Sweet Wilds

Sweet Wilds Slot Review

Palm fronds hang over a turquoise sea, a beach bar in weathered wood and mint paint serves its patrons, and a striped parasol shades anyone who’d rather not move. AvatarUX have set their reels on that beach and made one argument: that a payline slot can be worth watching even when it barely pays, provided a wild in the right row can be worth 25 times a wild in the wrong one.

It’s a 5×5 grid with 40 paylines, medium-high volatility, a 94% RTP and a hit frequency of 28.15%, with stakes from 0.20 to 300 per spin. AvatarUX are better known for the PopWins family – CherryPop, HippoPop and Lollipop among them – so a wild-led build is a change of pace for the studio.

Base Game & Features

The grid is five reels by five rows, with 40 paylines running left to right. Wins from different paylines are added together, and only the highest combination on each line counts. Payouts are multiples of the total bet.

The symbols are a beach-menu line-up: fish and corn dog, a red swirl ice cream and a pink soft serve at the top, a blue scoop and a two-tone popsicle in the middle, and the royals – A, K, Q and J – at the bottom. The values:

• Fish/Corn dog, Red swirl ice cream, Pink soft serve: 0.6x (3), 1.2x (4), 2.4x (5)
• Blue scoop, Popsicle: 0.4x (3), 0.8x (4), 1.6x (5)
• A, K, Q, J: 0.2x (3), 0.4x (4), 0.8x (5)

Those are modest numbers on their own. The wilds are where the money is meant to come from, and everything on the machine is arranged around them: a Reward Reel on the left of the grid hands out multipliers and clones to wilds row by row, every single spin.

The Reward Reel

Down the left side of the screen sits a second, narrower reel that redraws every spin. Each position on it shows either a reward or a blank, and each reward applies only to the wilds sitting on the same row as that Reward symbol. Rewards resolve from the bottom of the reel upward, so a multi-row windfall builds from the base of the grid.

Three rewards can appear. A Multiplier Wild gives every wild on that row a multiplier value. A Clone Wild copies each wild on the row to random positions across the reels. The combined Multiplier and Clone Wild does both at once – multipliers first, then clones. A blank row simply pays nothing out to its wilds.

The row-matching rule is what gives the reel its texture. A big multiplier on row one means nothing without a wild parked there to receive it, so the placement of a single wild matters as much as the reward drawn beside it.

Wilds and Multipliers

Wilds can land on any reel and substitute for paying symbols. A wild’s multiplier, if it has one, applies to the total win of each payline it contributes to, and where several multiplied wilds share a line, their values are added together. The default wild multiplier is x1.

When a Clone reward lands a wild on top of an existing wild, the two merge into one symbol carrying the doubled sum of both multipliers. Stacked clone rows building merged wilds is the biggest single swing the base game offers.

Multiplier values on the Reward Reel run from 2x up to 25x, and a single Wild x25 on the reels turns even the royals into a respectable line. A reward only fires when a wild happens to sit on its row, though, and blank rows mean plenty of spins resolve with the left reel contributing nothing at all.

Sweet Wilds Free Spins & Bonus Features

Free Spins

Collecting Bonus symbols triggers the round, and the more you collect, the longer it runs. Bonus symbols can appear during the round too, each one adding a single free spin. The round plays out at the same line and bet as the triggering spin.

• 2 Bonus symbols: 5 free spins
• 3 Bonus symbols: 7 free spins
• 4 Bonus symbols: 9 free spins
• 5 Bonus symbols: 12 free spins

When the round starts, the triggering Bonus symbols transform into wilds and stay on the grid from the first spin. That opening cluster of wilds is what the whole round is built to exploit.

Falling Wilds and Sticky Wilds

During free spins, every wild on the grid drops one position per spin until it exits at the bottom. New wilds keep landing as the old ones fall away, so the grid is never empty of them for long.

Randomly, at the moment a wild begins to move, any number of them can turn sticky for that spin, holding their position instead of falling. A sticky wild in the right row when a Multiplier reward lands is where the round pays at its best, and merged wilds – a clone landing on an existing wild, doubling the summed multipliers – carry their full value down the grid as they fall.

The two systems feed each other. Falling wilds keep moving symbols into rows that might hold a reward, sticky holds buy a wild an extra spin in a favourable spot, and the Reward Reel keeps redrawing throughout the round exactly as it does in the base game.

XPRESS Bonus Buy

For players who’d rather skip the collecting, the XPRESS menu sells direct entry to the bonus. The base purchase costs 60x the bet and starts the round with 5 free spins and 2 starting wilds. Higher tiers are available, each priced separately and starting with more free spins and more wilds on the grid.

• Base XPRESS: 60x bet – 5 free spins, 2 starting wilds
• Higher tiers: increasing starting wilds and spins, at increasing cost

Our Honest Verdict

Overall Rating: 7.2/10

Most of a Sweet Wilds session is spent reading the left edge of the screen rather than the reels, and if that sounds like a complaint, it isn’t – the reason to pick this over a dozen other beach slots is that no other grid makes you care quite this much about which row a wild lands in. It’s a slow afternoon at the bar, watching the same corner of the machine.

The free spins round is the pay-off, and it’s a good one: falling wilds keep drifting into rewarded rows, so the round compounds instead of resetting, and one merged multiplier can carry a long way down. The weakness is everything underneath. Five top symbols pay 2.4x, the RTP is 94%, and the maximum win of 10,000x the stake sits a long way above anything the line pays suggest, so the base game has to be its own entertainment – and mostly it is.

This is one for people who enjoy multiplier maths and don’t need the reels themselves to do anything dramatic. PopWins fans chasing expanding grids will find it quiet. For everyone else, it’s a well-built game with one idea and the nerve to stick to it, and the parasol stays up.
