Tuna Overload Christmas Haul Slot Review
A trawler rides a calm tropical sea at dusk, fairy lights strung along the rail, while a Santa in sunglasses swings a rope net crammed with silvery tuna over the side on a steel crane. An elf with reindeer ears peeks over the signboard. It’s a festive slot that spends its budget on the fishing rather than the snow.
It needs to, because the money in this game is carried almost entirely by one upgrade rule in its bonus round. Spinberry have built their festive fishing trip on a 5×3 grid with 10 paylines, running at 93.24% RTP. That’s on the low side, and the paid routes don’t fix it: buys sit between 93.13% and 93.29%. The tuna do the heavy lifting.
How the Base Game Pays
All wins pay left to right from the leftmost reel, on active win lines only, and just the highest combination counts on each line. There are 10 independent lines across the five reels, and wins on different lines are added together.
The Wild is Santa, and he substitutes for every symbol except the Free Spins symbol, paying 100x the total bet for five of a kind himself. That makes him a joint top payer with the badge. The paytable is a fish ladder, and it’s worth reading top to bottom because the gap between tiers is steep. All values are multiples of the total bet.
- Tuna Overload badge: 5x for three, 20x for four, 100x for five
- Fish with Santa hat: 3x, 10x, 25x
- Fish with blue scarf: 2x, 6x, 15x
- Fish (plain blue): 1x, 4x, 10x
- Christmas ship, screen and device, fisherman with rod, Santa hand with rod, fisherman group: 0.5x, 2x, 10x
- Mixed fish (three variants): 0.5x, 1x, 5x
The step from the top symbol to the second is four times at five of a kind, and the bottom tiers pay fractions of your stake for three. Five badge symbols at 100x is the richest line the base game can produce. Everything below the scarf-wearing fish is small change.
Free Spins and Upgrading Tuna Symbols
The Free Spins symbol is the scatter, and it pays no direct award of its own. It triggers the feature from anywhere in view, with a sliding scale:
- 3 Free Spins symbols: 12 free spins
- 4 Free Spins symbols: 18 free spins
- 5 Free Spins symbols: 24 free spins
Inside the round, the tuna go to work. Any Tuna symbol that forms part of a win is upgraded to match the highest Tuna symbol on that winning line, so a line built on the plain blue fish can pay out at the badge’s rate if a badge sits elsewhere on it. It’s a straightforward upgrade rule, and it’s the whole character of the bonus.
Retriggers keep the door open. Landing three, four or five Free Spins symbols again awards another 12, 18 or 24 spins, and the round can retrigger up to three times. That puts the ceiling at 96 free spins in total.
Free Spins triggered from the base game play at the stake of the round that set them off, and feature wins are added to line wins. The round starts proper once you press Start on the feature pop-up, or automatically after a short wait.
Feature Spin™ and Buy Feature
There are two paid routes into the bonus, and they work differently. The Buy Feature is the direct one: press the button, choose how many free spins you want, and pay the amount shown to start the round immediately.
The Feature Spin™ is Spinberry’s halfway house. You select the number of free spins you’re chasing, then play a pre-game where the reels carry active and inactive Free Spins symbols only. Match three active Free Spins symbols and the free spins round begins, played at the base game stake that corresponds to your Feature Spin™ stake.
Each configuration runs at its own RTP, and the differences are small. Feature Spin™ pays 93.26% on the 12-spin setting, 93.24% on 18, and 93.28% on 24. The Buy Feature runs 93.29%, 93.16% and 93.13% across the same three settings. None of them meaningfully beats the base figure.
Gamble and Bet Chance
After any win, the Gamble button offers a card guess on a fresh 52-card deck. Pick the colour and a correct call doubles your money; pick the suit and a correct call quadruples it. A wrong call loses the staked amount.
You can collect at any point, and the gamble repeats up to five times, switching off once winnings pass a set ceiling. It returns an average payout of 100%, which makes it fair value as gambles go. Each outcome is independent of the last, and if you leave the gamble sitting without a choice, it times out and collects your winnings for you. It isn’t offered on the largest wins.
The Bet Chance works the other end of the balance. When your funds drop below the last spin stake, a dial activates: land on the green segment and you’re awarded a spin at your previous stake level; land on red and the remaining balance is taken. The green segment’s size is the odds, and you can cancel out of the dial at no cost.
Both the Gamble and Bet Chance can be switched off in the settings.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6.3/10
This is a scatter hunt with a gorgeous view. You spin a cheerful ten-liner, wait for three Santa scatters, and the whole appeal is that one moment when the tuna start climbing each other’s backs inside the bonus. If you’re going to enjoy anything here, it’s that upgrade chain running while the retrigger count ticks upward.
The upgrade rule is the strength: it turns the cheapest fish on the board into badge money, which a flat paytable like this one badly needs. The weakness is that the numbers never reward you for staying. At 93.24%, and with every paid route within a whisker of it, patience costs more here than in nearly any comparable festive slot.
It suits players who want a short, pretty Christmas session and like a bonus with a bit of chase in it, through the Feature Spin™ if not the buy menu. Anyone hunting a big ceiling or a generous return won’t find it on this trawler; the lights on the rail are the real catch.
