Energy Coins Hold and Win Slot Review
Gold coins spill out from behind the ENERGY COINS lettering and trail along the top of a bevelled gold reel frame, a domed medallion crackles with a blue-white bolt above them, and the navy backdrop is dark enough that all of it glows. It’s a lot of shine for a machine with five paylines, and that’s the interesting thing about Energy Coins Hold and Win: it’s a game that spends almost everything it has in one place. Playson have built a lean five-liner where the reels are mostly a waiting room for a coin-collecting round with four jackpots attached.
It runs on a 5×3 grid with five fixed paylines, sitting in the same cabinet family as 3 Pots Riches Extra: Hold & Win and Thunder Coins XXL: Booster Cells. Five lines is about as small as the format gets.
Base Game & Features
Reels and Paylines
The setup is compact: five reels, three rows, five paylines. Lines are fixed, they pay in succession from the leftmost reel to the rightmost, and only the highest win on each line counts. That’s the whole rulebook for the reels.
With five lines and no more, the wins that arrive between bonuses are correspondingly modest. A total win of 4x the stake came up, and a grape-and-orange line returned 5x.
The reel window itself is a thin bevelled gold bracket with small flourishes at the corners – a small frame for a small game. Slim gold rails run down each side, carrying vertical text.
Coin Symbols
Beside the fruit symbols – grapes, oranges and the rest of the classic cabinet lineup – coin symbols land with cash values attached. As multiples of the stake, the values in play were:
- 2x
- 5x
- 7x
- 10x
What the coins are really doing is signalling. They’re the same symbols the wider game is built around, and they reappear at much bigger values once the bonus opens up. Small wins in the base game come from lines; the coins themselves are just set dressing until the round they belong to arrives.
Wild Symbols
The wild is a flaming red 7, and it stands in to complete win lines. That’s its entire job, and it does it without ceremony. A line of wild 7s paid 2.87x the stake – useful, not dramatic.
One thing worth knowing up front: the game carries a progressive jackpot. That’s not unusual for this kind of title, and it’s the sort of prize that can land without much warning.
Energy Coins Hold and Win Bonus Game
Triggering the Bonus Game
Six or more Bonus symbols, or a combination of Bonus and Energy Bonus symbols, triggers the Bonus Game. That’s a high bar on a five-line grid, and it’s the gate every serious win in this game sits behind.
The Energy Bonus symbol matters here as a helper: it counts towards the six-symbol threshold alongside the ordinary Bonus symbol, which softens the ask slightly on a grid this size. Even so, six coins on fifteen positions is a genuinely demanding trigger.
Everything below that threshold pays in fractions of the stake. The bonus is the game; the reels are how you get there.
Inside the Round
Once inside, the round plays out on a grid of coin multiplier symbols rather than the ordinary reels. The coins that land carry multipliers instead of flat cash values, and the ladder steps steeply:
- x5 coin multiplier
- x7 coin multiplier
- x10 coin multiplier
- x72 coin multiplier
- x144 coin multiplier
- x438 coin multiplier
- MINOR jackpot symbol
- MAJOR jackpot symbol
From x10 to x72 is a big jump, and from x144 to x438 is bigger still. The top coin pays more than forty times the one below it, which tells you where the round’s variance is concentrated: most of the ladder’s money lives in its last three steps.
The shape of that ladder is the point of the round. The bottom three coins are common ground – a x5 or x7 coin isn’t moving the needle on its own. The x72 and above are where a running total turns into something worth the wait.
The MINOR and MAJOR jackpot symbols sit in the same grid, collecting towards their tiers. A round can therefore grow through two channels at once: the coins that stack, and the jackpot symbols that accrue.
Bonus Game Jackpots
Above the coin ladder sit four jackpots: MINI, MINOR, MAJOR and GRAND, in ascending order. They’re triggered by the random appearance of Bonus symbols during the Bonus Game itself, so a round that’s already running can escalate into a jackpot payout without warning.
That random arrival is the round’s real twist. It isn’t a meter you fill or a symbol count you complete – a Bonus symbol can simply appear while the coins are landing and hand you a tier outright, which keeps every spin of the round live rather than settled.
No values are published for any of the four tiers. They’re won in the round, not quoted on a price card, and the GRAND sits at the very top of everything the game can pay.
Our Honest Verdict
Overall Rating: 6.3/10
Most of a session here is spent watching a very pretty gold cabinet pay out buttons. Line wins sit in single-digit territory at a 1.00 stake, and the coin symbols on the reels are small change. The one reason to choose this over any other five-liner is that when six Bonus symbols finally land, the game changes character completely.
The bonus round is properly built. The coin ladder jumps from x10 to x72 to x438, so the round keeps escalating right to the last coin, and a jackpot can drop mid-round without warning – two chances to win in one spin is more drama than most cabinets manage.
But the wait is long and thin. Five paylines means the base game rarely gives you anything to do, and with no jackpot values quoted, you’re playing blind on everything except the mechanics.
It suits players who like one big chase rather than a busy reel set – jackpot hunters and classic-cabinet people will feel at home. Anyone who wants features to play with between rounds won’t find them. For the patient type, all that gold is worth sitting in the dark for.
