on can push the multiplier well into double figures, and every win from then rides on it.
Treasure chest scatters still land in the round, and each one adds +1 to the free spins counter, up to a maximum of 65 free spins. Coin scatters don’t appear at all, so the multiplier counter is the only thing accumulating.
The combination of a climbing multiplier, an extending spin count and 4,096 ways is where the game’s 10,000x ceiling has to be earned. The counter only ever moves upwards, which is the round’s quiet strength.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.2/10
This is a game about waiting for the coins to add up, and the moonlit cove makes the waiting pleasant. Somebody chooses it for that build: coins going into the ship, then the re-spins, then free spins where a counter climbs and refuses to come down. It rewards patience better than a pirate slot that pays on the spot.
The free spins round is the strongest thing here, because everything in it compounds. The wilds feed the multiplier, the chests extend the round, and neither ever resets, so a good session keeps getting better rather than running out. The base game lets the side down. The top symbol pays 5x for six of a kind, which is thin, and the Ship of Riches pays out when it feels like it, not when you’ve earned anything.
For players who like a collection slot with three systems ticking over at once and real retrigger potential, this is one of the better ones, and the 10,000x ceiling gives it somewhere to go. Anyone who wants the reels themselves to pay will find the base game stingy and the waiting long. Everyone else can settle in under the black sails and let the coins come to them.
