Pirates have been given the boot by their feathered companions who now rule the seas as Pirots, but will they have more luck in finding the buried treasure?

Get ready for some swashbucklin’ fun in ELK Studios’ cheeky new slot, Pirots, where Upgrade and Transform features, Coins and a max win of 10,000x awaits!

Pirots Base Game and Features

Pirots is a 5-8 reel Video Slot with a Cluster Pays mechanic. Winning combinations are formed when a cluster of the same coloured Gem symbols land adjacent to the matching coloured bird symbol, regardless of their position on the grid.

The minimum bet available here is £/€0.20 per spin and the maximum bet available is £/€100 per spin, with plenty of other options in between the two. Pirots has a theoretical RTP of 94.00% and a max win cap of 10,000x.

There is a total of 4 coloured Gems in play and 4 matching coloured Bird symbols. Alongside matching Gem symbols, Bird symbols will move up, down, left and right and collect any Feature symbols that are part of the winning cluster.

When no more winning clusters are formed, but a winning cluster can be created, 2 Bird symbols next to each other can swap their positions.

All the Gem symbols start off at Level 1 and can be upgraded in value. The Red Gem has the highest pay value, followed by Purple, Green and Blue Gems.

Each time a cluster of winning symbols is collected, new symbols will drop down from above, filling all empty positions across the grid. Bonus Scatters will be collected and stored in the Meter above the grid.

Feature Symbols

All winning clusters will be stored in a separate Meter above the grid. When the meter is filled to the top, a Feature Award is triggered.

Once active, 3 random Gems will transform into feature symbols when no additional symbols can be collected.

Upgrade Symbols (Arrows)

The White Upgrade symbol will upgrade Gems of the same colour as the Bird that collected it.

Multicoloured Upgrade symbols will upgrade all coloured Gem symbols at the same time. Gem levels will increase by 1-3 levels, up to a maximum of 5.

Transform Symbol (Rum Barrel)

Collected Rum Barrels will transform a cluster of Gems around it to the same colour as the Bird symbol that collected it. It may also transform into a number of random Feature symbols.

Coin Symbols

Coin symbols appear with a random Prize Value attached to them. Each Coin symbol collected by a Bird symbol will award it’s value per your current bet.

Bomb Symbols

Each Bomb symbol collected by a Bird will explode when there are no more winning clusters in view.

Once active, it will remove all symbols around it, (except Feature symbols) resulting in a Redrop to fill all empty positions on the grid. Also, bird symbols will drop onto the grid in new positions.

In addition to this, the Explosion will also cause the grid to expand, up to a maximum of 8 rows and 8 columns.

Wilds

Wild symbols substitute for all Gem symbols from the paytable, regardless of their current Level.

Pirots Free Spins

The Free Spins round is triggered when 3 Bonus Scatters are collected by any of the Bird symbols. Once triggered, you will be awarded 5 Free Drops.

The Free Spins round will begin on the same grid size, symbol collection and win level of Gem symbols from the base game. Collecting 3 Bonus Scatters during this time will award additional Free Drops.

Pirots Bonus X-iter

Those outside the UK will benefit from ELK Studios’ famous X-iter feature. Here you will be able to choose from 5 different Bonus Buy options.

• Bonus Hunt – Awards one drop with more than quadruple the chance of triggering the Bonus round for a total cost of 3x your current bet.
• Feature Bonanza – Awards one drop with a guaranteed full symbol collection and feature symbols for a total cost of 10x your current bet.
• Maximum Grid Size – Awards one drop that is played with the maximum 8×8 grid size for a total cost of 25x your current bet.
• Bonus – Awards the Free Spins round for a total cost of 100x your current bet.
• Super Bonus – Awards the Super Free Spins round, where the round is played with the maximum grid size and all upgrade symbols upgrade all coloured Gems, for a total cost of 500x your current bet.

Pirotes: Our Verdict

In a relatively short span of time, ELK Studios has ascended from being a great provider to one of the very best.

Think of Pirots as like Pac-Man, in a way. Pac-man needs no introduction as one of the most infamous video games in the world, and ELK Studios seemingly took inspiration from the classic arcade hit when they thought up Pirots. The way in which characters eat up their relative colour symbols makes for an interesting experience, and the upgradeable nature of the symbols can soon turn Pirots into a rather fruitful experience. Upgrade, Transform, Bomb, Coin and Wild features make Pirotes a rather abundant slot in terms of features, which is something players are sure to appreciate.

Through testing the Free Spins round ourselves we found it to be a varied experience with fairly frequent hits, and then a few rounds where the slot takes you to the cleaners. Of course, this is the nature of all slots, but we were quite impressed with what Pirotes could pull off when it was firing on all cylinders.

As usual, the X-iter Feature stands as a stand-out feature of Pirots, just as it is in other ELK slots. Unfortunately for UK players, this is locked away, but we’re hoping that the Bonus Hunt X-iter might make a UK debut at some point. Ante bets certainly aren’t outlawed, and we see them all the time in slots from Pragmatic Play, Stakelogic and Nolimit City. We think the ELK Studios appeal would be bigger than it already is if the Bonus Hunt made an appearance!

In recent games, ELK Studios has seemingly made the switch from the 95% standard (which was low itself, once upon a time) to a 94% average. This may make no difference to many, and if we’re honest we’d much rather play ELK’s new games than some of their older ones, even if the RTP is 1% lower.

Elsewhere, the stats look great with a 10,000x maximum win figure. It’s not quite as potent as the likes of Avalon Gold, but it’s respectable enough for us.

Overall, Pirots is a fun ELK Studios classic with a touch of innovation and a dash of silliness. It probably won’t stand out as a flagship release, but it could prove to be memorable, given the chance.
