Book of Fallen Slot Review 2021

Book of Fallen from Pragmatic Play has us accompanying the chissled and curious adventure John Hunter once more.

Book Style slots are as plentiful as pretty much every other slot genre in the industry. We wouldn’t even be surprised if it outnumbers Megaways Slots 4 to 1 at this point. The mere title may be enough to make some switch off, but there’s undeniably a very strong appetite for these types of slots.

Will Book of Fallen make you fall further in love with Book slots, or have you fallen out of love with this style of game? Despite its generic looks, you may well want to read on to see how Pragmatic Play has kept a timeworn mechanic somewhat fresh.

Book of Fallen Base Game

Book of Fallen Theme

What can we say about the theme of Book of Fallen? Not a lot really. Pragmatic Play has opted for the classic Egyptian theme, and at this point it’s something we’ve seen a hundred, or perhaps even a thousand times before. We’ve come to expect professional art style from someone as big as Pragmatic Play, and Book of Fallen certainly is well illustrated.

However, at this point we don’t think any brownie points can by given for the inspiration behind this one at all. The Egyptian Book style game almost feels as old as ancient Egypt itself at this point.

Book of Fallen Betting and Symbols

Book of Fallen has a variety of betting options for players to choose from. For those who prefer a lower stake, the minimum bet available is £0.10 per spin. For those who prefer a higher stake, the maximum bet available is £100 per spin, with plenty of options in between the two.

The highest paying regular symbol in Book of Fallen is John Hunter, followed by the Pharaoh, Anubis and the Ankh. Lower paying symbols are standard Ace, King, Queen, Jack and Ten.

The Book symbol is both Scatters and Wilds and substitutes for all symbols.

Book of Fallen Base Game and Features

Book of Fallen is a 5 reel slot with 10 fixed paylines. To form a win you will need to connect 3 or more (or 2 or more of the higher paying symbols) from left to right, starting from the left-most reel.

Everybody knows the win capabilities of Book Style slots. A mere line of the higher paying symbols does more than boost the balance, and we think this kind of pay potential is partly why Book Style slots still enjoy immense popularity.

Most take it no further in the Base Game than this, but these days a Book Slot needs to stand out of it’s to compete with the swathe of slots just like it…which is where the Super Spin Ante Bet comes in.

Super Spin Ante Bet

Situated on the left side of the screen, you will come across the Super Spins Ante Bet. Opting into this feature will cost 10x your total bet per spin.

When the Super Spin Ante Bet is active, each spin will be played like a Free Spins bonus spin.

First of all, you will need to choose your expanding symbol. Higher paying symbols only require 2 or more to expand, whereas lower paying symbols need 3 or more for expansion.

If you no longer wish to have the Super Spin Ante Bet active, de-activating this will return the base game to its original gameplay.

This feature definitely puts a spin on the classic ‘Book’ style games.  Although it comes at a price, this feature is jam-packed with potential, so more often than not you will probably make your money back plus a little profit!

Book of Fallen Super Spin Feature

Book of Fallen Free Spins

During the base game, landing 3 Scatters on any of the reels will trigger the bonus round, awarding 10 Free Spins.

Before Free Spins can begin, you will need to choose your expanding symbol.

Higher paying symbols require 2 or more symbols for expansion, with lower paying symbols needing 3 or more.

The expanding symbol pays according to its paytable, on all reels (inlcuding non-adjacent reels).

During Free Spins, landing 3 or more Scatter symbols will award an additional +10 Free Spins with the current expanding symbol.

There is no limit to the amount of possible retriggers.

The RTP when purchasing Free Spins drops slightly from 96.50% to 96.48%.

Book of Fallen Our Verdict

When you first load up Book of Fallen, you’d be forgiven for thinking that it’s ‘just another book game’, and in some senses, it is. Book of Fallen brings absolutely nothing in regards to theme with the standard Egyptian Style that we’ve seen before. In our opinion, it’s hard for a slot to make a positive first impression when it showcases the same style, but perhaps we’re wrong?

Perhaps there’s still an overwhelming appetite for a tried and true Egyptian format? After all, Book of Ra, Book of Dead, Legacy of Dead and more has brought player so much, so it’d be understandable if there’s a soft spot in the heart of players for something that reminds them of a trusty original. We think opinions would be split, everyone is different after all. Some will welcome this classical theme with open arms, and some seeking innovation will go elsewhere.

Whatever your opinion, one thing that can’t be denied is Book of Fallen’s potential, and what Pragmatic Play has done to make it stand out from other Book Slots.

Pragmatic Play has included an option for players to choose their symbol in Free Spins, which kind of means you can choose your own volatility. Will you go looking for a full screen of John Hunter? or are you happy with one of the lower symbols for more frequent wins. The choice is yours, as is the choice to utilise the Super Spin Ante Bet within the base game. The Super Spin Ante Bet gives you a chance to turn every Base Game Spin into one that is like the bonus, but caution should be taken because of the increase in stake.

Statistic wise, things look pretty standard here, but pretty good at the same time. 5,000x win capabilities makes Book of Fallen an exciting prospect, and the standard 96.50% RTP puts it well above the accepted average. Just be on the look out for the lower 95.50% and 94.50% variants.

Overall, Book of Fallen is a solid instalment from Pragmatic Play, but it’s not exactly a surprising or game changing one.
