The Castle of Slotenstein Slot Review
Three carved pumpkins sit along the top of the reel frame, each with a different coloured flame licking out of its stem, and behind them a pale castle glows against a night sky of bare, clawing branches. That’s the first thing The Castle of Slotenstein shows you: Halloween as a lush, glossy cartoon, all blue moonlight and orange candlelight, with a leaning tombstone and a fourth jack-o’-lantern half-buried in the grass.
Those pumpkins aren’t decoration – each is tied directly to what the bonus round does. Evoplay, the studio behind 3 Flaming Clovers and Piggyfest Bonanza, have built the whole game around that link. It runs on a 5×3 grid, it doesn’t publish an RTP figure, and its best ideas live behind the castle walls.
Base Game & Features
The base game is a five-reel, three-row setup, and the reels sit inside a riveted brass-and-copper industrial frame with glowing green tubes running up the sides. It’s a handsome piece of presentation. The gothic-lab frame suits a game named after a certain reanimated baron.
Symbols run from a Dracula-like man at the top down through a crow, a brain and a pair of lab items, with the A, K, Q and J royals filling out the bottom of the ladder. The man is the one worth chasing, though even five of him returns just 1.5x your stake.
Here’s what every symbol pays, as a multiple of your total bet:
- Man (Dracula-like character) – 3 pays 0.3x, 4 pays 0.6x, 5 pays 1.5x
- Bird/Crow – 3 pays 0.2x, 4 pays 0.5x, 5 pays 1x
- Brain – 3 pays 0.15x, 4 pays 0.3x, 5 pays 0.8x
- Syringe/Potion – 3 pays 0.1x, 4 pays 0.2x, 5 pays 0.5x
- Book (skull) – 3 pays 0.1x, 4 pays 0.2x, 5 pays 0.5x
- A – 3 pays 0.05x, 4 pays 0.1x, 5 pays 0.2x
- K – 3 pays 0.05x, 4 pays 0.1x, 5 pays 0.2x
- Q – 3 pays 0.05x, 4 pays 0.1x, 5 pays 0.2x
- J – 3 pays 0.05x, 4 pays 0.1x, 5 pays 0.2x
Below the royals the pays get thin. Five Js pays a fifth of your stake back, which tells you where the real money is meant to come from: the bonus round, not the reel wins.
The wild is a Frankenstein symbol that appears only on reels two to five in the main game and substitutes for all regular symbols except the Bonus symbols. It’s a standard helper wild, nothing more.
Bonus Game & Boosters in The Castle of Slotenstein
Green, Purple and Blue Bonus symbols can land on any reel in the main game, and these are the keys to everything. They carry no values themselves. Each colour is tied to one of the three pumpkins: Green to Shock, Purple to Trick, Blue to Treat.
Landing one, two or three of them may trigger the Bonus Game with the corresponding boosters active. Landing four or more guarantees it. The active boosters are decided by the colours present in the triggering spin, so a mixed scatter of green and purple symbols opens the round with both Shock and Trick running.
The Bonus Game and Orange Bonus Symbols
The round itself is a collecting game. Orange Bonus symbols appear only in the Bonus Game and carry random values of 0.5x, 1x, 1.5x, 2x, 2.5x, 3x, 4x or 5x your total bet, displayed in your chosen currency. Only the bonus round pays these out, and they’re what the whole feature is stacked around.
Shock Booster
Shock is the simple one: if a Green Bonus symbol is present in the triggering spin, the number of bonus spins increases from three to four. It doesn’t change what happens during the round, it just gives you more of it. As boosters go, it’s the blunt instrument of the three.
Trick Booster
Trick is where it gets interesting. With a Purple Bonus symbol in the triggering spin, Purple Bonus symbols carrying values from 0.5x to 5x bet can land during the round, and each one can do two things: add its value to every Orange Bonus symbol on the same reel, and fill all empty positions on that reel with Orange Bonus symbols of the same value.
The Purple symbol then transforms into an Orange one itself. Only one Purple Bonus symbol can land on any single reel, so the spread is capped, but a well-placed one can turn a whole reel into matching orange values in a single hit.
Bonus Buy
There’s a Bonus Buy button in the bottom-left corner of the base-game screen for players who’d rather skip the wait. The buy menu shows the available options and prices in your chosen currency, so check the tiers in-game before committing, as they scale with your stake.
As for the ceiling on all this: there’s no maximum win figure for this one. What the round can build depends on how many Orange values stack up and what the Trick booster does to them, and the game leaves it at that.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.1/10
The Castle of Slotenstein hides its best ideas under a costume. The base game is serviceable – wilds on the middle reels, low-value reel wins, a paytable that rarely excites – and it exists mostly to feed scatter symbols into the machine. That’s fine, but it’s the bonus that earns the price of entry.
The booster system is the smartest thing here. Because the colours of your triggering symbols decide which modifiers run, no two entries into the round feel quite the same, and the Trick booster can convert an entire reel of orange values in one landing. That’s a genuinely layered feature for a seasonal release, and the collecting round gives it somewhere to pay off.
The weakness is everything outside that round. The paytable tops out at 1.5x your stake for five of the best symbol, so base-game wins are small change by design, and there’s no published RTP either. This one suits players who like a collect-and-build bonus with a bit of strategy in how it triggers, and Halloween fans will get a handsome version of it. If you want big base-game hits, this castle keeps its treasures locked in the laboratory.
