San Quentin 2: Death Row Slot Review
Nolimit City has us jailed once more in perhaps their most anticipated release of the year, San Quentin 2: Death Row. A long stretch in a maximum security prison for men condemned to death sounds bad enough, but to be cellies with none other than Beefy Dick sounds like a death sentence in itself.
Assault and torture are high on Beefy’s list of favourite things to do, and cowering in a corner, begging for mercy and sitting on a ring-shaped cushion is your new reality. The once-taken-for-granted beauty of freedom is nothing but a distant memory, and the harsh truth of the rest of your life confined within walls of misery is starting to set in. Kenneth found out the hard way in Kenneth Must Die (literally) and now it’s our turn to face his hedonistic wrath.
San Quentin took the iGaming world by storm when it was released in 2021. With an unheard of maximum win of 150,000x and incomprehensibly complex features, it became and still remains, a fan favourite. Folsom Prison was another stretch behind bars that turned heads, yet San Quentin made the biggest impression.
San Quentin 2: Death Row looks better than ever, with graphics that are vastly better than its predecessor. As expected, the soundtrack is incredible, and second to none when it comes to in-game sounds. Nolimit City has rated their volatility for San Quentin 2 as 12, which gives it an insane rating. It’s no wonder given its substantial 200,000x max win. Such a significant figure is almost non-existent in non-jackpot games, with only their original release and Tombstone RIP reaching these heights.
Incarceration in San Quentin 2: Death Row promises to be more brutal than ever before – Will you walk the Green Mile, or will Beefy get you first?
Base Game and Features
San Quentin 2: Death Row is a 5-reel slot with 1024 ways to win by default, but Nolimit City xMechanics like xSplit and xWays will exponentially increase the possible ways. The bet sizes here are what you’d expect from Nolimit City with options that range from £/€0.20 to £/€100 the bet.
Forming a win requires at least 3 of any symbols to connect on adjacent reels, starting from the leftmost reel.
Low Paying Symbols include the Soap, comb, dice, gloves and toilet roll, which awards 1x to 0.05x the bet. High Paying Symbols are Beefy Dick, Heinrich, Luis, Bill and Joe, which awards from 2x to 0.3x the bet.
There’s also a Wild Symbol, which substitutes for all except for the bonus symbol.
Enhancer Cells
At the top and bottom of each reel, there are locked Enhancer Cells. When these cells open, they can reveal one of the following:
- High Paying Symbols
- A regular Wild
- Razor Split
- xWays Symbol
Razor Split symbols will split all of the regular positions on that reel, doubling their ways. If a Razor Split should land on the top and bottom enhancer cell on the same reel, then it will split them twice. If the Razor Split splits the Bonus Symbol, then the Bonus Symbol transforms into Wilds and splits its row.
Split Wild
Split Wild symbols may land on any reel. These symbols split all regular symbols on the same reel, doubling their size and increasing the ways. The xSplit Wild will not split itself
xWays Symbols
xWays symbols will reveal the same regular paying symbol, stacking them 5 high. When xWays appears on both active Enhancer Cells on the same reel, then all spaces in between are covered by 10 single wilds.
Green Mile Spins
When you land 3, 4, or 5 Bonus symbols, you’ll activate the Green Mile Spins, starting with 1, 2, or 3 Jumping Wilds respectively. Before the feature begins, you can either choose to draw another Jumping Wild or stick with the current amount. You can have a maximum of 5 Jumping Wilds.
Upon triggering Green Mile Spins, players have the option to either start with their awarded Jumping Wilds or risk 5 spins for the chance to gain an additional one, up to a total of 5. The number of Jumping Wilds determines how many reels will have active Enhancer Cells:
- 1 Jumping Wild: 3 reels with active Enhancer Cells
- 2 Jumping Wilds: 4 reels with active Enhancer Cells
- 3 to 5 Jumping Wilds: 5 reels with active Enhancer Cells
If you get a 4th or 5th Jumping Wild, they will come with a x2 multiplier. When you hit 5 Jumping Wilds, you can choose to either gamble 5 spins for a chance at the Max Win or play with the current setup.
Once the Green Mile Spins are active, reels with Enhancer Cells are randomly selected and remain in place throughout the feature. If you land Bonus symbols on reels with closed Enhancer Cells, they will open, and the Bonus symbols will transform into Jumping Wilds. Landing between 2 and 5 Bonus symbols awards you 3 to 6 extra spins.
Jumping Wilds
Jumping Wilds jump to a random regular reel position on each spin.
When a Jumping Wild lands on a reel with the Razor Split enhancer, it will rouble its multiplier which will persist for the remainder of the round, unless further improved by another Razor Split. Jumping Wilds also doubles all positions on the same row.
Nolimit Booster
The Nolimit Booser allows players to activate the xBet feature
- xBet: Costs 2x the bet. This Guarantees at least 1 Bonus Symbol on each subsequent spin (96.00% RTP)
- Double xBet: Costs 45x the bet. This guarantees at least 2 Bonus Symbols on each subsequent spin. The maximum possible bet for this option is £/€100 (96.22% RTP)
Nolimit Bonus Buy
Those within jurisdictions that allow bonus buys may make use of various buy options
- Green Mile Spins with 1 Jumping Wild – 100x the bet (96.27% RTP)
- Green Mile Spins with 2 Jumping Wilds – 500x the bet (96.18% RTP)
- Green Mile Spins with 3 Jumping Wilds – 2,500x the bet (96.18% RTP)
- Lucky Draw – 580x the bet (96.23% RTP)
- 40% 1 Jumping Wild
- 40% 2 Jumping Wilds
- 20% 3 Jumping Wilds
No Escape
The maximum payout of San Quentin 2 is 200,000x the base bet.
When the total win exceeds this amount, Green Mile Spins will end and the maximum win will be awarded.
Our Verdict
San Quentin 2: Death Row is a slot to remember. If Death Row is this fun, then show us what heinous crime we have to commit to be subjected to it.
Just about everything is an improvement on before, and by quite a meaningful margin. The graphics and sounds take the San Quentin experience to another level, creating a tense ambience befitting of the perilous place that is San Quentin, and the fine-tuned tweaks in features and gameplay build nicely upon the solid foundations to bring the series and Nolimit City’s repute to newfound heights.
San Quentin 2 isn’t a massive overhaul, but it didn’t need to be. This instalment keeps everything that you loved before, and it throws in even more. The added thrills and the excitement they bring is treatment undeserving of a scumbag of San Quentin, but deserving of players who follow Nolimit City’s impressive feats of accomplishment. Few can evoke such emotion in the world of slots, whether that be excitement, despair, disgust, horror or hilarity.
The Base Game is a pleasure to play here, with Enhancer Cells present once more to keep things nice and eventful. We think the San Quentin games in particular do a great job of making the player feel like something potentially epic is just around the corner. It’s a feeling we’re pleased to say has translated into the anticipated sequel.
Of course, the main event is the Green Mile Spins. Previously, you’d have to rely on extra scatters during the bonus to take you up a level, but the addition of a gamble feature here ups the ante. Your chances aren’t amazing, with the first upgrade from a standard bonus at only a 16.67% chance. Fortune favours the bold as they say, but even the boldest of us can be humbled fairly quickly if not careful. The Max Level bonus and the option to gamble twice for even more Jumping Wilds is a mouth-watering prospect, and the thought of losing 5 spins if you lose is a fate worse than the chair.
We can say confidently that San Quentin 2: Death Row can kick off with any bonus. We’ve had a short time to test it, and our first impression of it is one of awe. It’s a prison sentence like no other from the provider the brings you games like no other. With a 200,000x max win and the warm yet suffocating embrace of your cellmate Beefy, it isn’t a game you want to miss.
