Permanent Wild

During the base game, a special Permanent Wild symbol will move to a new position in the middle 3 reels with each new spin. The permanent Wild acts like a regular Wild, substituting for all other symbols except Scatters.

Captain’s Due

Also during the base game, whenever 1 or more Scatters land in view, the Captain’s Due feature may randomly trigger.

Once this happens, 1 of the Scatters in view is randomly chosen and the Permanent Wild will move Horizontally at first then Vertically toward the chosen Scatter’s position.

As it moves, the Permanent Wild will leave behind Wake Wild symbols that substitute for all other symbols in the paytable except Scatters.

Captain Glum: Pirate Hunter Free Spins

Landing 3 or more Skull Scatters across the reels in any position other than the Permanent Wild triggers the Free Spins round, awarding 10 Free Spins.

At the start of Free Spins, the additional top and bottom rows are covered by hull segments of a Pirate Hunter flagship and a Pirate flagship. The Pirate Hunter flagship has a total of 5 open gun ports below each reel, and the Pirate flagship has the same above each reel.

When the cannons of either flagship are reloaded, they may randomly take 1, 2, or 3 Free Spins. All loaded cannons are then pushed back into the gun ports from left to right at the start of each Free Spin.

If during any Free Spin, a flagship has all 5 cannons loaded up, the Broadside feature will trigger. Once this happens, all 5 cannons will fire simultaneously in the direction of the other flagship.

Broadside Feature

During the Broadside feature, cannonballs that are fired from the Pirate Hunter flagship will travel upwards, whereas cannonballs fired from the Pirate flagship will travel downwards.

If the fired cannonballs of the Pirate Hunter flagship encounter a High-paying Pirate Ship symbol on a reel, the cannonball will sink the ship, transforming it into a Wake Wild symbol. The same will occur for the opposing High-paying Pirate Hunter ship symbol by the cannonballs fired from the other Pirate flagship.

The sinking of High-paying Ship symbols contributes toward a Pirate Hunter vs Pirate competition. Pirate Ships that are sunk by either party will increase their current scores on the right side of the reel set.

If a cannonball that is fired does not interact with a High-paying Ship symbol of the opposing team, it will smash into the corresponding hull segment of the other team’s flagship, destroying the segment and opening up the reel in that direction by +1 position. If the segment has already been destroyed, there will be no changes made to the reels.

At the end of Free Spins, if the Pirate Hunter team has a higher score than the Pirate team, the Treasure Hunt feature will be awarded. Here you will be met with 3 Treasure Chests, each hiding either a x2, x3, or x10 Multiplier inside them. Choose 1 Treasure Chest to reveal one of these Multiplier values that will then be applied to your total win.

Captain Glum: Pirate Hunter – Our Verdict

Usually, in a slot where there’s a villain or two, you automatically expect to be on the good guy or gal’s team, but it seems that pairing up with Captain Glum is actually more beneficial if you want to pocket a few extra quid and get in on the Treasure Hunt feature in Free Spins.

Captain Glum: Pirate Hunter, despite its name is a charming slot with a number of interesting features available. The main attraction in the base game is definitely the Permanent Wild symbol and what it can do.

Although limited to the 3 middle reels, it forms winning combinations when there wouldn’t necessarily be any and does well to top up your balance regularly. This is then heightened by the Captain’s Due feature that can trigger when 1 or more Scatters land in view, similar to the Toro goes Wild feature seen in ELK Studios Book of Toro.

To further complement the game is the Free Spins round, where another 2 features come into play. In addition to Free Spins, winning the competition at the end of the round gets you access to the Treasure Hunt feature which guarantees a Multiplier of up to x10 that is applied to your total win.

A max win cap of 9,000x isn’t the most impressive figure we’ve seen, but it’s certainly an amount we wouldn’t turn our nose up at. All in all, Captain Glum: Pirate Hunter isn’t the most glamorous Play’n GO title but it’s not exactly the worst either.
