Valley of the Dead OnlyWins BoltLock Slot Review
Chains hang through the green murk behind a facade of carved black stone, two hooded reapers flanking the reels with skull-set bowls in their arms. Yggdrasil‘s Valley of the Dead OnlyWins BoltLock belongs to a rare breed of slot where winning makes the next win easier: every winning symbol physically tears a blocker off the board, so the game you start and the game you end up playing are two different sizes.
It runs on a 5×4 grid with up to 3,125 ways to win, medium-high volatility and a 94% RTP, and the ceiling sits at 5,800x the bet. Stakes run from 0.10 to 100 per spin. The theme treads ground Yggdrasil knows well, within spitting distance of Valley of the Gods 2 and Hades Gigablox, and it suits the studio’s taste for dark, painterly fantasy.
Base Game & Features
Twelve scarab-engraved blockers cover reel positions when a spin starts, leaving 45 ways in play. Wins form on three or more adjacent reels from the left, and landing more than one instance of a symbol on a reel multiplies the win, so a full board pays generously on the same line of symbols. The blockers are the whole engine here.
There’s no wild symbol. The blocker tiles do the job a wild would usually do, in their own way: they’re the obstacle the rest of the game exists to clear.
BoltLock Respins
Every winning spin awards a Respin, and each winning symbol releases a golden scarab that destroys one blocker. The board opens as the chain continues. Respins run at the same stake as the spin that started them, and they keep going for as long as winning combinations land.
Clear all twelve blockers and the second half of the game wakes up: an upgradable multiplier and extra lives. It’s a progress bar you build with wins, and the progress is temporary. Once the respin chain ends, the blockers return to their twelve positions and the board resets.
The paytable splits into four god characters at the top and six hieroglyphic coins below them, ten regular symbols in all. All values below are multiples of the total bet:
- Red-crowned Warrior (dark): 2x for three, 6x for four, 20x for five
- Purple Sorceress: 2x for three, 6x for four, 20x for five
- Green Beast/Serpent: 1x for three, 3x for four, 10x for five
- Blue Beast: 1x for three, 3x for four, 10x for five
- Gold Coin: 0.32x for three, 0.8x for four, 1.6x for five
- Teal/Green Coin: 0.32x for three, 0.8x for four, 1.6x for five
- Orange/Brown Coin: 0.28x for three, 0.6x for four, 1.2x for five
- Blue/Grey Coin: 0.28x for three, 0.6x for four, 1.2x for five
- Dark Red Coin: 0.24x for three, 0.48x for four, 1x for five
Valley of the Dead OnlyWins BoltLock Bonus Features
The bonus systems all hang off the same respin chain, and each one switches on at a defined moment. The order matters, because nothing past the first step is available until the board is clear:
- Respins & More Ways: every win triggers a Respin, and each winning symbol removes one BoltLock blocker
- Multiplier: unlocking all Ways to Win activates the upgradable x2 multiplier
- Extra Lives: unlocking all Ways to Win also activates the lives counter
- Blue Souls: after the board is clear, some winning symbols release Blue Souls, and five of them upgrade the multiplier by +1
- Red Souls: after the board is clear, some winning symbols release Red Souls, and five of them grant +1 Extra Life
The Multiplier and Blue Souls
Destroying every blocker activates an x2 multiplier that applies to all wins. From that point, winning blue, teal or green symbols release Blue Souls, and every five collected upgrades the multiplier by one. There’s no cap on it.
Upgrades earned during a respin apply to the respin after it, not the win that earned them, so a long chain compounds late. The multiplier resets when the chain ends, along with the board.
Extra Lives and Red Souls
Clearing the board also grants one extra life to start with. Winning red, orange, purple or pink symbols release Red Souls once all ways are unlocked, and every five collected adds another life. Lives can keep stacking for as long as the scarabs keep coming.
A life is spent when a respin lands no win, granting another respin anyway. The chain only ends on a losing respin with no lives left, which is how a single spin can run for a very long time.
OnlyWins Mode
OnlyWins is a toggle, and it changes the economics of the game rather than its mechanics. Switched on, it raises the cost of every spin and gives each one a 99.99% chance of winning. The maths shifts, the reels don’t.
It’s aimed squarely at the frustration of dead spins. The guarantee is bought per spin, not per session, so it can be switched on for a short run when the blockers refuse to shift and switched straight back off again.
Multi OnlyWins
For an increased price, a set of ten OnlyWins spins can be bought outright and played one by one. Each of those spins is guaranteed to win, which removes the variance entirely and leaves the paytable to carry the round. It’s the closest thing this game has to a bonus buy, and it’s priced accordingly.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 7.1/10
Most of your time here is spent in a cramped valley with twelve blockers in the way, and that’s deliberate: the one reason to choose this game is that watching the board open up, blocker by blocker, feels like progress you earned rather than a feature you triggered. When the last scarab goes, the place comes alive.
The best thing about it is that everything feeds one loop, and a long chain can pay well beyond what the modest paytable promises. The worst thing is that none of it carries over. Every chain ends with the board sealed shut again, and the real game is locked behind clearing twelve blockers you’ve already cleared a hundred times.
It’s a good fit for players who enjoy the long build and don’t need a bonus round to show for it, and a poor one for anyone chasing a headline feature they can trigger on demand. The reapers keep what you build, every single time. But the dead give it back generously while the chain holds.
