Base Game & Features
Tropicool 5 is a highly volatile 6-reel video slot with up to 15,625 ways to win. Winning combinations are created when 3-6 identical symbols land on adjoining reels, starting from the first (reel 1).
The Strawberry has the highest pay value, followed by the Pineapple, Lime, Watermelon, Grape, and 4 smaller Fruit icons. After a win is confirmed on the reels, each combination awards a fixed payout between 0.1x and 2x your bet. Other symbols include Wilds, which substitute for all symbols when part of a win.
The Avalanche Feature kicks in when a winning combination appears in a spin, causing all winning symbols to leave the reel area. Once this happens, each empty cell position is filled with new symbols from above, as well as symbols available from the Cool Reel.
Big symbols that are part of the Cool Reel, that cannot entirely drop onto the reels below, will split into individual 1×1 symbols so that part of them can activate.
Cool Reel
The Cool Reel above the main reel set consists of 2 rows filled with Feature symbols, Ice Cubes, & Empty Cells. Each available Feature symbol only activates when it drops onto the main reel area, while Ice Cubes are classified as ‘Spacers’.
When any of the above symbols fall from the Cool Reel, they are replenished from the right, causing all remaining symbols to shift to the left. Each new winning combination is paid, and the Avalanche sequence continues until no more wins are possible. Mystery symbols always trigger first, followed by Row Swap & Elmo features.
- Mystery Symbols: Reveal the same high or low-paying symbol from the paytable.
- Locked Wilds: Acts as a regular Wild, which is charged to last for the number of wins displayed upon it, after which, it is removed from the reels.
- Golden Symbols: Appear as a random paytable symbol with a Win Multiplier of x2. When a Golden symbol is on the top row, its value increases by +x1 for each row below it, up to a maximum of x6.
- Row Swap: Replaces all symbols on a row with matching high or low-paying symbols. After this, 1 paytable symbol is selected to replace all other symbols on the same row. If the Flamingo, Toucan, Wild Egg, or Wild is chosen, it will replace all other symbols with Wilds.
- Pearls: Trigger the Elmo feature.
Character Features
During gameplay, Elmo Drop, Wild Egg, Mystery Crocodile, & Wild Bird features can activate, awarding the following outcomes:
- Mystery Crocodile: Appears on the Cool Reel as a 6×2 symbol. Once in view, each empty cell position below it will fill with Mystery symbols. The Crocodile will move to the left when no further empty cells remain.
- Wild Egg: Acts as a Sticky Wild on the reels. If there is at least 1 empty cell within its column, it will transform into a Toucan or Flamingo, which acts as a Wild.
- Elmo Drop: Triggers when Elmo collects a Pearl symbol from the reels. Once active, Elmo removes all paytable symbols from the topmost rows, as well as any remaining Pearls. All symbols in the Cool Reel will drop onto the reel area, and each time Elmo collects, there is an equal chance of him triggering.
- Wild Bird: Activated by the Wild Egg feature, causing each Bird symbol to appear in sizes 1×2, 1×3, 1×4, or 1×5.
Tropicool 5: Free Spins
Landing 3, 4, 5, or 6 Bonus Scatters in the base game triggers the Free Spins mode, awarding 6, 9, 12, & 15 Free Spins, respectively.
During this mode, the Cool Reel contains Extra Drop & Multiplier symbols. When the Extra Drops symbol falls upon the main reel area, it will award the displayed number of extra Free Spins. Alternatively, the Multiplier symbol adds its displayed value to the Win Multiplier.

At the same time, Tropicool 5 doesn’t solely rely on nostalgia. The introduction of Golden symbols and the new role of Kyle the Crocodile adds a refreshing layer to gameplay, rather than simply how it looks. Interestingly, ELK Studios has chosen to remove an entire row from the matrix – a change that may have been made to cater for the new gameplay elements.
While this is a minor alteration to the game, it will certainly have a direct impact on how wins are formed. A few symbol positions inevitably alter the frequency & scale of winning combinations, meaning that the hit rate and payout distribution will fall as a result.
The Free Spins mode, or more importantly, the Super Free Spins mode, is another area where Tropicool 5 takes a more segmented approach.
